Rupert Grint And His Girlfriend Dropped A Major Bombshell About Their Future

Rupert Grint is beloved to a lot of people for one very simple reason: he played a major role in the Harry Potter movies. To be precise, he portrayed Ron Weasley, a close pal of the titular character. And though the Harry Potter film series ended in 2011, there’s still a lot of interest in Grint. So when he announced some exciting news, it made headlines.

Grint’s romantic life has long been of interest to Harry Potter fans as well. During the course of the film series, he was linked to several famous British women. Among them were singer Lily Allen, whom he reportedly first encountered at a screening of Order of the Phoenix, and Cherrybomb actress Kimberley Nixon, although both parties rebuffed the rumors.

But ever since 2011 Grint has been in a relationship with actress Georgia Groome, who’s probably most famous for the 2008 rom-com Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging. The couple are very, very private, however. So they haven’t spoken much about their romance and are rarely even photographed together.

Indeed, it took until November 2018 for the wider world to even know they were seeing each other. That month, someone posted a picture of them on Twitter – and it went viral. Above the old-looking photograph, they wrote, “I was today years old when I found out Georgia from Angus, thongs and perfect snogging has been going out with Ron Weasley since 2011????”

As far as a lot of people knew, though, Grint was very much playing the field. After all, in 2009 he told the Daily Mail newspaper, “I’ve never been seriously involved with anyone. I’ve certainly never been in love. I’ve always preferred to keep things casual. I’m not seeing anyone now and I don’t feel the need to have a girlfriend.”

And in that same interview, the young actor went on to say, “It’s not that I find it hard to meet girls – they do come and chat me up from time to time. Sometimes I’m interested. I tend not to go for the very pretty ones. I prefer the quirkier types, the ones who are a little weird. But when it comes to girls, I’m quite insecure.”

Lots of people expressed shock that the Grint-Groome relationship had been going on for so long with so few people knowing about it. Nonetheless, it had popped up before in the tabloids. For instance, back in April 2011 Dean Piper wrote in the Daily Mirror newspaper, “I spied Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, AKA Ron Weasley, holding hands with Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging actress Georgia Groome at The Wheelbarrow pub in Camden on Thursday.”

According to the article in question, the event Grint and Groome were present at was practically a Potter double-date. That’s because Bonnie Wright, who’d played Grint’s onscreen sister Ginny Weasley in the franchise, was also there with her own significant other, Jamie Campbell Bower. The latter portrayed Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.

Unfortunately, though, the relationship between Wright and Bower didn’t last in the end. They became engaged in 2011, just around the same time Grint and Groome started going out. But in 2012 news hit that the wedding had been called off. An anonymous source informed Us Weekly magazine, “It was amicable, but things had not been going right for some time.”

Nonetheless, Grint and Groome seemed like they were going the distance. In December 2018 an interview with Grint was published in The Guardian newspaper, and it saw the actor speculating about what the future held for him, as well as the possibility of children. Turning 30 years old, he said, “felt strange.”

“I’m just going to go with the flow, keep playing interesting characters and see what happens,” Grint mused. “I’d like to settle down and have kids soon. If I had a son, would I call him Ron? It’s quite a good name, but probably not. And Grint’s a tough name to pair a one-syllable first name with.”

In the same interview, Grint also talked about life as a child star. “There were definitely times when I thought about leaving,” he admitted. “Filming Harry Potter was a massive sacrifice – working from such a young age for such long periods. And I definitely remember thinking during one extended break, ‘This whole thing is so all-consuming, do I really want to go back? Maybe it’s just not for me.’ I guess I was probably just being a teenager.”

“As I got older, I could feel this growing narrative willing me to get engulfed in some big scandal off-screen,” the actor continued. “It felt like people were waiting for me to go off the rails, but it was never going to happen. We filmed the whole thing in this very intense bubble in Watford not Hollywood, so we didn’t have the chance to discover drugs, or anything like that.”

Groome, who of course comes from a celebrity background as well, has also talked about life as a teen in the spotlight. In 2008 the then 16-year-old told the website IndieLondon, “I think you grow up on every shoot you do… You’re working with adults, and you’re sort of expected to be older. And that’s how I like to put myself across.”

In another December 2018 interview, Grint let a further tidbit slip about his relationship. When Radio Times asked him about his love life, the actor said he preferred to date other celebrities as they “have that kind of understanding. It definitely helps. It’s not like being in One Direction, but there’s always something, every day, even with my hat on. It’s never calmed down.”

Grint also again brought up the problems of being a young star. “I often feel like people were waiting for it to happen. They were ready for us to step out of line,” he said. “It didn’t come to that for us. I guess having a really good, strong family had something to do with it. But, yes, at times you definitely felt like it was thin ice.”

And according to Groome’s Twitter account, she had an even rougher time of it being a child actor, despite not being in the public eye as much as Grint. In October 2017 she wrote alongside the #metoo hashtag, “When a sex scene was written in on the morning of my sixteenth birthday with a man +10 years older than me (because I was now three hours legal).”

In a series of tweets, Groome added, “I hope this industry continues to push for safer and fairer environments for women. At 25 I am no longer scared to say ‘No/That’s unnecessary/Get Lost’ when asked to do things I’m not comfortable with. But when I was younger… it was scary and hard to have a voice/control.”

It’s clear Grint and Groome have plenty in common, then. Another experience they share is that of having to field questions about their fictional romances. In Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging, Groome starred opposite Aaron Johnson, who grew up to be Avengers star Aaron Taylor-Johnson. He was a teenage heartthrob.

