Nowadays, celebrity pregnancies aren’t always revealed through simple press statements. Today’s stars are frequently using social media as a method of sharing their news, in fact – and they’re doing so in all kinds of inventive and heart-warming ways. And that’s precisely the route that Jessica Alba took when she revealed some exciting information about the latest addition to her family.
Born in Pomona, California, in 1981, Alba experienced a difficult childhood beset by illness, constant relocations and OCD. She still managed to pursue an acting career while growing up, however, appearing in the likes of Camp Nowhere, The Secret World of Alex Mack and Flipper. Then, after graduating from high school, she honed her craft further by studying at New York’s Atlantic Theater Company.
And Alba’s big break arrived in 1999 when she was cast as a mean girl in rom-com Never Been Kissed. In 2000, meanwhile, she made even more of a name for herself by starring as Max Guevara in Dark Angel. Alba would bag a Golden Globe nomination for her performance as the genetically engineered soldier.
After that, Alba went on to land major parts in dance flick Honey and neo-noir Sin City. Furthermore, her profile received yet another major boost when she was cast as Sue Storm in the Fantastic Four franchise. And by the end of the ’00s, she’d also appeared in the likes of Awake and The Love Guru.
Plus, Alba’s career has continued to thrive into the 2010s, when she’s been seen on screen in movies such as The Killer Inside Me, Valentine’s Day, Machete and Little Fockers. Her most recent films, meanwhile, have included The Veil, Mechanic: Resurrection and Barely Lethal. And she’s branched out beyond the big screen, too. In 2013, for instance, she topped the New York Times Best Sellers list with her autobiographical book The Honest Life.
Perhaps Alba’s most notable achievement outside of acting, however, has been her success as a businesswoman. In 2012 she launched a non-toxic household products company, which, just two years later, was valued at a whopping $1 billion. The Honest Company’s rapid rise saw Alba hailed as among “America’s Richest Self-Made Women” by Forbes, in fact.
And, somewhat inevitably, Alba’s personal life has also attracted attention over the years. In 2001 she got engaged to Michael Weatherly, a Dark Angel co-star 12 years her senior; the pair split two years later, however, and Alba later admitted that she couldn’t explain why she’d accepted his proposal. Thankfully, though, the actress’ next long-term boyfriend would prove to be the one.
Alba began dating Cash Warren during the filming of the 2005 remake of Fantastic Four, and four years later the pair married in LA. Shortly after, the couple welcomed their first child, Honor Marie, and in 2011 they added to their family with the birth of Haven Garner. Then, in July 2017 Alba revealed that she was pregnant for a third time.
And the star announced her happy news on Instagram in the most adorable way. Specifically, Alba posted a picture of herself and her beaming daughters Honor and Haven, each holding an inflatable balloon number denoting their birth order; the mom-to-be has the third balloon. The photo was accompanied by the message, “@Cash_warren and I are officially going to be outnumbered #babyonboard #herewegoagain #blessed.”
But, of course, many fans wanted to know whether Alba and Warren’s third child would be a boy or a girl. And just as with the initial news about her pregnancy, the star later revealed the gender of the baby in another heart-warming Instagram clip featuring her daughters.
In the video, Alba can be seen with her daughters opening up a large box positioned over her head. The box then showers the three with blue balloons and confetti, suggesting the clan will soon include a boy. The actress captioned the footage, “#officiallyoutnumbered #babyboy#cantwaittospoilhim #hugsandkissesforlife#soontobemamaofthree.”
Prior to uploading the social media video, though, Alba was a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. There, she joked that she only became pregnant for a third time because she had forgotten what motherhood was like. Alba remarked on the show, “I don’t remember any of it, the strollers, diapers, cribs, I don’t remember any of it… the sleeping!”
The actress also admitted that the new baby’s name is causing some heated debate in the Alba household. In particular, she revealed that, as with her daughters, she wants her third child to have an unusual name beginning with the letter “H.” She ruled out Fallon’s suggestions of Heart, Hermit and Hale, however.
And Alba also told the host that she is trying to keep her cravings at bay third time around. She explained, “I actually dream about desserts. But I’m trying not to gain so much weight with this baby, so I just dream about them. I want all the shaved ice with ice cream on the bottom. That’s my thing.”
Meanwhile, in an interview on The Rachael Ray Show, the mom-to-be revealed that her daughters are just as excited about the new baby as she is. There, she commented, “My six-year-old, she was worried about being a middle child. But she gets to be a big sister and a little sister. So, she’s stoked about that – and she doesn’t have to compete with another girl.”
Then, two months after revealing that she’d be having a boy, Alba was thrown a stylish baby shower at Beverly Hills’ Ladurée. The star enjoyed high tea with mom Cathy and fellow organizer Kelly Sawyer, along with famous friends Rachel Zoe and Molly Sims. The party treated Alba to keepsakes for the baby and a three-tier cake emblazoned with the words “It’s a boy.”
Alba would later post several photos of the event on Instagram, including one captioned, “Tea life w my oldskool homies.” It was also revealed that at the shower the actress gave a speech where she joked, “He’s gonna fall out of me anytime now, so this is good that we’re doing this.” She then told her entourage how appreciative she was to consider them as friends.
For the January 2018 edition of Good Housekeeping, meanwhile, Alba has also divulged that she was initially scared of becoming a parent in case she lost her “sense of self.” But, she told the magazine, motherhood has actually helped her to further define who she is. The actress added that she hopes that her strong character will prove to be a positive influence on her children.
And in the same feature, Alba acknowledged that her kids’ privileged lifestyle can make it difficult to impose her values on them. Nevertheless, the star remains determined to become a good role model. She explained to Good Housekeeping, “Recently, I told my oldest, who doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, ‘It’s okay to win a race; it doesn’t mean you’re bragging. Don’t hold yourself back.’”
According to reports, Alba is due to give birth to her first son sometime in January 2018. And although she has recently admitted that her acting career will take a backseat for the foreseeable future, there’s still one more opportunity to see her on the big screen. That’s because Alba stars as reporter Beth Flowers in Ted Melfi’s festive comedy drama El Camino Christmas – and that’ll have to be enough to keep her die-hard fans satisfied for the time being.
