These 40 Celebrities Never Got Married – And The Reasons Why May Surprise Their Fans

Some celebrities get married many times, but plenty of others chose not to at all.

Celebrity marriages are an endless source of entertainment for some, not least because some of the most high-profile ones have a tendency to end in divorce. However, there are some celebrities who choose not to get married at all – sometimes for that very reason, but often there are other factors at play. Some of these celebrities – and their reasons for remaining single – might surprise you.

40. Kylie Minogue

The pop princess has been engaged before, to British actor Joshua Sasse. However, after they split, she announced that she would probably never marry. Minogue told Red magazine in 2018, “Just going through ‘being engaged’ seems like an experiment, because I’d never as a girl or in all my life had a vision of getting married… Now I’m going to stick to my previous view. I don’t think marriage is for me.”

39. Mindy Kaling

Actress Mindy Kaling has had a long on-off relationship with her The Office co-star B.J. Novak, a relationship she admits is incredibly complicated. In 2015, she told Howard Stern that she probably would have married Novak when she was younger… but she didn’t. Now Kaling has a child, and she’s never revealed who the dad is, just that Novak is the godfather.

38. Sheryl Crow

Singer Sheryl Crow has been romantically linked in the past with other celebrities – Eric Clapton, Lance Armstrong and Owen Wilson – but she’s never wed despite engagements. However in 2019 she told People magazine she wasn’t against the idea, saying, “I would love [to get married]. But I don’t think it’s the end-all, be-all.”

37. Sarah Silverman

In 2015, while Sarah Silverman was in a relationship with actor Michael Sheen, she tweeted, “Just read that I wanna get married which is hilarious b/c I will never get married. Why would I want the govt involved in my love life? Ew.” She split from Sheen in 2018, and true to her word still hasn’t gotten hitched.

36. Bill Maher

The controversial comedian once dated model Coco Johnsen, and it ended badly, with Johnsen claiming that he had promised to marry her and gone back on it. These days Maher makes his position very clear on his official website, “I’m the last of my guy friends to have never gotten married, and their wives – they don’t want them playing with me. I’m like the escaped slave – I bring news of freedom.”

35. Mary-Louise Parker

Mary-Louise Parker was once in a relationship with fellow actor Billy Crudup, and even had a child with him… but then he famously left her for Claire Danes while Parker was pregnant. In 2015 she told The New York Times, “Maybe a psychiatrist would say I’m not married now because I have some sort of father thing. But you know what? That would be the least of my problems.”

34. Tyra Banks

Supermodel Tyra Banks has seemingly never felt the need to be married. For a while she was in a long-term relationship with photographer Erik Asla, and she had a child with him via a surrogate in 2016. But she – amicably – broke up with Asla the following year, and has remained unmarried ever since.

33. Allison Janney

Oscar winner Allison Janney keeps her personal life very private, but she would appear to be in a relationship with a film production supervisor 20 years her junior, Philip Joncas. Don’t expect her to wed him any time soon though. Back in 2016, when asked about marriage by E! News, Janney said, “I don’t believe in that institution.”

32. Tim Robbins

Tim Robbins was famously in a longterm relationship with actress Susan Sarandon, who’d already been divorced once. But they never made it official. In 2010, after the couple split, Sarandon told the Telegraph, “I thought that if you didn’t get married you wouldn’t take each other for granted as easily. I don’t know if after twentysomething years that was still true.”

31. Matt Dillon

In 2006, Oscar-nominated actor (and ex of Cameron Diaz) Matt Dillon told People, “I’m open to life now, even to marriage. I’m open to the idea that things will work out. I absolutely value change now. I don’t fear it. I accept it.” However, that was a long time ago, and he’s still never actually tied the knot.

30. Joan Jett

For decades, rumors have spread that the former Runaways rocker is either gay or bisexual, and she’s never confirmed exactly what her sexuality is. In 1994 she told Out magazine, “I’m not saying no, I’m not saying yes, I’m saying believe what you want.” However, one thing the public does know is that she’s never been married.

29. Al Pacino

Al Pacino has dated a lot of women, but never actually married any of them. According to one of his most famous girlfriends, Diane Keaton, she once challenged him to marry her or lose her, but he still refused. However, Pacino does have three children from his relationships – and the daughter of his ex, Argentinian actress Lucila Polak, calls him her stepfather.