In her interview with IndieLondon, Groome was probed about the kissing scenes in the film. “People have asked whether my kiss with [Johnson] was really romantic,” she recalled. “But it really wasn’t when you have the camera this far away from your face.” She mimed one being right next to her.

Moreover, Grint was asked exactly the same things about his kiss with Emma Watson in the Harry Potter series. When People magazine brought it up with him in 2016, he said, “I’ve known Emma since she was literally nine years old, and we had this very brother-sister relationship. And it just felt very surreal.”

“I have a memory of [Watson’s] face getting closer and closer. Like, ‘Oh my God,’” the young actor continued. “I can’t really remember anything apart from that.” Then, he somewhat pointedly added, “One take was enough. It was such a huge moment, and there was so much expectation. Quite a lot of pressure, actually.”

Despite both actors clearly not liking some aspects of fame, their relationship was nonetheless thrust into the spotlight again in 2019. During April of that year, the paparazzi snapped some pictures of the young couple with their friends in London – and it was noted that Groome was sporting a ring.

Not only that, but Grint also had on a ring as well. So, had the pair married and simply not told the press? There was a flurry of speculation, but soon it transpired that, no, there had apparently been no wedding. Grint sporting the ring on the wrong hand was the first clue, and then a spokesperson told the media that nothing had happened.

But then, not too long after that, in April 2020 some more news hit. And this piece of information was arguably even more exciting than a wedding. A representative for the couple informed People magazine, “Rupert Grint and Georgia Groome are excited to announce they are expecting a baby and would please ask for privacy at this time.”

And once the news had broken, there was an outpouring of delight on social media, especially from people who’d grown up with the Harry Potter series. “Aw Rupert Grint’s gonna be a dad, super cute; hands down the nicest big name celebrity I’ve ever met! Congratulations to him and Georgia!” a fan wrote.

People made plenty of joyful references to the series that made Grint famous as well. Another well-wisher wrote, “Imagine Rupert Grint not telling his kid he was in Harry Potter and having his kid read the books and all, when he shows the movie for the first time his kid FREAKS OUT and is like ‘HOLY **** DAD YOU’RE RON WEASLEY.’”

And others made note of what Grint had been up to after the Potter series ended. A congratulatory tweet read, “Friendly reminder that Rupert Grint used his Harry Potter cash to buy an ice cream truck, which he drives around to hand out free ice cream. He’s gonna be such a great dad.”

Moreover, Rupert Grint is the first of the main Harry Potter trio to become a parent. Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson as of yet have no kids – although they’ve certainly been asked about the subject often enough. For example, in 2019 Radcliffe told the website StarLifestyle, “At some point, not immediately, but in a few years from now, I’ll probably be thinking about starting a family.”

Radcliffe then went on to discuss how he’d introduce a future child to the Potter franchise, saying, “I’ll make sure they read the book first before they start watching their dad in the films. I’d like to think they’ll watch the films when I’m older. Or there’s a chance that somebody would’ve remade the films by then and there’s a whole new Harry Potter to watch.”

Emma Watson’s romantic status is also often discussed in the media, but she seems to prefer being without a significant other. In November 2019 the then almost 30-year-old actress told British Vogue magazine, “It took me a long time, but I’m very happy [being single]. I call it being self-partnered.”

Neither of the other two Harry Potter actors have spoken to the media about Grint’s impending fatherhood yet. Nonetheless, it might be safe to assume they’ll have spoken in private. Even though the series that made them all famous is long since over, the three young adults are apparently still good friends.

In 2019 Radcliffe appeared on a Wired’s The Web’s Most Searched Questions video and said, “All the young cast got on really, really well on the films. There’s always going to be a recognition that only really the three of us have been through that very specific thing and I think that’s gonna join us forever.”

And prior to that, Emma Watson let slip that the whole Potter cast had a group chat. In 2017 she informed Entertainment Tonight she used WhatsApp and “invited everyone” to watch her new film Beauty and the Beast. Watson said, “Everyone has been very supportive, and I’m very supported by my old co-stars.”

So, the lucky child of Grint and Groome may well have a built-in Harry Potter family to grow up with. And they’ll be fortunate in other respects as well. Thanks to the overwhelming success of the franchise he starred in, Grint is now a very rich man. Indeed, his net worth is reportedly a whopping $50 million.

In December 2018 Grint spoke to Radio Times magazine about money, and said, “I actually don’t know how much I have. I couldn’t even really guess. It doesn’t really motivate me too much. It makes you comfortable; that’s the good thing about it, I think. I’m glad it’s there, but I’m not really that focused on it.”

Grint used some of his money to purchase an ice-cream truck, of course… but he used a larger portion of it to set himself up for life with a truly spectacular house. His home, which dates from the 1700s, reportedly cost more than $6 million and has two swimming pools.

Not only that, but the young actor purchased another huge mansion for his mom and dad – his future child’s grandparents – as well. This one has its own putting green and lake, and it cost Grint at least $4.15 million to buy. The Grint-Groome baby is almost certainly going to grow up in the lap of luxury.

Nonetheless, Grint hasn’t forgotten what it takes to bring a child into the world in the first place. In April 2020 he appeared on the One World: Together at Home show and told a midwife he met, “Hearing your story is just insane. The sacrifices that you make are truly inspiring. It’s very Gryffindor behavior. Thank you so much.”

It seems likely that neither Grint nor Groome will be sharing many details about the pregnancy, but it will certainly make headlines when the baby is born. Harry Potter fans will no doubt be delighted to hear the news – and probably even more so if the actor really does decide to name him “Ron.”
