From the outside, it can sometimes seem like celebrities live in their own worlds, removed from the duties and cares that the rest of us have to deal with. In that sense, it’s often sobering when you find out that they actually do have to face a lot of the same issues as everybody else – like dealing with their families, for example. And while no clan is perfect, and we all have our horror stories, the feuds that these famous people have had with their nearest and dearest often take dysfunction to another level entirely.
20. Kelly Rowland
Kelly Rowland might not have been a Destiny’s Child for a while now, but she hasn’t been her father’s daughter for a lot longer. Rowland’s father allegedly had issues with alcohol and his temper when she was a child, and both of these things ended up driving her and her mother away. As a consequence, they haven’t had any contact since, although he’s tried to reach her many times.
19. Christian Bale
Christian Bale has a reputation for having a short fuse, but did you know that he was arrested for assault in 2008? While getting ready for the premiere of The Dark Knight, Bale had a huge falling-out with his mother and sister at the Dorchester hotel in London. But while he was subsequently brought in by police and questioned on assault charges, those charges never stuck. That said, while it remains unclear as to what the cause of the fight was, Bale’s relationships with his mom and sibling have remained fractured ever since.
18. Jennifer Aniston
The tabloids have spent years scrutinizing Jennifer Aniston’s love life, but her relationship with her mother was even more complicated. Aniston and her mom, Nancy Dow, remained estranged throughout her adult life, until around two weeks before Dow died in May 2016. After her death, moreover, it was revealed that Dow had cut Aniston out of her will.
17. Lindsay Lohan
It’s no secret that Lindsay Lohan has had a plethora of personal issues. And perhaps some of them relate back to her parents, Michael and Dina, with whom Lindsay has fought very publicly. That said, the former couple have fought each other just as much, if not more, than they have done their daughter. At one point Dina even encouraged Lindsay to bring a lawsuit against her father, as a way of cutting him out of her life.
Being the parent of a celebrity is probably a very strange and sometimes difficult position to be in, but there are always opportunities to take advantage of it. And Adele’s father, Marc Evans, duly did so by selling a story to a tabloid in 2011 about how he left her mother. The singer cut him off as a result. And although they’ve reportedly patched things up now, their relationship was non-existent for a long while.
Mo’Nique received massive acclaim – and an Academy Award – for her harrowing portrayal of Mary Lee Johnston in Precious. In subsequent interviews, however, she’s said that she brought the character to life by recalling the sexual abuse she received at the hands of her brother Gerald Imes. He subsequently apologized for his actions on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2010, but Mo’Nique responded negatively to his words.
It’s fair to say that Eminem has butted heads with a lot of different people. In many cases, moreover, they’ve ended up being referenced in his lyrics in a very direct and unflattering manner. His mother Debbie Mathers got a bit more than that, though; she got an entire song in “Headlights.” And there’s been no love lost between the pair for years now. Perhaps that’s best exemplified by the fact that in 1999 Debbie sued her son for slander – although she only came away with $1,600 of the $10 million she’d originally asked for.
Do celebrities have an obligation to give their families financial support? Madonna seems to think not. After all, her brother, Antony Ciccone, is a homeless alcoholic, but the Material Girl nevertheless maintains no contact with him. Indeed, while other members of the family have offered him support, she has never been involved in their efforts. Antony has even stated that the two siblings have never loved each other.
12. Kate Hudson
Kate and Oliver Hudson were famously raised by Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, but their biological father is singer and actor Bill Hudson. And it turns that out they’re not exactly keen on him. To this day, in fact, Kate says that she doesn’t consider him to be her father. Any efforts he’s made to contact the siblings, meanwhile, have been rebuffed. The relationship probably wasn’t helped by the fact that Hudson left Hawn when Kate was only 18 months old.
11. Heather Graham
Family feuds can often be exaggerated by the press. For example, the accepted narrative with Heather Graham had always been that her strict Catholic parents didn’t approve of her nude scenes in Boogie Nights. However, they’ve since gone on record to say that they’ve never fully understood why she distanced herself from them. In fact, they’ve even speculated that she did so in order to make her life seem more interesting.
10. Nick Carter
Nick Carter hasn’t exactly been in the spotlight much since the Backstreet Boys split. Even so, he did briefly host a show on VH1 that documented his personal life. However, the series didn’t touch on his tumultuous relationship with his parents, with whom he cut ties at around the same time the show was canceled. Sources have suggested that they had been pressuring him for money.
9. Macaulay Culkin
Once probably the most famous child star on the planet, Macaulay Culkin is perhaps the best example of how the parents of celebrity kids can mishandle things. After Culkin’s parents divorced, each tried to take control of their son’s $11 million estate. When they both failed, though, his father abandoned him.
8. Anne Heche
Anne Heche famously entered into a relationship with Ellen DeGeneres after appearing on Ellen. And after their three-year affair ended, Heche had a nervous breakdown, which was widely reported at the time. What isn’t as well known, however, is that she was sexually abused by her late father. What’s more, her mother, who has run a Christian support group to “cure” homosexuality, wants nothing to do with her. Probably just as well.
7. Rosie O’Donnell
It’s one thing to be a famous person dealing with difficult parents or siblings. But what about being a celebrity and having to deal with difficult children? Rosie O’Donnell knows full well about this situation: her daughter Chelsea distanced herself from her family so much that her mother didn’t even know that she had gotten married. Furthermore, Rosie only found out about the wedding after Chelsea became hospitalized, and medical staff said that they would only release information to her husband. Yikes.
6. Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods’ marital issues are well documented, but he’s had another big family problem to deal with, too. In particular, the golfer hasn’t had any contact with his half-brother Kevin since 2006, even when Kevin was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis three years later. It’s still unclear exactly why Tiger won’t contact or offer help to his ailing sibling.
5. Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie is the daughter of actor Jon Voight, and their relationship has been pretty volatile for many years. It’s thought that their difficulties date back to when he cheated on Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand. And although they reconciled in 2007, the pair still clash, with Voight sometimes even criticizing Jolie’s own approach to parenting.
4. Rob Kardashian
All of the Kardashian/Jenner family lock horns from time to time on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Nonetheless, it’s Rob who is regarded by most as the pariah of the family. This largely stems from the clan’s attitude towards Rob’s former fiancée Blac Chyna. He has consequently lashed out at his siblings in various ways, such as publicly tweeting his half-sister Kylie’s phone number.
3. Noel and Liam Gallagher
The feud between brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher, who co-founded the band Oasis together, is one of the most famous clashes in music history. For decades the pair have traded insults, bickered, broken up, reconciled and then feuded yet again. To this day, Liam still fires barbs at Noel and has gone on record to say that the only thing likely to stop him from doing so would be Twitter shutting down.
2. Elton John
The idea of a parent disliking your partner is disturbing, but imagine if your mother called them a “f**king a**hole” in a newspaper? Elton John’s mother did exactly that, having previously made it clear she didn’t approve of his husband David Furnish. The two remained estranged for eight years but have since reconciled.
1. Mischa Barton
Mischa Barton’s mother, Nuala, is actively involved in her daughter’s life. However, that isn’t always a good thing. Their disputes have reached the courts twice now – firstly in 2015 when Mischa accused Nuala of stealing her money, then again in July 2016 over a disagreement about the $7 million home in Beverly Hills that they jointly owned.