28. Adrien Brody

Actor Adrien Brody has been romantically linked to a lot of famous women including Tori Amos and January Jones. At one point, things seemed to be getting serious with Spanish actress Elsa Pataky – he even bought her a New York farm designed to look like a castle for her birthday. But the relationship didn’t last, and Brody remains unmarried.

27. Robin Roberts

In 2013 Robin Roberts of Good Morning America came out as a lesbian and announced that she was in a long-term relationship with a woman called Amber Laign. After that, tabloid magazines suggested that the two of them would get married – but although they’re still together, they’ve yet to tie the knot.

26. John Cusack

John Cusack has dated an impressive selection of Hollywood women, including Minnie Driver, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Uma Thurman. But he doesn’t want to settle down. In 2009, Elle magazine posed the question, “In five words or fewer, tell me why you’ve never married,” and he answered, “I can do it in seven: ‘Society doesn’t tell me what to do.’”

25. Matthew Perry

In Friends, Matthew Perry’s character, Chandler, ended up happily married to Courteney Cox’s Monica. But in real life, he’s never married. He has however been romantically involved with a lot of women, including Julia Roberts, Yasmine Bleeth, Lauren Graham and Lizzy Caplan. Rumor also has it that he was really in love with Cox on the Friends set too.

24. Miranda Richardson

Miranda Richardson played Queen Elizabeth I in the famous British sitcom Blackadder II, and just like the Virgin Queen, she too has never married. In 2009 she told The Daily Mail, “I think marriage would be quite good for me, but I’m not going to just go out and hire someone. I think, intermittently, that you find Mr Right, but you have to get lucky.”

23. Seth MacFarlane

The creator of Family Guy has never wed, but he’s not against it. In 2013 he told Parade magazine, “I’m wide open to getting married, but actors are not easy people to date. You end up sharing that person with this other mistress that is their career. I very much like the traditional courtship method of making a date. That’s what they do in normal places, but Hollywood’s not normal.”

22. Simon Cowell

In 2013 Cowell began dating New York socialite Lauren Silverman – which might have gone without comment had she not been married to one of Cowell’s friends at the time. In the end the Silvermans divorced and Lauren gave birth to Cowell’s child. But whenever he’s asked if he’ll actually marry her, there’s no answer.

Dana Delaney may have starred in Desperate Housewives but she doesn’t actually want to be one. In 2008 she told the Daily Mail, “I’ve had proposals, but I like being single so much that somebody would have to be special to make me marry him… But marriage never seemed that important to me, which I think was part of growing up in the 70s.”

20. Billy Crudup

The actor’s personal life has always been a bit turbulent. In 2003, Crudup left a pregnant Mary-Louise Parker and started to date co-star Claire Danes. He received a vast amount of backlash, and their relationship ended up only lasting three years. Now he’s the partner of Naomi Watts, but no marriage yet.

19. Wilt Chamberlain

Wilt Chamberlain is considered one of the greatest basketball player ever – and he once claimed that he’d slept with 20,000 women. However, he might have regretted his unmarried playboy lifestyle eventually. Before his death in 1999, he told anchor Al Meltzer, “With all of you men out there who think that having a thousand different ladies is pretty cool, I have learned in my life I’ve found out that having one woman a thousand different times is much more satisfying.”

18. Benicio del Toro

Benicio del Toro’s most notable relationship has been with TV personality – and daughter of Rod – Kimberly Stewart, and it’s been a complicated one. In 2011 the actor’s rep announced that they were expecting a child, but not in a relationship. At the time an anonymous source told Closer magazine, “When she ended up pregnant, Benicio said he wouldn’t marry her and didn’t want a relationship – but he’d support the baby.”

17. Lauren Graham

For a decade now actress Lauren Graham has been in a committed relationship with her Caroline in the City and Parenthood co-star Peter Krause. It seems she’s simply not interested in the paperwork aspect of it all, though. In 2014, appearing on The Ellen Show, she said, “Aren’t we married already?”

16. Kristin Davis

Kristin Davis’ Sex and the City character Charlotte dearly wanted to get married, but Davis herself has other priorities. In 2008 she told the Early Show, “Little girls who say, ‘I want to get married’ – I was never one of those little girls. It is not that I wouldn’t, but I don’t see that I must do it or be unhappy.”

