20 Times You Might Have Noticed Jill Duggar Stealing The Spotlight From Her Mom

As the matriarch of her large and devout Baptist family, Michelle Duggar was undoubtedly the biggest star of TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting. But over the years many of her 19 children have come to the forefront – and none more so than her second eldest daughter. Here’s a look at why you’re now more likely to find Jill Duggar in the headlines than her mom.

20. The apparent family feud

In the summer of 2019 the Duggars headed to Los Angeles to visit daughter Jinger and her husband Jeremy Vuolo. The couple had decided to relocate so that Jeremy could complete his degree studies at a California divinity school. Although rumors surfaced that the Duggars were miffed about the situation due to the area’s more liberal ways, most of them embarked on the journey.

Jill, however, was nowhere to be seen. Indeed, while her family was enjoying the Golden State, the TV personality was pictured on Instagram partying with some neighbors. This led many to believe that there was still bad blood between her husband and the rest of the Duggars. You see, Derick Dillard had been kicked off spin-off Counting On in 2017 for controversial remarks he made.

19. The firing denials

“What an oxymoron. A ‘reality’ show which follows a non-reality. ‘Transgender’ is a myth. Gender is not fluid. It’s ordained by God.” These were the provocative comments Derick made about I Am Jazz star Jazz Jennings that reportedly got him and wife Jill kicked off Counting On. However, Derick argues that the couple weren’t fired at all and, in fact, chose to leave of their own accord.

Derick claims that he and Jill decided to walk away from the show due to a contract dispute. The star alleges that the deal they signed with the TLC network was a “bogus” one which prevented them from conducting their missionary work. Derick claimed all this on Twitter in response to a follower’s question – but he hastily deleted them soon after.

18. Her insensitive Instagram pic

“Today has been a really hard day as I watched a couple do what no one should ever have to do… bury their little baby.” That’s how Jill began one particular Instagram post after attending a heartbreaking funeral. And while there was arguably nothing wrong with this sentiment, her followers took umbrage with its accompanying photo.

Jill had uploaded an image of a small casket adorned with flowers alongside her message and an appropriate hymn. One dismayed follower remarked, “Not everything has to be an Instagram post, even with the purest intentions. This is insanely tacky of you to post.” Another commented, “It’s certainly not appropriate to post stuff like this unless given permission.”

17. Her social media faux pas

Jill may only be in her late 20s, but her social media etiquette has more in common with a much older generation. The star can’t seem to get enough of the whole emoji craze whenever she takes to Instagram or Twitter. But unfortunately, she often uses them in the most inappropriate manner.

The relatively lighthearted sobbing emoji appears to be a particular favorite of Jill’s. And yet she often uses it when commenting on sensitive situations, most notably when someone has died. And this can’t be put down to her upbringing. Indeed, most of her siblings appear to have gotten to grips with social media without making the same faux pas.

16. Her venting videos

Jill certainly isn’t afraid to show that raising a family can be tough, frustrating and often completely exhausting. In October 2019 she uploaded a video after a particularly hard day when her kids appeared to have run riot. Indeed, she showed the scribbles they’d made upon the walls, the chocolate sauce they’d spread around the kitchen and the soap they’d left on the floor of their bathroom.

“This is me frustrated,” Jill opened the video with. “[My son] is screaming at me because he wants a game. I just told them to go lay down or go outside until mommy can cool down and handle this situation.” Jill admitted in the caption that she just needed to let off some steam, but her vent nonetheless made headlines.

15. Her shopping trips

Nothing is straightforward in the Jill Duggar household. Even a simple supermarket trip can end up causing drama, which the star will inevitably document on her social media. In one particular Instagram post, Jill told her followers that she’d injured herself after her shin collided with her shopping cart as she wheeled her kids around the aisles.

Jill claims she tried to remain “calm and collected” during the incident, despite the fact she was in some pain. The star claimed her shin had been left bruised – though her cameraphone failed to pick up anything noticeable. “The video doesn’t do it justice,” she added in her defense.

