In the early days of 2020 actress Cameron Diaz delivered some shocking news. You see, she and her spouse, Benji Madden, had welcomed a baby girl into the world. Since this revelation, though, the celebrity couple have kept relatively schtum about their little one. For instance, they’ve opted not to share any pictures of their child. But one inside source has apparently stepped forward and shared some juicy information about Diaz’s newborn.
Diaz and Madden did divulge some tidbits themselves, though, as on January 3 they posted the announcement on each of their official Instagram pages. It reads, “Happy New Year from the Maddens! We are so happy, blessed and grateful to begin this new decade by announcing the birth of our daughter, Raddix Madden. She has instantly captured our hearts and completed our family.”
“While we are overjoyed to share this news, we also feel a strong instinct to protect our little one’s privacy,” the statement continues. “So we won’t be posting pictures or sharing any more details, other than the fact that she is really, really cute!! Some would even say RAD. From our family to all of yours, we’re sending our love and best wishes for a Happy New Year and Happy New Decade.”
But before Diaz became a mom, she made waves as one of Hollywood’s darlings. Back in 2018, though, Diaz claimed she was more or less done with acting. And in that same year during an interview alongside Selma Blair and Christina Applegate for Entertainment Weekly, she teased, “I am actually retired, so I would love to see you ladies.”
Moreover, in August 2019 the actress appeared to re-confirm that statement when she spoke to InStyle magazine, saying, “The way I look at it is that I’ve given more than half of my life to the public. I feel it’s okay for me to take time for myself now to reorganize and choose how I want to come [back] into the world – if I decide to.”
In the same interview, Diaz also raved about Madden, whom she’d quietly wed in January 2015. “Getting married to him was the best thing that ever happened to me,” Diaz said. “My husband’s the best. He’s the greatest human being, and he’s my great partner… You need somebody who’s willing to do the work with you, because there’s no 60-40 in marriage. It’s 50-50 – period.”
Diaz went on to inform InStyle that she didn’t miss being an actress. And she pondered her future, stating, “Right now, I’m looking at the landscape of wellness and all that. But whatever I do, it has to be something I’m passionate about – something that just feels effortless.” Perhaps motherhood will be her newest passion.
In the past, however, Diaz seemed unsure about whether or not she would have children. In 2012, for instance, she told Harper’s Bazaar magazine, “If one day I am blessed with the experience of having a child, I would be overjoyed, but I am not sitting here feeling empty because I haven’t yet – or that I may not.”
Nonetheless, Diaz’s attitude seemed different when she spoke about the prospect of motherhood later in that year. When the actress was promoting her movie What To Expect When You’re Expecting, in fact, she made it clear that she enjoyed being around children. “I love kids, I have many kids in my life,” she informed Access Hollywood. “I’m an auntie [of] 15 years.”
“I’m totally open to having my own family, however that may come to me,” the then 40-year-old actress continued. “You have to find the right person to do that with. So when that happens, I’m excited about that.” And it appears that she’d found the right person in Madden.
On January 3, 2018 – exactly two years to the day before the baby announcement – Us Weekly magazine reported that Diaz and Madden were apparently desperately hoping for a child. You see, an unnamed source had allegedly informed the publication that the couple “would love to have a baby, [but] it just hasn’t worked out.”
And according to the magazine’s source, apparently Diaz and Madden “don’t know exactly what it will look like, whether it will be natural or through adoption or surrogacy, but they aren’t giving up… It’s been a roller coaster of emotions, yet they still believe there will be a happy ending.”
When the announcement finally came, then, it was met by celebration – as well as a fair amount of curiosity. Some people wanted to know more about Diaz’s fertility, for instance, while others focused on the baby’s unusual name. What did “Raddix” mean, and why had the celebrity couple chosen it for their child? Jokes about the name’s similarity to “radish” were bandied around, too.