15. Shonda Rhimes

Writer and producer Shonda Rhimes told Oprah in 2015 that she probably won’t ever become someone’s spouse. The Grey’s Anatomy creator explained, “I have never wanted to get married. I never played bride. I was never interested. I don’t know what it is… There may be some people who are doing it and who are very happy and who love it. And I am not knocking any of you.”

14. Diane Keaton

In 2019, in an interview with French news agency AFP, the 68-year-old actress reflected on how she’d remained unmarried. Keaton said, “I wonder if I’m the only single woman of my age who’s been in film who hasn’t gotten married, so I might be a freak.” She went on, “Maybe I did miss out on something – but then, nobody can have everything, right?”

13. Marisa Tomei

Marisa Tomei doesn’t think either marriage or parenthood is for her. In 2009 she told Manhattan magazine, “I’m not that big a fan of marriage as an institution, and I don’t know why women need to have children to be seen as complete human beings.” Later, a rumor circulated that she was engaged to her then-boyfriend, actor Logan Marshall-Green… but it transpired not to be true.

12. Queen Latifah

Queen Latifah has been in a long-term relationship with choreographer Eboni Nichols since 2013 – and has a baby with her. Tabloids have reported before that the two are engaged, but no one has ever confirmed this. Maybe it will happen, and maybe it won’t – in the meantime, all parties involved seem to just be enjoying life just fine.

11. Jon Hamm

In 1997 Jon Hamm began a longterm relationship with actress and writer-director, Jennifer Westfeldt, but he didn’t necessarily want to marry her. In 2008 he told Page Six magazine, “We may not have a piece of paper that says we’re husband and wife, but after 10 years, Jennifer is more than just a girlfriend. What we have is much deeper and we both know that.” Alas, they split in 2015.

10. Kourtney Kardashian

For a long time, Kourtney Kardashian dated TV personality and entrepreneur Scott Disick. They came close to marrying… but didn’t. In 2011, for the reality show Kourtney and Kim Take New York, Disick asked Kardashian her thoughts on marriage and she said, “If things are so good now…why would we want to change that?” Disick had been preparing a proposal which then didn’t take place.

9. Helena Bonham Carter

Helena Bonham Carter has had a fascinating romantic history. She famously was one side of a love triangle that also involved Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson. Branagh met Carter during the production of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. She split with Branagh after five years and moved on to director Tim Burton, only for that relationship to end in 2014. But throughout it all, she’s never actually married anyone.

8. Owen Wilson

Actor Owen Wilson has never been married, but arguably his life is complicated enough already. He has three young children by three different women: Jade Duell, Caroline Lindqvist and Varunie Vongsvirates. And Vongsvirates has claimed that Wilson has never even met the daughter he fathered with her.

7. Winona Ryder

In 2018 Winona Ryder claimed that she and Keanu Reeves got married for real during their wedding scene in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, as an actual priest was present. However, no paperwork was ever filled out, so it remains strictly unofficial, even though Ryder calls Reeves “husband.” To make things even more complicated, she’s also been in a relationship with fashion designer Scott Mackinlay Hahn since 2011.

5. Greta Garbo

Greta Garbo came very close to getting hitched – in 1927, she actually left her would-be husband, fellow actor John Gilbert, at the altar. Years later, in 1955, the Hollywood legend told Time magazine, “If I could find the right person to share my life with, I would. If you are blessed, you are blessed, whether you are single or married.”

4. Naomi Watts

When Naomi Watts first began her relationship with fellow actor Liev Schreiber, she wasn’t sure if they’d ever get married. She told Marie Claire in 2009, “It’s not like I’ve grown up having this dream of a fairy-tale wedding… He and I have a family. We’re very much together. We just don’t have that certificate, and that’s okay with both of us.” They split in 2016.

3. Charlize Theron

In 2019 Charlize Theron told Glamour magazine that she couldn’t see herself ever getting married. The actress explained, “I haven’t been in a relationship for a very long time. I never wanted to get married. Those are things that are not hard for me, because they’re innately my truth.” She also said people found that hard to accept.

1. Oprah Winfrey

Oprah has always been firm on the subject of marriage. In 2020 Winfrey wrote an essay for O magazine about why she never wed her partner Stedman Graham. She said, “I realized I didn’t actually want a marriage. I wanted to be asked… I didn’t want the sacrifices, the compromises, the day-in-day-out commitment required to make a marriage work.”