14. Derick’s shade at Josh

Of course, Jill also has a partner in crime when it comes to taking the limelight away from her mother. Her husband Derick has no qualms about telling it like it is. And with one particular retweet, he appeared to be throwing some major shade at Jill’s older brother. For Josh Duggar had found himself engulfed in a sex scandal a few years previously.

“In a big family, the first child is kind of like the first pancake – if it’s not perfect, that’s okay, there are a lot more coming along.” That’s an alleged quote from Antonin Scalia, the ex-Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, that Derick decided to retweet. Many of his followers believe that this was aimed squarely at the eldest Duggar child.

13. The vaccinations

You might not think that the simple act of getting a flu shot would create an online furore. But that’s exactly what happened when Jill’s husband Derick revealed that he and his family ensure they have regular vaccinations. “Go out and get yours if you haven’t yet, and try to stay healthy this year,” Derick advised, alongside an image of his band-aided arm.

Derick also admitted that he had approximately a dozen additional vaccinations during his early adulthood when he relocated to Asia. Yet these revelations appeared to shock some of his followers. One commented, “Please do your research. They’re pure poison.” Another remarked, “God already gave you the immunity to fight flu.”

12. Jill’s new BFF

After moving to a new neighborhood, Jill managed to make friends with a number of similarly young mothers. But one in particular appears to be causing concern among her fans. Indeed, Jill has developed a strong connection with Rachel Virden, a consultant for a skincare company. And some believe that Rachel is cashing in on her new-found BFF.

Jill regularly posts photos of her and Rachel’s hangouts, whether they’re attending an event or simply going for a walk. However, these are always accompanied by a hashtag promoting her friend’s business. Some of Jill’s followers have expressed distaste for how their friendship appears to have become something of a marketing tool.

11. The domestic abuse plea

In contrast to her family’s till-death-us-do-part views, Jill believes that women in abusive marriages should unquestionably leave their husbands. In an Instagram post, the star lent her support to a friend who’d just walked away from a violent relationship. And she implored any of her followers who found themselves in situations to do the same.

Writing on the social media platform, Jill remarked, “Did you know one in three women and one in four men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner? This includes a range of behaviors (e.g. slapping, shoving, pushing)… Don’t turn a blind eye! Support those who need help around you!”

10. The grandmother tribute

Grandma Mary Duggar sadly lost her life aged 78 in the summer of 2019. As you’d expect, many of her grandchildren took to Instagram to pay their respects. However, not everyone appreciated how they expressed their sorrow. And Jill got it in the neck perhaps more than any of her siblings.

In a piece titled “A Life Well Lived: Lessons My Grandma Taught Me,” Jill spoke fondly of the times she shared with Mary. However, she was criticized for the fact she wrote such a post within 24 hours of her grandmother’s passing. And many of her followers also remarked negatively about the relatively jovial nature of Jill’s words.

9. Her parenting skills

Jill’s parenting skills have often been called into question by those who follow her every move on social media. In August 2019 she was criticized when she revealed that she’d let son Israel eat the chewing gum that he’d previously stuck in his mother’s hair. Indeed, although Jill found the situation humorous, she appeared to be alone in this matter.

One particularly enraged fan commented, “That made me feel sick. Why do they let a child that age chew gum???” Another posted, “According to doctors it’s fine to chew at four, but from someone’s hair? That’s next level. Next he’ll be taking chewed gum off from under a random table and eating it. Also she might really need a haircut if they couldn’t find it…”

8. Her children’s diet

Jill has regularly come under fire for the meals that she cooks for her children. These are inspired by low-budget – if not necessarily low-calorie – dishes that she used to eat while growing up with her siblings. But unfortunately for Jill, not all of her Instagram followers approve of her culinary skills.

“Looks very high in fat, high cholesterol, and also high in carbs,” one person wrote in response to a photo of Jill’s broccoli rice casserole. And after the star followed a recipe which contained two cans of mushroom soup, another piped up, “I’m continuously surprised how much processed food your family promotes.” And then there’s the anti-sloppy joe follower who posted, “Imagine thinking adding tomato and BBQ sauce [and] a packet of flavoring is a recipe worth sharing.”

