Photographers captured movie star Kate Beckinsale – famous for her roles in Pearl Harbor and Serendipity – holding hands with her new beau in the spring of 2020. The pictures got people talking, including TV host Wendy Williams. In fact, she didn’t mince her words on-air when she discussed the actress’s rumored new flame. Instead, Williams called her out on one glaring detail of the pair’s budding relationship.
Of course, it wasn’t just Williams who noticed this detail about Beckinsale’s new boyfriend. He wasn’t quite as big of a celebrity as her – compare his 99,000 Instagram followers to her 4.3 million. But the questions that the public and the talk show host had went beyond their disparate levels of fame.
In any case, most of the chatter remained far removed from the likes of a daytime talk show. However, on The Wendy Williams Show no topic is off-limits – and the host doesn’t have a problem speaking her mind. So she brought up Beckinsale’s new beau and proceeded to roast her for the relationship that had already shocked the actress’s fans.
In the early 1990s Kate Beckinsale had a tough decision to make. You see, she was studying French and Russian literature at the prestigious Oxford University. At the same time, she nabbed a starring role in Much Ado About Nothing with the likes of Denzel Washington, Emma Thompson and Keanu Reeves as her co-stars.
London-native Beckinsale’s instant success in the Kenneth Branagh production presented her with a slew of on-screen opportunities. But taking it all on would mean the budding star would have to drop out of her studies at Oxford. Bravely, she chose to do so, and left academia behind to chase her Hollywood dreams.
Although Beckinsale’s studies had nothing to do with the performing arts, it made sense that she would pursue an acting career. You see, her father, Richard Beckinsale, had starred on a BBC sitcom called Porridge, as well as its sequel, Going Straight. Sadly, he died of a massive heart attack when she was just five, but perhaps he’d passed on his artistic talent to his young daughter.
After leaving Oxford, Beckinsale’s career didn’t take off as quickly as it had started. Instead, she took roles in independent films and earned positive reviews acting in theatrical productions. But her big break was yet to come – and in 2001 she traded small indies for a major Hollywood blockbuster.
Yes, that year saw Beckinsale land a leading role in Pearl Harbor, co-starring Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett. Although critics widely agreed that the movie wasn’t great, some did laud the actress’s performance. For instance, Owen Gleiberman wrote for Entertainment Weekly that “the avid eyed, ruby lipped Kate Beckinsale” was “the rare actress whose intelligence gives her a sensual bloom.”
In the same year, Beckinsale starred opposite John Cusack in the romantic comedy Serendipity. According to Hello magazine, her performance had some calling her the next Meg Ryan of rom-coms. But Beckinsale wanted to be more than soft and sweet on-screen.
To switch up her image, Beckinsale changed course completely when she starred in Underworld, a supernatural action flick. In it, she played Selene, a vampire who finds herself in the middle of a battle between her kind and werewolves. And she was happy to do something different, saying, “I’m just glad to be doing a film where I’m not wearing some sort of corset or restrictive girdle.”
Starring in Underworld proved to be a turning point in Beckinsale’s career. She became an action starlet in movies including 2004’s Van Helsing, in which she starred opposite Hugh Jackman. At a press conference for the flick, the actor revealed that she fit right into the genre. Yes, Jackman told Blackfilm.com, “Occasionally Kate would pull the English rose thing but then as soon as action is said she’s tougher than all of us.”
Furthermore, Beckinsale starred in action movies including 2009’s Whiteout, as well as Contraband and Total Recall, both released in 2012. And she’s appeared in five Underworld movies. Although she did tell Variety in 2018 that she wouldn’t reprise her vampire role. She explained, “I wouldn’t return. I’ve done plenty of those.”
In more recent years, it seems Beckinsale prefers not to tether herself to a particular genre of movie or character. Instead, she chooses films by the people and script involved. The actress said, “It’s the script and the director. I’ve done indie movies where I’m sitting on a piece of folded carpet and it was wonderful. I’ve done great big movies that were the worst misery of my life. It all depends.”
Spreading her wings creatively has opened Beckinsale up to more success. For instance, in 2016 she starred in Love & Friendship, a Whit Stillman movie that combined two of Jane Austen’s stories into one. The Guardian’s Mark Kermode called Beckinsale “deliciously acerbic” in the film.
For her part in Love & Friendship, Beckinsale earned a Critics’ Choice Award nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy. And, since then, she has made the jump from the big screen to TV, too. The action star took the leading role in The Widow, which aired in 2019.
But Beckinsale’s life hasn’t just been about her work – she has always had a flourishing personal life, too. Yes, because long before she made it in Hollywood, the actress worked on a 1995 touring production with actor Michael Sheen. Their meeting kicked off an eight-year relationship, and they welcomed a daughter together named Lily Mo Sheen in 1999.
Then in 2003, both Beckinsale and Sheen starred in the movie Underworld. Shortly afterward the pair parted ways – and the actress embarked on a new relationship with someone else involved in the film industry. In fact, she went to marry the movie’s co-creator and director, Len Wiseman, in 2004.
Now, Beckinsale and Wiseman exchanged their vows at the Hotel Bel-Air, and they were married for 11 years. But in 2015 tabloids caught wind of the couple’s impending divorce. A source revealed to Us Weekly, “They tried to make it work, but they end up falling back into old habits and fighting.”
Strikingly, it took four years for Wiseman and Beckinsale to finalize their divorce. But that didn’t mean she waited long to move on. Instead, the Pearl Harbor star was linked to a handful of new beaus. For instance, in 2017 she dated Matt Rife, a comedian who was 21 when they started dating.