The baby girl also happens to share a name with music producer Raddix. “It’s funny because I actually came up with the name on a Google random word generator back in 2012 and haven’t seen anyone else with that name since then,” he informed Page Six magazine. “I’m glad that now others love the name so much.”
“Names change almost every generation, and I’m glad I could be a part of the beginning of this generation of names,” the music producer added before saying he was glad to have “a little extra name recognition.” Page Six also speculated on another potential meaning of the newborn’s name: “Radix” with just a single “d” is a “root.”
However, in January an unnamed source apparently spoke to Us Weekly magazine about where they thought the name had come from. It was, they said, a combination of “rad” and a word meaning “new beginning.” The person, who claimed to be a friend of the family, reportedly added, “It’s so like Cam and Benji to pick a quirky yet meaningful name.”
The source went on to say that Diaz’s famous in-laws, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, were helping out with the baby, too. “They’re going to be a huge part of Raddix’s life,” the insider allegedly claimed. “The plan is to really integrate the two families, so all the kids can grow up together and be one big, happy family.”
Of course, the major question on everybody’s lips was simple: how exactly had Diaz done it? After all, not only had she not announced her pregnancy, but also in the months leading up to January 2020 she’d looked perfectly trim in photographs. So, had the 47-year-old carried the baby herself, or was Raddix the result of surrogacy?
“At seven months, [Diaz] would have been showing,” a fertility specialist named Dr. Gedis Grudzinskas informed The Mail On Sunday newspaper. “Women who are seven months pregnant typically put on 10 to 12 kilos, and most of that weight is around the lower abdomen.” Other medical experts, though, claimed that Diaz could still have carried the child herself – despite her slender appearance.
Debate raged in the newspapers, especially since Diaz herself was keeping so quiet. For instance, The Sun published an article by controversial writer Samantha Brick on the issue. It began, “Us 40-something women who try – and fail – to become mums are pig sick of these celebrity miracle baby stories.”
“I can’t get my head around the fact that so many A-listers would continue to hawk the myth that even in your 40s you can fall preggers at the drop of a hat,” Brick – who had undergone IVF treatment herself in an attempt to conceive – continued. “That is unkind to the rest of us who are trying… Not being truthful about this aspect of being a woman is utterly selfish.”
Other commentators thought that assessment was unfair, however. Writing for Stylist magazine, Hollie Richardson stated, “For some reason, people feel even more entitled to know everything about a woman’s reproductive organs. In the last few months alone, Halsey felt compelled to explain that her belly bloat was down to a gluten allergy. A tweet about Taylor Swift’s fertility, suggesting she’s ‘leaving it too late’ also went viral.”
“Source-led stories have now been run by tabloids, suggesting that Diaz and her husband Benji Madden conceived through surrogacy after trying to get pregnant using IVF treatment,” Richardson added. “[The Sun] responded to this with the headline: ‘Why can’t stars like Cameron Diaz admit having a baby in your 40s is usually down to a test tube?’”
The problem, Richardson opined, is that there’s a stigma surrounding IVF. She then wrote, “this stigma should definitely not exist, not in 2020, because IVF is the most common fertility treatment for people who are unable to conceive naturally. According to a government report, there were over 1 million IVF treatment cycles in the U.K. between 1991 and 2016.”
Richardson noted that Amy Schumer – another celebrity – was undergoing IVF. Schumer had actually opened up about the experience on Instagram in January 2020, writing, “I’m a week into IVF and feeling really run down and emotional. If anyone went through it, and if you have any advice or wouldn’t mind sharing your experience with me, please do. My number is in my bio.”
Nonetheless, the writer stated that just because some women were open about IVF, it didn’t mean that complete strangers and the media were entitled to know the ins and outs of every pregnancy. Regarding Diaz and Schumer, Richardson wrote, “Both women are entitled to do what the hell they want.”
“The whole point is that women have choices about their bodies, their decisions and their children,” Richardson concluded. “Expecting them to publicly talk about the biggest physical and emotional thing that will ever happen to them only feeds into the disturbing and outdated narrative that women need to explain their bodies. They absolutely do not.”
