In October 2018 Kate Hudson gave birth to her first child with partner Danny Fujikawa. And the Hollywood star, who already has two sons from previous relationships, opted for a name with a very touching meaning. Here’s the story behind her unusual choice.
Born in Los Angeles in 1979, Kate Hudson is the progeny of Bill Hudson and Hollywood legend Goldie Hawn. Following her biological parents’ divorce, though, she and her actor brother, Oliver, were raised by Hawn and her long-term partner, Kurt Russell. And after graduating from college prep school Crossroads in Santa Monica, California, Hudson decided to follow in her acting family’s footsteps.
Hudson actually made her big-screen debut in 1998’s Desert Blue. This preceded appearances in 1999’s 200 Cigarettes and 2000’s Gossip, Dr. T & the Woman and About Adam. But her big break came after her performance as a seasoned groupie in Almost Famous. Hudson even picked up an Oscar nod and a Golden Globe for her supporting turn in the Cameron Crowe-directed comedy drama.
Then, after appearing alongside Heath Ledger in The Four Feathers, Hudson became something of a rom-com favorite. She shared top billing with Matthew McConaughey in both How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Fool’s Gold, for instance. And she also played the leading lady in the likes of Alex and Emma, Raising Helen and My Best Friend’s Girl.
Hudson’s other films in her breakthrough decade included the otherworldly thriller The Skeleton Key, broad comedy You, Me and Dupree and musical Nine. She also starred alongside Anne Hathaway in the critically mauled but commercially successful Bride Wars. And in 2007 she directed father figure Kurt Russell in a short film titled Cutlass.
Three years later, Hudson played a serial killer’s wife in Sundance Festival hit The Killer Inside Me. She then returned to lighter fare in rom-com Something Borrowed and Glee before appearing as a photographer in The Reluctant Fundamentalist. Hudson went on to star in Good People and Rock the Kasbah, lend her voice to Kung Fu Panda 3 and show up in ensemble comedy Mother’s Day.
But Hudson’s talents extend far beyond acting. In 2013, in fact, she launched her own workout clothing range, Fabletics. She’s also published self-help books Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body and Pretty Fun: Creating and Celebrating a Lifetime of Tradition. And in 2018 she became a brand ambassador for Soho Jeans.
It’s fair to say that interest in Hudson’s private life has sometimes overshadowed her professional output too. In 2000, you see, she married The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, and four years later the pair welcomed son Ryder into the world. Sadly, however, the couple divorced in 2007 on the grounds of “irreconcilable differences.”
Then, in 2010, Hudson entered into a relationship with Muse vocalist and guitarist Matt Bellamy. A year later, the pair got engaged and had a son called Bingham together. But the celebrity couple never did walk down the aisle, and in 2014 they announced their separation.
Three years later, in 2017, Hudson began dating another musician in Danny Fujikawa. He’s the one-time frontman of Californian folk outfit Chief, and she’d first met him 15 years previously as the stepbrother of her best friends Erin and Sara Foster. Hudson once told CBS daytime TV show The Talk, “We kinda skipped through the part of knowing what the hiccups were. You kinda skip the part of going, ‘Oh, you’re like that?’”
In April 2018 Hudson shared with her many Instagram followers that she and Fujikawa were expecting a baby daughter and posted a video clip of their gender-reveal celebrations. Rani was then born in October. It turns out that there’s a heartwarming story behind her unique name too.
And after announcing her daughter’s arrival on Instagram, Hudson revealed how the couple arrived at her name. She wrote, “We have decided to name our daughter Rani (pronounced Ronnie) after her grandfather, Ron Fujikawa. Ron was the most special man who we all miss dearly. To name her after him is an honor.”
Ron Fujikawa, who was Danny’s father, passed away in late 2012. A lawyer who had co-founded his own firm with three colleagues, Ron also had two other sons, Braden and Michael, with his ex-wife, Melissa Linehan. He spent the last decade of his life with his “devoted companion” Rebecca Foster.
Hudson also told her Instagram followers that both mother and baby were healthy. She posted, “Everyone is doing well and happy as can be. Our family thanks you for all the love and blessings that have been sent our way, and we send ours right back.”
A few days later, Hudson took to Instagram to share a photo of her daughter for the first time. Rani was pictured sleeping sporting a cute blush-colored hat with a bow and wrapped cozily inside a blanket. Hudson captioned the image, “Our little rosebud.”
And Hudson has continued to give her Instagram followers a glimpse into her newly expanded family life. She later shared an equally cute video of her partner giving their baby daughter a kiss. She captioned the clip, “Kind beautiful man, your pure love is such a gift #daddysgirl.”
Hudson also returned to the limelight just five weeks after giving birth when she attended a United Nations World Food Programme event in California. The star told People magazine, “I’m just starting to get the itch to get out a little bit more, but I’m enjoying every second.” The humanitarian agency had given Hudson the role of a Goodwill Ambassador just the week before.
Hudson had previously spoken about why she took on the role in an official statement. She said, “The work of the World Food Programme is so much more than just feeding people. It’s about strengthening families, rebuilding communities and ensuring everyone, everywhere has access to the food they need to not only survive but thrive.”
When asked what was different about having a daughter, Hudson replied, “The cooing. She’s all-girl. She’s feminine.” Hudson also revealed that one family member is particularly smitten with Rani: grandfather Kurt. “Seeing Kurt with her is really special,” Hudson told People.
Hudson then told the magazine that Rani bears more than a passing resemblance to the baby’s father. She said, “She’s a Fujikawa. It’s the cutest thing. When you love your partner so much, and you see your child look just like your partner, it’s like your heart melts.”
