In 2014, a criminal mugshot went viral across the internet. It was for an unusual reason: the guy in it was really, really hot. So hot, in fact, that people didn’t really care about his violent history. His name was Jeremy Meeks, and now he’s a model who’s dating a reality TV star, Chloe Green. Chloe’s father, disgraced billionaire Sir Philip Green, commands a vast fortune that one day might be hers. It all sounds like the plot of a movie, but it’s very much true. And recently there’s been another twist in the tale.
Chloe Green was one of the stars of Made in Chelsea, a show chronicling the life of rich and beautiful Londoners. She joined the show in 2011 and quickly made a name for herself with all the drama going on in her life. First she dated Ollie Locke, a nightclub host who later came out as gay. Then after leaving the show she hooked up with Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez’s ex-husband.
Since Marc was 44 at the time, and Chloe was only 21, the couple met with a little controversy. But Chloe’s no stranger to that. Her father, Sir Philip Green, is an extremely controversial figure himself. The billionaire businessman has been dubbed “the British Donald Trump” by the media, and it’s certainly not a compliment.
Sir Philip’s love of splashing his cash, as well as his political ambitions, ended up making him a pariah in the U.K. In 2010, the high-flying businessman was selected by then-Prime Minister David Cameron to conduct a review on government spending, and this was greeted with outrage, as Sir Philip was alleged to be a major tax avoider.
More trouble for the Green family came in 2016. Sir Philip came under fire for his treatment of the fashion chain BHS, which he had sold for just £1 the previous year. “This owner extracted hundreds of millions of pounds from the business and walked away to his favorite tax haven,” shadow business secretary Angela Eagle claimed during a House of Commons debate. There were even calls to strip Sir Philip of his knighthood.
But while her father was weathering a massive crisis, it seemed Chloe was pursuing another romance. And it was an incredibly unconventional one. After splitting from Marc, Chloe had caught the attention of Jeremy Meeks, famous criminal-turned-model. Ever since his mugshot had gone viral in 2014, the “hot felon” had been riding the wave. In 2016 he had signed a modelling contract.
However, the hot felon’s history was not a pleasant one. In 2014, after his mugshot hit the internet, TMZ dug up the details of his past. In 2002, it transpired, Jeremy had “allegedly jumped a 16-year-old and beat him to a pulp.” He had gone to prison after making a plea deal and fallen in with a gang, the Northside Gangster Crips.
But Jeremy’s family insisted he had changed. His niece spoke to tabloid newspaper the Daily Mail about the man she knew. “He is a loving father, husband, brother, and uncle,” she said. “He has a past and because of it, he is being stereotyped. We wish all the judgement would stop… He just wants to get home to his family.”
At the time, Jeremy was married to Melissa Meeks, the mother of his young child, and a person he’d been with for eight years. Their relationship had weathered Jeremy’s time in prison and his sudden fame as a model – but it couldn’t weather Chloe. As soon as Jeremy met the young heiress, it was all over, and Melissa was devastated.
She, too, went to the Daily Mail to tell her story. And she was actually harder on Chloe than the man who had broken her heart. “I know it takes two to tango, but she knew he was married. To me, that’s unforgivable,” she said. “What sort of woman would do something like this to another woman? My marriage wasn’t perfect, but I thought it could be saved, until this happened.”
The following month, an anonymous person made some cryptic comments to Hollywood Life about the Chloe-Jeremy affair. “Melissa has major doubts about Jeremy’s sincerity or integrity in his current relationship with Chloe,” a “source close to the former couple” told the website. “Melissa fears Jeremy is just using Chloe, but she hopes, for Chloe’s sake, she is wrong.”
Nothing about the affair indicated that this would be a couple that remained together for any length of time. And yet in March 2018 there came some sudden news. “Multiple sources” had confirmed to Us Weekly that Chloe was pregnant with Jeremy’s baby. It would be the first child for the 27-year-old heiress.
The Twittersphere had mixed feelings on the news. But Melissa had the most quietly damning things to say. “Starting a family with a billionaire’s daughter is the golden ticket, right?” she told the Mail during an interview published on March 30. “I don’t think Chloe’s anything spectacular. She’s very average-looking. I’ve never met her, so maybe she has an amazing personality. Or maybe it’s her bank account.”
She also revealed something else, something even more upsetting. In the midst of her husband’s affair, she had gotten pregnant by him, but she had lost the baby. And she also had to watch her child with Jeremy, Jeremy Jr., accept Chloe as a potential stepmother. “Perhaps when Chloe’s a mother she’ll understand how hurt I felt. In fairness, Jeremy Jr. says she’s nice to him.”
“I want him to be happy,” she went on. “He spent Christmas and New Year’s Eve with [Jeremy and Chloe] on the yacht. They flew to Florida on a private jet. Her parents were there, too.” Ah yes – the billionaire parents-soon-to-be-grandparents. What did they make of their daughter having the child of a man notorious for crime?
According to an “insider” who spoke to Hollywood Life on March 28, Chloe didn’t even inform her parents that she was expecting. They found out via the media! “Chloe’s family was initially disappointed by the news, they wish she had told them herself,” the anonymous person said. “They had no idea things between Chloe and Jeremy were that serious. She had talked about wanting to have kids, but her parents didn’t think it would happen so quickly.”
And it didn’t sound like the Greens were all that keen on their daughter’s choice of partner. “Chloe’s parents are going to be keeping a close eye on Jeremy and her dad is working with lawyers to get legal docs in place to protect his daughter and future grandchild,” the insider claimed. But the very same day, the Evening Standard reported that things actually weren’t that bad.
“Her parents have recently done an unexpected U-turn on Jeremy, and are now embracing him as one of the Greens. They are resigned to the fact he’ll be a part of their lives forever,” the Evening Standard reported another anonymous source as saying. While use of the word “resigned” doesn’t sound necessarily promising, it seems the couple are supporting their daughter.
There may well be a wedding in the near future. On April 2, the Daily Star tabloid reported that Chloe was planning a “shotgun wedding” and had already sent out invites. “A lot of Chloe’s relatives behind closed doors are saying they are disgusted with the way she is getting married so quickly,” the anonymous “source close to the Greens” added.
The Chloe-Jeremy story is a complicated one no doubt, but despite the possible disapproval of her family things do look promising for them. At the end of March the pair were spotted entering a baby store and spending $6,000 there. And Jeremy did once say, back in November 2017 when speaking to the Daily Mirror, “I love Chloe for her and if she didn’t have a dollar I wouldn’t give a s**t because we’re so happy.” Let’s hope the happiness lasts.