And later in January more information surfaced about Diaz’s baby – but again apparently from an anonymous source, not the woman herself. Yes, a person claiming to be in the know reportedly spoke to celebrity gossip website Radar Online and claimed that Diaz had sacrificed both fame and fortune to become a mother.
“Cam has turned down dozens of roles over these past few years, and it’s no exaggeration to say she could have banked up to $100 million or even more if she’d been working instead of resting and planning her domestic future,” the source allegedly stated. But, they said, Diaz believed it was “a price worth paying.”
“To be fair, she and Benji aren’t exactly short of cash, even after she turned her back on Hollywood,” the source apparently continued. “There’s a growing feeling she’ll get back to making movies once she’s had six months or so to bond with the baby. At the end of the day, she’s just too talented and in-demand to stay in retirement forever.”
In addition, Radar Online believed that Diaz would be flying out to Hawaii with her husband and the baby. An insider reportedly informed the site that when Raddix was “at least two months and fully fit to fly,” the family would be going on a babymoon. The source reportedly added, “There’s a big part of Cameron [that would] love to quit Hollywood and move to Hawaii full-time – and that’s something Benji’s open to as well.”
For those who were already curious about Raddix’s moniker, they perhaps became even more intrigued when her middle names were revealed. And a website called The Blast managed to get hold of the little girl’s birth certificate. This document revealed that she came into the world on December 30, 2019, and her full name is Raddix Chloe Wildflower Madden.
Harper’s Bazaar subsequently speculated that the middle name Wildflower might actually be a tribute to one of Diaz’s friends. You see, her Charlie’s Angels co-star Drew Barrymore titled her memoir Wildflower, so the name seems to be of significance. Neither actress has commented on the matter so far, however.
As well as from digging up new details about Raddix’s name, the media hunted out further information about the family. On January 17 The Sun declared that Diaz and Madden wanted a sibling for Raddix “as soon as possible.” According to an alleged source, the new parents were “beyond smitten – barely leaving the house or going out, as they just want to watch her sleep and feed.”
“They can’t believe how much their worlds have turned upside down and are already thinking ‘Why did we leave this so long?’” the alleged source continued. “Now they are thinking, ‘Let’s give her a brother or sister, let’s make a bigger family,’ especially Benji, as he’s a twin, so [he] would love for his daughter to have a sibling close in age.”
And various people who allegedly claimed to be close to Diaz and Madden spoke to Page Six in January about the famous couple. For instance, a person apparently described as “a screenwriter who has worked with the actress” claimed the couple kept their lives so private to make sure that “no one outside their tight small circle hears from them.”
Another person told the magazine that Raddix was indeed born via surrogate and that the couple “tried forever to get pregnant. They did acupuncture, special diets, IVF, supplements. They went to the best fertility doctors. They tried to adopt. Nothing worked.” The source also reportedly claimed that Diaz had put motherhood above her career.
The “Diaz pal” also allegedly told the magazine, “For Cam, this was her priority over acting, doing books – any kind of career. She was compelled.” Another source reportedly claimed Diaz had started wanting a child only after Madden came into her life, stating, “Even though she’d said she never thought of having kids, that all changed when she met him.”
Other sources claimed that while Raddix was currently staying in the same bedroom as her mom and dad, a new pink nursery room was all done up and ready for her. Furthermore, Diaz and Madden allegedly wouldn’t be hiring a nanny, as they wanted to be “hands-on” parents. Madden’s music career had been put on the backburner, too.
Another alleged friend of the famous couple apparently told Page Six, “Diapers are all they’re thinking about. And maybe another baby.” So, if the stories about Diaz and Madden’s utter devotion to their new baby are true, then Raddix looks set to have a very charmed life indeed.
However, Diaz is far from the only celebrity to keep her little one’s life largely under wraps. One of Hollywood’s most famous power duos – Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively – also make sure that their kids’ lives stay on the down-low. But when they added to their brood for the third time, Reynolds simply couldn’t contain himself.
