20 Celebrities Who Confessed All About Their Experiences Using Online Dating Apps

Getting a date in the 21st century often means getting online. But not if you’re a celebrity, right? Wrong. It appears that dating apps such as Raya, Tinder and Bumble are awash with famous faces just looking to find a little romance. Here are 20 well-known names who have dipped their toes in the world of online dating.

20. Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore burst onto the scene as a child star in E.T. The Extra Terrestrial. Unsurprisingly, it then proved hard for the actor to live a life like the rest of us. “I’ve always wanted to go on a blind date, but my life got in the way of that,” Barrymore said on TV show Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. For the star of movies such as 50 First Dates and Charlie’s Angels, online dating provided a way to scratch that particular itch.

Sadly, for Barrymore, things didn’t work out as planned when she joined Raya. “I did terribly too,” she told Cohen. “I got stood up, and I didn’t match with anyone. And my friends gave me this sort of bloated sense of false confidence. They were like, ‘You should try it. You will do great.’ It was a car wreck,” the star added.

19. Ben Affleck

Even bona fide Hollywood superstars have been known to look for a little love online. Pearl Harbor actor Ben Affleck is one famous example, despite having dated or been married to a bevy of beauties in the shape of Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Garner. His marriage to Garner ended in 2018.

Embracing singledom, reports surfaced that Affleck had turned to well-known celebrity dating site Raya. The director and star of Argo soon confirmed it was true. “Ha, you got me. I’m dating,” the actor wrote on his Instagram account. We’re not sure how it went for Affleck, but he’s now said to be dating fellow actor Ana de Armas who he met the old-fashioned way while filming their movie Deep Water.

18. Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer is hilarious. The stand-up star and actor has brought audiences to tears – in a good way – with her performances in movies such as Trainwreck. And if a good sense of humor is as important as people usually say it is in terms of attraction, Schumer surely never had any problems meeting prospective love interests. In fact, she’s now married to Chris Fischer.

But when she was single, Schumer admitted using dating apps. In an interview with radio D.J. Howard Stern, Schumer candidly revealed how her former partner Ben Hanisch was actually the first person with whom she matched on Raya. And she also let on what it was that had attracted her to Hanisch from his profile. “The picture was him dancing with his grandma at, like, a wedding. It was really cute,” she said.

17. Channing Tatum

Channing Tatum is one of the hottest men in Hollywood. The actor is never shy about revealing his toned body either: witness his memorable performance in Magic Mike. Tatum would be a dream catch for many a person, but that didn’t stop the star turning to an online dating site in his time of need.

Tatum was once on high-profile site Raya. And according to Us Weekly magazine, the actor even revealed his saucy past on the app. “And yes, I used to be a stripper. Sorry,” Tatum’s profile read. The publication also reported that the star’s profile song was none other than D’Angelo’s “Brown Sugar”. Nice choice Channing.

16. Joe Jonas

Singer Joe Jonas has long been a pin-up. And the star is now happily married to Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner. But once upon a time one of the Jonas Brothers was spotted on the online dating app of choice for the rich and famous: Raya. That’s according to gossip website Page Six.

There is further evidence to suggest that Jonas was once active on Raya. And that comes in the shape of singer Charli XCX. The performer famously recruited stars to appear in her music video for the hit song “Boys” by snaring them on Raya. And alongside the likes of Mark Ronson and Riz Ahmed was – yes, you’ve guessed it – Jonas. He may or may not have got any dates on Raya, but at least he got some work out of it.

15. Niall Horan

Irish crooner Niall Horan has been making fans go weak at the knees with his good looks and talent since he was a member of highly successful pop group One Direction. Surely if there was one man who never needed a dating app to get some interest it was Horan, right? Well, actually, that’s not been the case.

Horan famously dated fellow celeb Hailee Steinfeld for well over a year. But when that relationship ended, the “Slow Hands” singer was said to have joined the ranks of romance-seeking stars on Raya. Who knows if Horan found any success on the site? Perhaps he was just keeping his options open.

14. Lindsay Lohan

Wildchild actor Lindsay Lohan could write a book about her misadventures. Yet the star of movies including Mean Girls and Freaky Friday is another celebrity who has dabbled with online dating sites in her search for love. Lohan has been linked with a number of high-profile stars down the years, including singer Aaron Carter and D.J. Samantha Ronson.

