Born in Harlem, New York, in 1924 to West Indian immigrants, Cicely Tyson began her career on the catwalk before switching her focus to acting. She made her debut on the stage before hitting the small screen in 1951’s Frontiers of Faith and then the big screen in 1956’s Carib Gold. She went on to land further TV roles in East Side/West Side and Guiding Light.
