Acting sensation Channing Tatum has had an up and down relationship with “Price Tag” singer Jessie J. But it’s always been quite clear that the feelings between them are real. And when an internet troll dissed the pair, Tatum didn’t hesitate to let the world know just what Jessie J means to him.
Tatum and Jessie J kept their romance quiet when it first started, so no one knows when or where they actually lit the flame. However, the initial time that they met in public was at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards. On that occasion, Jessie J gave the still-married Tatum the prize for Best Comedic Performance.
But it seems that by October of 2018 the two were an item. A social media user reported seeing them at a mini golf course, and soon Tatum was being spotted at Jessie J’s concerts. Their fling lasted for a bit more than a year before they split. However, they couldn’t stay apart, and before long, Tatum was telling Instagram that it was on again.
For her part, Jessie J was born Jessica Ellen Cornish in March 1988 in London, England. She first trod onto the stage in a West End musical but hit the big time when she started a recording career. After “Do It Like A Dude” captured notice, “Price Tag” became a chart-topper across the world. She then followed these hits with the debut album Who You Are in 2011.
Further hits from the album followed, in particular “Domino” – which hit number one in the U.K. and went to number six on the U.S.’ Billboard Hot 100. Sophomore album Alive kept Jessie J’s name in the news, and its successor Sweet Talker was a smash hit in the States as well as at home.
Channing Tatum’s background is somewhat different, however. The Alabama native was born in April 1980 and started his working life in various jobs – including roofing. But it was stripping that started him on the entertainment path, and the experience as “Chan Crawford” is reflected in his hit movie Magic Mike.
And the movie was successful enough to spawn a sequel: Magic Mike XXL. Tatum also starred in comedy hits 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street. Given that he was chosen as the Sexiest Man Alive in 2012, it’s no surprise that he’s also starred in romance flicks as well as strutting his stuff in several action films.
On the set of one of Tatum’s earliest movies, 2006’s Step Up, he met actress Jenna Dewan. Their screen kisses later turned into more meaningful ones, and three years later they walked down the aisle in a Malibu ceremony. In May 2013 Dewan then gave birth to their daughter: Everly Elizabeth Maiselle.
Unfortunately, the marriage didn’t last, and the pair posted a joint statement to Instagram in 2018. It read, “We have lovingly chosen to separate as a couple. We fell deeply in love so many years ago and have had a magical journey together.”
Dewan and Tatum were adamant that no “salacious events” had let to their breakup. They said, “We are still a family and will always be loving dedicated parents to Everly. We won’t be commenting beyond this, and we thank you all in advance for respecting our family’s privacy.” Consequently, the split was finalized into divorce in November of 2019.
In the months after splitting from Dewan, Tatum hooked up with Jessie J. In October 2018 an insider was sharing the details with TV show Entertainment Tonight. They said, “[Their] relationship is very new. They truly just hit it off. It’s only been six months since [Tatum] and [Dewan] separated… [Tatum] really likes Jessie J.”
In the same month, an alleged eyewitness told Entertainment Tonight that the couple were spotted lunching together in Seattle, Washington. They said, “[Jessie J and Tatum] were super-sweet [and] super nice people. [They] were sitting next to each other. [He] had his arm around her chair but they weren’t all over each other. They were very low-key.”
When Tatum’s wife heard about the couple’s dating, she didn’t appear to be shocked. An insider told E! News, “[Dewan] knew that [Tatum] was dating and it wasn’t a surprise. A friend had told her what was going on.” Apparently, provided Tatum focused on his daughter, Dewan was okay with it.
In November 2018 another rubbernecker spied Tatum on his way out of Jessie J’s L.A. residence in the morning. Later the same day, he took daughter Everly to see his girlfriend sing live. A little more than a week after that, Jessie J returned the favor and tagged him on social media after watching the first night of the Magic Mike Live show.
Later that same month Tatum sent the internet wild when he made the relationship social media official. Under a picture of Jessie J performing in London, he wrote, “This woman just poured her heart out on stage at the Royal Albert Hall. Whoever was there got to witness something special. Wow.”
Jessie J’s next trip to watch Magic Mike Live was a bit more special. This time Tatum looked her up after the show, and the couple slow danced to Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.” A supposed source told U.K. tabloid The Sun, “They were hugging, and she was sat on his lap – they looked so happy and in love together.”
Things went quiet after that, and little was heard from the pair until March 2019. Then Tatum popped up on Jessie J’s Instagram – posting a comment that showed that they were still an item. He wrote, “Hottest Instagram food model in the game right now.” The next day, she shared a rap that he had penned for her, “Yes I won’t rest till I caress. Fresh face Jess. I will finesse till Success. Never digress. Just progress. Bless.”
And things were obviously going well since marriage was in the air. Yes, the couple had been talking about getting wed, as someone supposedly close to them told New! magazine. They said, “Jessie J and [Tatum’s] relationship has been going from strength to strength lately, which has really taken their friends by surprise. In fact, things have got so serious they’ve even discussed getting hitched.”
And Tatum’s birthday greeting to Jessie J posted on Instagram indicated a fierce love. He wrote, “Wishing you the happiest day filled with all the love and all the light. You came into this world on this day and lit it on fire. You have blessed our eyes, our ears, our hearts and our lives. So thank you for just being you. You are so very special. Happy birthday, baby.”
When Tatum’s birthday arrived the next month, Jessie J was a bit more restrained. There was no gushing from the singer, but she placed a crown on his head in a picture that she posted to social media. Notably, this was the first time that she’d released a photo of them together.