7. Her fondness for bibs

Even Jill’s fondness for making her kids wear bibs when it comes to messy mealtimes has come under fire. After uploading a seemingly inoffensive pic of Israel and Samuel sporting bibs on Instagram, a follower felt inclined to respond, “Jill, I have a lot of respect for you and your choices. There is one thing that just drives me nuts!! It is those stinking bibs. Israel is way too big.”

“I’m a child development specialist and I find it odd for a kid that age to have a bib like that,” remarked another. However, several followers also leapt to Jill’s defense. “I’m 43 and I need a bib sometimes for sloppy joes. Let it go,” commented a less judgmental follower.

6. Her sex game revelation

Despite hailing from an ultra-conservative family, Jill isn’t afraid to admit that she enjoys sex. Indeed, the star may have only experienced her very first kiss on her wedding day, but she appears to have made up for lost time since. And while celebrating her fifth wedding anniversary, she perhaps shared a little too much information with her Instagram followers.

Indeed, during a holiday in the Missouri city of Branson, Jill uploaded various photos to her social media account. And it’s fair to say that one certainly stood out from the crowd. And that’s because alongside a copy of the Kama Sutra, the photo also featured a scorecard from an explicit game called Win It in a Minute: Bedroom Edition.

5. Her first ever salon haircut

The women of the Duggar family are renowned for their long curly locks, a choice inspired by the Bible. So when Jill traveled to the Arkansas city of Little Rock to get her hair done a little differently, it was a big deal. In fact, this was the first time ever that the star had visited a professional salon.

Jill left her signature long hair in the hands of Danielle Seewald, her sister-in-law. And after hours of washing, trimming and styling, Jill debuted her new look on Instagram. And she seemed to enjoy the experience, too, adding, “Great job girl! She made it manageable now and I already notice the curl holds much better.”

4. Her aspirations for her son

Following in her own footsteps, Jill’s sons Samuel and Israel are homeschooled via a program named the Advanced Training Institute. The biblical-based program is designed for “families who desire to raise up sons and daughters who are ‘mighty in Spirit’ and able to impact the world for Jesus Christ.” And it appears as though Jill wants Israel, in particular, to make an impact in the legal world.

Alongside an Instagram photo of her eldest son engaged in his schoolwork, Jill wrote, “He’s arguing for his point… I think he will be a good lawyer if he chooses to be one day!” Of course, Israel wouldn’t be the only aspiring lawyer in his family. His father Derick has also been a law school student since 2018.

3. Her controversial question

“If you died today, where would you go?” Many of Jill’s followers were taken aback when the star asked this question after posting clips of Matt Redman’s Christian tune “10,000 Reasons” on her Instagram. The star also uploaded a link to a Southern Baptist Convention page named “How to Become a Christian.”

Those who followed the link would have seen a recruitment-style message which began, “You’re not here by accident. God loves you. He wants you to have a personal relationship with Him through Jesus, His Son. There is just one thing that separates you from God. That one thing is sin.”

2. Her sex tips

Jill certainly isn’t shy when it comes to talking about her sex life. In a blog piece published in June 2019, the reality star offered readers advice when it came to the physical side of a marriage. Her tips included having regular sex, avoiding masturbation and taking the time to cater for each other’s needs.

The reality star wrote, “Have sex often! You both need this time together regularly… And when you may not be able to actually have intercourse for a period of time or for health issues, find other ways to have fun and be intimate. Let your spouse know that you’re always available.”

1. Her birth control views

Jill may have grown up surrounded by no less than 18 siblings. But it appears that she doesn’t want to follow in her parents’ footsteps when it comes to her own brood. In fact, she and her husband once indicated that they used birth control – implying that they’re happy with their family of four.

Many fans were surprised when Derick confirmed that contrary to rumors, he and wife Jill aren’t averse to birth control. He added, “My parents waited 11 years to start having kids, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Each Christian family should follow God’s leading for their own family, regarding when and how many kids to have.”