Certainly any information about Lohan’s activities online couldn’t be complete without one particular Tinder anecdote. The actor once posted to Instagram about how she had bumped into a member of her own family on the popular dating app. “Look who I just found on @tinderapp … Hey bro,” Lohan wrote, of course referring to her own sibling. Proof that everyone’s doing it, surely?

13. Sam Smith

If you had a voice like Sam Smith, I’m sure you’d feel pretty confident about attracting a partner. But there are many reasons why people choose to use dating sites, and we’re sure Smith has his own. Smith was actually kicked off U.K. dating site Hinge because they thought he was bogus. “They chucked me off of it after one night cause they thought I was a catfish pretending to be me,” Smith revealed during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen .

But the fact that Smith is now using dating sites is quite a turnaround for the star. “No offense to people who go on Tinder, but I just feel like it’s ruining romance, I really do,” he once told U.K. newspaper Metro back in 2014. “We’re losing the art of conversation and being able to go and speak to people, and you’re swiping people,” Smith added. The singer clearly had a change of heart in this case.

12. Zac Efron

Now, be honest. You must be more than a little shocked to discover heartthrob Zac Efron has ever even considered using a dating service. But believe it or not, the hunk who graced High School Musical and The Greatest Showman is just one of millions who have signed up to what is quite possibly the world’s favorite dating app: Tinder.

Sadly for Efron, his Tinder adventure didn’t go too well, as he told British newspaper The Times in 2016. “Amazingly, when I signed up for Tinder, nobody swiped me!” the actor admitted. “They thought [the profile] was fake,” Efron revealed. Perhaps now they know it’s really you, Zac, you can give it another go?

11. Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox is best known to audiences for her role in the series Orange Is the New Black in which she played prisoner Sophia Burset. But far from wanting to be forever remembered as an inmate, Cox labeled herself a “Tinder girl” in a revealing interview with TV show Access Hollywood. This is one star who is completely comfortable with her use of dating apps.

In that Access Hollywood interview, Cox was keen to explain why she is such a fan of putting herself out there online. “Honestly, I’m a Tinder girl. When I broke up with my ex, I went back on Tinder, because I feel like if you want to date, you have to be on the apps,” Cox said. “You have to be on the apps to be in the game,” she reasoned.

10. Martha Stewart

Online dating is far from just a young person’s game. Veteran TV star Martha Stewart was flying the flag for the older generation when she hopped onto Match.com for a bit of an adventure. In fact, Stewart was somewhat of a celeb pioneer in that respect, as she was looking for love online as far back as 2013.

On an appearance on TV news show Today Stewart candidly spoke about her online search. “I’ve always been a big believer that technology, if used well, can enhance one’s life,” Stewart said. “So here I am, looking to enhance my dating life,” she added. We are happy to report that it was a nice experience for the star too. “It broke the ice. This got me to sort of think about dating as a nice thing to do on a regular basis,” she said on the show.

9. Katy Perry

“Firework” singer Katy Perry is known for her confident sexuality and so it probably comes as little surprise that the star has been known to use dating sites. What isn’t clear is if that was how she met any of her famous beaus, from Russell Brand – to whom the singer was married – to fellow musician John Mayer.

Once, when asked if she was a Tinder user, Perry was pretty clear on the subject. “Uh, yes, I am, hello,” said Perry in 2014 when asked if she was on the app. “I’m really deep on Tinder, so I don’t have a whole lot of time,” she said during an interview with radio station Power 105.1.

8. Khloé Kardashian

Khloé Kardashian is one of the famous TV dynasty, of course. And she is also a celebrity who has been known to partake in a little internet dating. Kardashian has been linked with plenty of eligible bachelors in the past, including NBA stars James Harden and Tristan Thompson. But that hasn’t stopped her setting up an OkCupid profile, with a little help from a friend.

“I’ve never done online dating before,” Kardashian told People magazine, “but just for... giggles, [my best friend] Malika and I decided to fill one out. It was actually really fun to do, LOL!” We are left to wonder whether she had any success online, but at least the youngest Kardashian sister seemed to enjoy the experience.

7. Chace Crawford

Chace Crawford is an actor that will be familiar to most for playing the role of Nate Archibald in the immensely popular TV series Gossip Girl. That part undoubtedly made Crawford one of the most eligible bachelors in Hollywood, so it’s something of a surprise to find out the star resorted to online dating to find love.