A couple of months later Jessie J claimed that the couple were actually going slow. When asked whether they were considering having a child, she told radio station Heart FM’s Breakfast show, “No! No, just because he’s Channing Tatum everyone’s kind of sped us up in to this, like, ‘Are you getting married? Are you doing this?’”
However, in August 2019 the talk was that the two were going to get a house together in rural Norfolk, England. An insider told The Sun, “Jessie J and [Tatum’s] relationship has been going from strength to strength. They still spend a lot of time in America, but when they’re in the U.K. they find London quite intense so enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the countryside.”
However, though things seemed from the outside to have been going well, there were problems in the relationship. A source shared some bad news with Us Weekly magazine. They said, “Tatum] and Jessie J broke up about a month ago. They are still really close and still good friends.” Apparently, they had mutually decided to split largely because they needed to live in different countries.
After their split, Jessie J posted several times about hurting others without meaning to. She wrote, “Let’s heal so we can stop accidentally hurting people we want to love because we are projecting our own wounds on to them.” But whatever Jessie J meant by that rather cryptic comment, it presaged the return of her romance with Tatum.
The split only lasted a month, and the pair apparently got back together in L.A. in January 2020. They were seen in a furniture store, although watchers weren’t sure whether the romance was back on. A source said to E! News, “They were both dressed down in sweats and trying to be low-key. No PDA but both were in great moods and together the whole time.”
So it turned out that when a source had told Cosmopolitan magazine back in December that they had stayed good friends, being “really close,” they hadn’t been lying. Having been split up, they’d realized just how good that friendship was. And a source at E! News confirmed that they had reunited.
The source said, “They took a few weeks apart but ultimately decided they really care about each other.” And it seemed that the pair were “very happy to be spending time together again.” The insider added, “Jessie J has been staying at [Tatum’s] house this past week [and they’re] super giddy around each other.”
Tatum and Jessy J made several appearances together in public – letting everyone know they were back on. The couple were seen at parties connected with the Grammy Awards, and they weren’t shy about being photographed together. Meanwhile, the couple shared their happiness about rekindling their love story on social media.
Tatum showed his feelings in the form of a photo of him and Jessie J kissing. But not everyone was equally as happy to see him back with Jessie J. Referring to his ex-wife, one troll wrote, “[Dewan] looks better with you.” But the stripping superstar was not going to take that one lying down.
Tatum clapped back at the bad commenter, writing, “Hey… I don’t usually address s*** like this. But you seem as good of a terrible happy people hating thoughtless person as any of them. Why don’t you seriously think about what you’re doing? It’s hurtful, and I ain’t about it.”
Defending Jessie J, Tatum continued, “If [you’re going to be] a horrible hateful person on my page and [don’t] support the infinite and untouchable beauty and woman that Jess is… please kindly get TF out of here. No one wants you here.”
Tatum continued with his praise of Jessie J, and it seemed that he certainly didn’t agree that he looked better with Dewan. He wrote, “And [there is no one] more stunning and beautiful to look at but even more as a human than Jess. And yeah that includes my ex. Sorry about your opinion. But what I said is facts. Just facts. Okay bye, be careful with your actions. It’s what you create for yourself.”
When the steam had stopped pouring out, and Tatum had calmed a little, he decided to clarify what he meant. The star confirmed that he hadn’t meant to denigrate his ex-wife, writing, “And just to be super clear for the other people that love to turn s*** around. [Dewan] is beautiful and amazing in her own right.”
The love was flowing both ways, as Jessie J shared a video on Instagram. To caption it, she wrote, “When you surrender and fearlessly act on the truth that always was. Love glows and grows in a different way. Happiness from the inside out. I love you so much baby… The way you love me and the way I love you and the way we feel it is all that matters.”
The loved-upness went all the way to 11 when the couple posted videos to Instagram that featured them both showing their moves. In them, the two shook a tail feather to the sounds of Sam Smith, with Jessie J breaking into song and dance while listening to the Brit’s “I’ll Give You Everything.”
Not to be outdone by Jessie J’s spinning caper, Tatum showed off the moves that made his name in Magic Mike. He wrote in his caption, “[Sam Smith] is the mood right now!” And if that wasn’t enough, his belle almost broke the internet with a video of the two smooching on the sofa.
However, not everyone quite got into the spirit. Dewan’s boyfriend, Steve Kazee, fired off an Instagram story that featured a gif of Will Farrell saying, “Watch your mouth.” Although he didn’t keep the gif up long, he did write over it, “that reckless talk bruh…” Kazee didn’t confirm that this was a message for Tatum, though.
Things have been a little frosty between Tatum and Dewan. The latter has made moves to go back to her maiden name, and the pair were also reported to be struggling over custody and property. However, Dewan had also managed to move on; at the time of writing, she’s still expecting a child with Kazee.
Tatum continued to praise his woman, posting a picture with the caption, “Sculpture of magic.” And he agreed with Lil Duval when the comedian posted, “Your relationship doesn’t need to make sense to anyone, except you and your partner. It’s a relationship. Not a community project.” To that, Tatum simply added, “Facts.”
So in March 2020 the couple were firing on all cylinders. They were seen out and about in Hollywood, and the romance seemed very much to be alive. Whether Jessie J will end up the second Mrs. Tatum remains to be seen, but for now the rollercoaster relationship seems to be on the upslope.
