When Rumer Willis Celebrated A Milestone Event, Her Parents Came Together For A Special Reunion

Rumer Willis was still a young child when her movie-star parents Demi Moore and Bruce Willis divorced. Since then, she’s gained step-parents and half-siblings, as well as becoming a famous actress in her own right. In August 2018 her parents reunited in order to celebrate Rumer – and appeared to have a fantastic time in the process.

Rumer Willis followed in the footsteps of her parents when it came to choosing a career. Like them, Rumer’s an actor. She’s part of the cast of hit TV series Empire and will appear in the upcoming Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. And she’s also known to Dancing with the Stars fans as the winner of season 20 of the show.

Life wasn’t always easy for Rumer during her childhood, however. “I think one of the hardest parts was growing up with having your whole life kind of be on display and have people have an opinion about it,” she told Larry King in 2015. But her parents always tried to do their best for her, even after the divorce.

“I’m so thankful and grateful that my parents made such an effort at that time,” Rumer told King. “I never had to split up vacations or split up birthdays. They always made an effort to do all of the family events still together and made such an effort to still have our family be as one unit, as opposed to two separate things, which I think really made an impact.”

The reasons for Rumer’s parents’ divorce have been widely reported. Firstly, both were big in Hollywood – so big that they didn’t have time for each other. Secondly, the constant tabloid speculation about their relationship took a huge toll. “They won’t stop until one day they might be right,” Moore told Vanity Fair in 1993, and sadly they were.

Willis and Moore nonetheless seemed to pull off the almost impossible task of remaining friends after their divorce. In the aftermath of the split, Willis told the press he felt he’d failed as a husband and father. But he certainly appears to have succeeded as a friend. Indeed, when Moore married her third husband, Ashton Kutcher, Willis went to the wedding.

And during Rumer’s spell on Dancing with the Stars, both Willis and Moore showed up to support their daughter. Rumer’s younger sister Tallulah posted a picture on social media of the whole family – herself, Rumer, sister Scout and their parents – along with the caption: “rare.” It was a nice moment, although it perhaps indicated that Willis and Moore didn’t get together very often.

Still, one could be forgiven for mistakenly thinking there was bad blood between them after Moore participated in a Comedy Central roast of her ex-husband in July 2018. “For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Demi Moore,” she said. “I was married to Bruce Willis for the first three Die Hard movies, which makes sense because the last two sucked.”

And Moore even went on to mock Willis’ parenting skills. “Bruce is super generous. When our daughter Rumer was a baby and it was his turn to change the diaper in the middle of the night, he would lean over and whisper to me, ‘I’ll give you a thousand dollars right now if you change that diaper,’” she joked.

“Scout asked me not to say anything, but just last week he offered her a thousand dollars to change his diaper. Some things never change,” Moore went on. Thankfully, Willis seemed to take it all in good humor, even if it was coming from his ex-wife, and could be seen laughing.

And there was certainly no sign of animosity between Willis and Moore come August 2018. That was the month when Rumer celebrated her 30th birthday, and the whole family arrived to celebrate the milestone. As befits a family full of celebrities, they also posted photos and videos of the occasion to Instagram.

Rumer’s 24-year-old sister Tallulah shared a video, since deleted, of the family singing “Happy Birthday” to Rumer while she blew out her candles. Willis and Moore sat on opposite sides of the table as Rumer’s two sisters sang “We hope you come back… sober!” to her, possibly a reference to an announcement Rumer made back in 2017.

That year, Rumer announced on Instagram that she’d been sober for six months, although she didn’t actually say what she was sober from. Rumer used a subsequent interview in People magazine to put the record straight. “I wouldn’t consider saying I had a substance abuse problem by any means,” she explained. “I didn’t say I was sober from anything, I could have been sober from a food addiction or buying too many clothes or from relationships or whatever.”

Rumer’s sister Scout delivered a heartfelt tribute to Rumer on Instagram. “I know 30 can seem big and scary but you are going to thrive this year and I think it will be the best yet!” Scout wrote. “You are wholly enchanting when you allow your most pure self to shine and that is what I wish most for you this year!”

Tallulah expressed similar feelings. “You were the first big person I ever knew, and gave me the privilege of walking ahead of me and stubbing the metaphorical toe on all the ouchies in life so I wouldn’t have to,” she wrote. “You lead and you listen and you pause and you try, especially when it’s difficult you try. I love you my dreamy friend. Thirty looks damn good on you.”

There were plenty of family jokes at the party as well. In one picture uploaded to social media, Tallulah, Rumer and Scout all crowded around Willis, looking elegant and quirky. “Just before we took this photo my dad said, ‘hurry up, I have to fart,’” Scout joked on Instagram.

There was also a photo booth at the birthday party, and at one point Moore and Willis ventured inside to take some pictures with Tallulah. The cute pink snaps showed the three of them smiling together, as Willis planted a kiss on his daughter’s cheek.

Rumer also got in the booth with her parents and took a picture of them kissing her on the cheeks. “Thanks for making me,” she captioned the resulting image. That post racked up more than 50,000 likes and plenty of comments. “So happy your parents can get along. Wish more divorced parents did,” one viewer wrote.

There have been plenty of rumors (Rumers?) over the years about Willis and Moore possibly getting back together. And Willis reportedly encouraged Moore to enter rehab in 2013, which she duly did, indicating that there was still a strong bond between them. So could there really be a chance?

Well, all things considered, probably not. If the happy photographs snapped at Rumer’s birthday party are anything to go by, they’re both at good points in their lives right now. But that’s okay, because it seems like they’re much better off as friends. And it’s rare that a divorced couple can say that.