Crawford spoke about his online habit with Now, a British magazine. “I was chatting to a friend about speed dating and [Jewish dating site] JDate.com – and I’m not even Jewish,” Crawford said in the interview. “I have a bunch of different accounts that no one even knows about,” the actor added. Well, we do now, Chase!

6. Luann de Lesseps

In the rarified air of the rich and famous, there are even some examples of celebrity relationships that began with a chance encounter on a dating app. That’s the case with Luann de Lesseps of Real Housewives of New York fame. The TV star met her current love interest Garth Wakeford, a trainer, on an online dating site.

De Lesseps spoke about her new relationship on the Ex Appeal podcast. “Oh, he is too good to be true,” was the star’s reaction when she first saw Wakeford’s profile. Happily for de Lesseps he wasn’t, as a subsequent meeting proved Wakeford to be everything his profile promised. “I said, ‘Oh, my God! He’s exactly what he looks like on the app.’ He’s tall, he’s handsome, he looks like a Viking,” de Lesseps revealed.

5. Lizzo

“Juice” singer Lizzo is one of the world’s best-loved musical artists right now. Adored by many, surely this is one celeb who wouldn’t need digital assistance to find a bit of romance? But it seems even this entertainer likes a bit of online searching to help her find a love match. “I’ve done Raya. I tried to match with John Mayer – it didn’t work,” Lizzo commented on TV talk show Busy Tonight.

Lizzo was also pretty revealing about why she chose to go on a particular dating app. “My dancer wanted to have a hoe phase, so I decided to join her, and I went on one of the, you know, lower-echelon dating apps,” Lizzo said. “No shade, but you don't have to get confirmed… So I hopped on it and I had a hoe phase for like a week and it was really fun,” the star added, rather teasingly.

4. Rebel Wilson

Rebel Wilson is a much-loved comic actor but is another Hollywood star who has tried her hand at online dating apps to find love. The star of movies including Hustle, Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect is one of a host of celebs who have turned to exclusive dating app Raya for a little bit of help in the romance department. “I’ve been on it a few years, but I’m only active for a week or two,” Wilson told People.

Wilson spoke about her own experiences, but she admitted she was far from alone in the celeb world in using technology to help find a love match. “When you’re seeing somebody, you’re not on it [a dating app]. It’s only for the times in between when you’re very much single,” the star added in the People interview. “And just looking for who’s out there. But I think it’s a really good tool and a lot of the Pitch Perfect girls are on it, and a lot of my girlfriends in the industry are on it,” Wilson concluded.

3. Hilary Duff

Actor and singer Hilary Duff is a star who had no qualms in mixing her personal and professional lives when it came to Tinder. The app was actually featured in the video to Duff’s song “Sparks”, as were some of the real-life matches she had made on the well-known online dating site.

Duff told radio interviewer Ryan Seacrest all about the experience. “It kind of started out to be a joke with my girlfriends. I was like, ‘Explain this whole thing to me because it’s kind of blowing my mind,’” the performer explained. “In my life, I’ve always had really serious boyfriends, I’ve always met people through work, and I’ve never been on a blind date,” Duff added.

2. Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone is a Hollywood legend who has had her fair share of admirers over the years. The star, who is now in her 60s, has portrayed some of the big screen’s most memorably seductive characters in movies such as Basic Instinct and Sliver. But it seems even a sex symbol like Stone is not averse to using the web so find a potential love match.

Still, even a Hollywood heavyweight can get blocked, as Stone found out with dating app Bumble. She even tweeted about it. “I went on the @bumble dating sight and they closed my account. Some users reported that it couldn’t possibly be me! Hey @bumble, is being me exclusionary? Don’t shut me out of the hive,” the actor wrote. It seems many users thought her profile was a fake. But you’ll be pleased to know Bumble soon cleared Stone to swipe at will.

1. Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato is currently one of pop’s most talked-about stars. Yet that still hasn’t stopped the singer from venturing into the world of online love matching. Lovato spoke about how she had been on Raya, but then deleted her account when she got into a relationship. Yet the relationship didn’t work out, so Lovato went back to on – only to find that she had seemingly been blocked.

Lovato opened up about her experience in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar magazine. “I just deleted it out of respect to the person I was with, then we broke up and I went to get back on,” the singer admitted, only to find out that she now couldn’t. But it wasn’t the end of the world. “And I was like, ‘You know what? It’s fine. I don’t need to be on this because I think I’m supposed to be alone right now,’” the singer added.