Reynolds and Lively make no secret of being a couple; sometimes, they can even be seen playfully trolling each other on social media. But as we’ve just mentioned, when the pair started to grow their family, they decided to hold back a little, shielding their kids from the media circus that comes with fame. Still, Reynolds seemingly couldn’t help himself from spilling the beans on his third daughter. And when the Deadpool actor opened up about the new arrival, he dropped quite the bombshell.
It’s believed that Reynolds and Lively’s youngest was born in late summer 2019. But as the stars don’t typically make announcements about their private lives – especially any that concern their kids – the public didn’t hear this happy news from the parents themselves.
In fact, the actors never formally explained that they were going to add another member to their clan. Instead, the world at large only found out in May 2019, when Lively accompanied her husband to the New York premiere of Detective Pikachu. Reynolds had provided the voice and facial expressions of the lead character in the animated movie.
And at the event, Lively wore a figure-hugging yellow dress – one that clearly wasn’t designed to hide the secret the couple had successfully kept from the media. Yes, the Gossip Girl actress was visibly pregnant, and it appeared that she had been for several months.
For those who don’t know, Reynolds first met Lively in the early months of 2010, when the two starred together in Green Lantern. In the D.C. Comics superhero flick, Lively memorably played Carol Ferris, the longtime girlfriend of Reynolds’ aircraft test pilot Hal Jordan – the Green Lantern of the title. It should be said, though, that the actors’ own relationship didn’t blossom until after the film hit movie theaters.
For one, Reynolds was married at the time to Scarlett Johansson, with whom he had tied the knot in 2008. A little over two years after their union, however, the couple separated before finally divorcing in July 2011. And that left Reynolds a single man – although not for long, as he and Lively ultimately took their romance public in October 2011.
Then, after the news that Reynolds and Lively had gotten together had broken, they were described as “nesting” by People. According to a source, the couple had bought a home together in April 2012, with the country-style dwelling in question located in Bedford, New York.
The insider claimed, too, that Reynolds and Lively had paid more than $2 million for their new home. But despite the speculation over the progress of their relationship, the stars did little to bat back the rumors. They remained low-key, in fact, choosing to hang out with each other’s families in New York and Vancouver as well as working out together and dining out locally.
Then, in September 2012, Reynolds and Lively married in their own muted style in a ceremony that took place near Charleston, South Carolina. A white marquee was erected on the Boone Hall Plantation to house the goings-on of the big day, which included a performance by a DJ and a few songs sung by Lively’s friend Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine.
And after two years of marriage, Lively shared some exciting news with users of her former lifestyle website Preserve. You got it: the young actress revealed that she was pregnant with her first child. And although she may be notoriously secretive about her children, Lively has actually made no bones about her thoughts on family.
The star set a precedent that she would follow with subsequent pregnancies, too, by taking to the red carpet in October 2014 to show off her first baby bump. The occasion marked the actress’ debut public appearance since the announcement, and the visibly excited mom-to-be spoke candidly at the New York City event about her thoughts on motherhood.
At the time, Lively revealed to Us Weekly how she felt about her impending arrival, saying, “I never knew what I wanted to do for a living, but I knew I wanted to have a lot of kids. I had come from a big family, so it was always important to me.”
Indeed, Lively is the youngest of five siblings. She and her older brother, Eric, arrived during her mom Elaine’s second marriage, joining half-sisters Lori and Robyn and half-brother Jason. And in 2012 Lively joked to Allure, “I’d have 30 [children] if I could.”
Still, judging by the secrecy that surrounded the couple’s first child, it’s possible that fans may never know how many kids they end up having. You see, it was only in January 2015 that the media broke the news of the safe arrival of Reynolds and Lively’s baby. And even then, details about the birth initially remained vague.
It’s believed that Lively went into labor during the holiday period in 2014 – and reportedly weeks before her due date. Yet while the baby’s exact date of birth hasn’t been revealed publicly, the world did go on to learn that she was a girl. It also emerged that she had been given the rather unlikely name of James.
