Katie Kelzenberg had put herself out there to ask one of the world’s highest-paid actors to her senior prom. It was a long shot, but she had to try – just in case. Then, on one morning, as the announcements played at her high school in Stillwater, Minnesota, she heard a voice that she swiftly recognized.
Eighteen-year-old Kelzenberg attended Stillwater Area High School – the oldest institution of its kind in her home state of Minnesota. And by the time spring of her senior year rolled around, Kelzenberg knew that prom was just around the corner. So, the student headed online to ask her favorite actor, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a very important question.
In a video she shared on Twitter on April 15, 2018, Kelzenberg dressed up as Johnson, stood in front of a camera and said, “I would like to ask you to my senior prom.” She then pitched herself as a superfan of the former wrestler – and so a worthy date to the dance.
Kelzenberg made her case to Johnson by saying, “You may be wondering, ‘Why should I go to prom with her?’ Well, let me tell you why. I am [your] biggest fan. I love all of your movies. I even dressed up as you for Halloween.”
Then, after showing off her collection of merchandise emblazoned with Johnson’s image, Kelzenberg asked the star to her dance one last time – with a pun included. “Will you ‘Rock’ it at prom with me?” she asked, winking at the camera after she had made her request.
And Kelzenberg’s prom proposal ultimately went viral, racking up 331,000 views and more than 3,000 likes on Twitter. Luckily for the high school senior, though, Johnson was among the hundreds of thousands who saw her video. And the celebrity went above and beyond to respond.
Just five days after posting her video, Kelzenberg was sitting in class at Stillwater Area High School when an unexpected voice came over the PA system. “Let’s start this Friday morning announcement off with a little bit of fun and a little bit of excitement,” the voice said.
“Good morning to the Stillwater Area High School students,” the voice went on. Kelzenberg then seemingly realized who it was, as the shock was apparent on her face. But if anyone was still unaware as to the identity of the mystery speaker, the following words would have clued them in. “This is, as you might have guessed by now, Dwayne Johnson,” the voice said.
Johnson went on, “You’re probably thinking, ‘What is The Rock doing on our intercom system?’ Well, I’m sending a message to a very special young lady, and her name is Miss Katie Kelzenberg.” Upon hearing Johnson say her name, the student once again jumped with excitement.
“Now, Katie, I’m sure that you are so embarrassed right now,” Johnson added with a huge laugh – Kelzenberg giggled in response, too. But the actor had a reason for momentarily making her blush, he added.
“I just had to let you know that I appreciate how cool and awesome you are for inviting me to your prom,” Johnson said. Then, however, he gave her some bad news. “Unfortunately I can’t make [it],” the star explained.
It turned out that on May 5, 2018, the date of Kelzenberg’s senior prom, Johnson would be filming a movie in Hawaii – thousands of miles from Minnesota. Kelzenberg took the news in her stride, though, saying “That’s okay” in response to the news.
But Johnson hadn’t taken over the morning announcement simply to let Kelzenberg down. “Katie, because we are now best friends and I have so much love for you because you’re so awesome, [I have] a very special gift,” he said.
The movie star continued, “I have rented out a theater tomorrow… which I believe is very close to you. So, the gift is this – I want you to grab all your favorite friends and your closest family members and whoever you want to bring.”
And, Johnson revealed, Kelzenberg and her guests were invited to the theater to catch a screening of the actor’s movie, Rampage, the following afternoon. “All the popcorn and candy and soda you can drink, it’s all on me. Everything is free,” he added.
It turned out that the event would be open to quite a few, too. Johnson had “rented out 232 seats,” he subsequently revealed. “So, to all the students there at Stillwater Area High School, if Katie is down with it, then you guys talk to your teachers, and your school has all the details.”
But while that was the end of Johnson’s surprise, he still had a few more things to say. “By the way, I’m waiting for some chivalrous gentleman of a boy to take you to the prom. Or, you know what? Maybe you don’t need a boy at all. Maybe you just go with your girlfriends, and you guys have a blast,” the actor went on.
With that, though, it was time for Johnson to bid farewell. “Enjoy Rampage, have a blast at the prom, and, again, thank you for being awesome,” he said. And upon hearing his sign-off, students began to applaud, while Kelzenberg broke into tears.
But while Kelzenberg regained her composure to speak to her class after the announcement played, she was still at a loss for words. “I don’t know what to say. Like, what?” she said to her fellow students, according to ABC News.
And not only did Kelzenberg and her friends pack the movie theater to watch Rampage, as planned by Johnson, but she also got her dream prom date. How? Well, the 18-year-old later shared pictures of herself and her friends on their big night posing alongside a life-sized cardboard cut-out of the movie star.