The then-40-something Beckinsale and Rife were an item for just a year. Afterward, though, her younger ex-boyfriend described their relationship as a difficult one when speaking to TMZ. He explained, “We dated for a year and it was… complicated. A lot of ups and downs.” By the time he gave his interview, though, the actress had already moved on.
This time, Beckinsale and Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson, then 25, turned heads when they were caught cuddling at a 2019 Golden Globes afterparty. And the pair all but confirmed their relationship at a March 2019 hockey game during which they passionately smooched one another.
Some thought Beckinsale and Davidson were an odd pairing, but those close to the actress knew he was just her type. A source told Us Weekly, “She’s always the life of the party and likes going out, dancing and hanging out around young people at hip places. It’s no surprise she likes Pete – he makes her laugh and she likes the fact that he’s younger than her.”
In the end, though, the laughter wasn’t enough to make Beckinsale and Davidson work. Instead, they split in April 2019, and, according to a source, it all came down to the distance between them. The Love & Friendship actress had her home base in Los Angeles, while the SNL actor lived in New York.
The source told In Touch Weekly, “They rushed into the relationship and fell head over heels without thinking about the logistics. It’s one of those whirlwind romances that moved too quickly.” Plus, the person continued, Beckinsale had begun “to question whether she should date someone more age-appropriate.”
That said, Beckinsale continued to not conform to what the world might consider an age-appropriate partner for her. Instead, in early 2020, she began dating Canadian musician Goody Grace. At the time, she was 46 and he was 22 – but, as a source told People, the actress couldn’t care less.
The source explained, “They have fun and [Beckinsale] seems happy. [Grace’s] age is not an issue for her. It’s just a number.” However, when word got out about their pairing, the public had to add their two cents – and the Underworld star had no trouble shutting them down on Instagram.
You see, in April 2020 Beckinsale shared a video of herself and her cat. The clip showed her trying to teach some new tricks to her feline. But the cute video left a wide-open comments section, in which at least one troll decided to comment on the actress’s rumored relationship with Goody.
In response to Beckinsale’s trick-teaching video, the troll commented, “Try and see if your new tom boy [sic] will adhere.” The Serendipity actress didn’t hesitate in replying with a zinger. She wrote back, “Try and see if you can spell and not just goon yourself straight out the gate.”
Now, Beckinsale’s thick skin in this situation would serve her well, considering more cutting remarks were yet to come. This time, though, they wouldn’t pop up beneath an Instagram post. Instead, another celebrity would launch her own attack on the actress’s new relationship with her much younger beau.
Of course, the woman voicing her disapproval was Wendy Williams, who first made a name for herself as a radio DJ who doled out tough love to her listeners. Then, she moved onto TV in 2009 to helm her eponymous talk show. She stuck with her normal, brash style despite the transition from radio to TV.
More than a decade later and little had changed about Williams’ straight-up personality. So, when Beckinsale and Goody’s new relationship was one of the bullet points on the talk show’s “Hot Topics” segment, the host didn’t hold back. Indeed, she shared her disapproval with her viewers.
Williams said, “[Beckinsale’s] got young boyfriend fever – I’m not down with this. Eventually, it’s going to come back to bite her in the behind.” Now, the talk show host could sympathize with the actress’s affinity for younger men post-divorce. You see, Williams, too, had recently gone through a split with her husband of 22 years, Kevin Hunter Sr.
Plus, Williams felt that Beckinsale should have been done with her toy boy phase. She said, “I get it, when you’re single that’s one of the first things you do – grab a youngin’.” But, she continued, “In the beginning of being single you do all kinds of things, believe me I know. But then, you settle into your singleness with your cats, your Cynthia, and your hummus.”
And then there was the detail that seemed to bother the host most of all – Goody’s age in comparison to the actress’s own daughter, Lily. Yes, Williams said, “Just saying like mother to mother, [you have a] 21-year-old daughter, you’re dating a 22-year-old. You might walk in the house one day, and he’s all in the bed with your daughter.”
However, Williams did end on a relatively positive note – she gave some advice to Beckinsale. The TV host said, “It’s been four years [since your split]… you’re 46 and gorgeous. It’s time to get on the good foot and date age-appropriate.” And, Williams noted, she was a fan of the Van Helsing star’s filmography.
Beckinsale hasn’t responded to Williams’ rant, but sources have revealed her daughter Lily’s thoughts on her relationship with Goody. They told In Touch Weekly, “Kate’s daughter isn’t bothered by the fact that Kate likes younger guys, and she is just used to it at this point.”
And the source only reiterated that Beckinsale wasn’t concerned with her partners’ ages. They went on to say, “Kate is attracted to younger guys that are creative – that’s just her type. She likes surrounding herself with them because she likes being ‘in the know’ and up to date on what’s cool.”
Other than that, Beckinsale and Goody have continued to step out together in the face of criticism from Williams and others. On May 16, 2020, they took a stroll through Malibu, but they were spending way more time together than that. Indeed, the duo had actually begun to cohabitate and exercise together, to boot.
Beyond their regular strolls, though, neither Beckinsale nor Goody have commented on the relationship rumors surrounding them. Instead, sources close to them do all of the talking. One told People that, “Kate enjoys his company. She finds him very mature, smart and creative.”
But Goody’s not the only guy keeping Beckinsale busy. You see, the actress has made a string of hilarious videos with her cat, Clive, which have made her followers laugh. In one popular video, she pretends to serve as the fluffy feline’s hairdresser, offering him a litany of beauty services before shaping his fur with a comb and scissors.