When Lively appeared on Good Morning America in April 2015, however, she revealed just why her daughter had such an unusual moniker. According to the star, James was “a family name, and [she] liked having a boy’s name.” James was actually the name of Reynolds’ father, who passed away in 2015.
Furthermore, Lively’s great-uncle had actually been the inspiration for her own first name. And it seems as though the actress had taken to motherhood like a duck to water. She admitted on Good Morning America, “I feel like I’ve figured out the most important thing to me, and everything supports that.” But how exactly did Reynolds feel about becoming a dad?
Well, in a February 2015 interview on the Late Show with David Letterman, Reynolds gushed about his wife and his first-born. The actor said, “I’m not one for vomiting declarations of sentiment out across the airwaves, but when we had that baby, I fell more in love with my wife than I’d ever been in my entire life. I couldn’t even believe it.”
But, eventually, Reynolds exchanged sentimentality for his trademark dry humor. He added, “I used to say to [Blake], ‘I would take a bullet for you. I could never love anything as much as I love you.’ I would say that to my wife.” When he looked at his newborn daughter, though, his position changed.
Reynolds continued, “And the second I looked in that baby’s eyes, I knew in that exact moment that if we were ever under attack, I would use my wife as a human shield to protect that baby.” Still, Lively can give as good as she gets, as her wit is as sharp as her husband’s.
This was proved on Father’s Day in 2015, when Lively paid a tribute of sorts to her husband. To mark the occasion, the couple made a rare image of their daughter – who was sitting in a baby carrier worn by Reynolds – available to the public via Instagram. And in the message accompanying the snap, the new mom joked to Reynolds, “Since the day our baby was born, I’ve felt so strongly in my heart that you were most likely the father.”
But, of course, the couple didn’t stop at just one child. Indeed, rumors began circulating about another little one on the way when Lively was filming 2016 movie The Shallows. In particular, it was suggested that a baby bump was visible beneath the star’s wetsuit while she was shooting on location in Malibu. That gossip was later confirmed when the actress showed a growing belly at that year’s Cannes Film Festival.
However, yet again, the arrival of the couple’s second child was shrouded in secrecy. In October 2016, then, speculation mounted that the baby had been born the previous month, although later reports suggested that the birth had actually happened in early November. In any case, Reynolds let slip that his youngest was a girl when he was interviewed on Conan in late 2016.
And the world got a rare glimpse of the whole family in December 2016, when Reynolds was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Naturally, Lively was by his side during the unveiling along with James and the baby girl whom the actors had named Inez. But although it was Reynolds who was receiving the distinction, his two young daughters were the ones to steal the limelight.
While toddler James grabbed a mic and played to the cameras, Reynolds paid tribute to his wife at the event. The actor said, “[Blake], you make absolutely everything in my life better. You’ve given me two of the most incredible children that I could ever [have] hoped to have.” But, of course, he couldn’t resist a joke to cut through the sappiness.
Reynolds then quipped, “You’ve made me the father of my dreams when I thought I only had ‘fun uncle’ potential.” And if the then-two-year-old James’ performance at the ceremony is anything to go by, she may yet end up on screen. Indeed, Reynolds would later reveal his daughter’s desire to follow her parents into acting.
During a December 2019 appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Reynolds spoke candidly about his eldest daughter’s career aspirations, saying, “[James] wants to be an actor.” And it’s something that the star fully supports – but only as a hobby while James is still in school.
Reynolds explained, “Yep. I’m fine if [James] wants to be an actor. Go ahead. You know, in school – do afterschool stuff like that. That’s all fine. Right now, it’s – every day is like a recital. She’s singing songs, she’s doing little plays at home, all that stuff.” But then the star got serious.
“Being a child actor in movies and stuff – that’s a whole other ball of wax,” Reynolds continued. “I tried to explain to [James that] that’s a huge burden on your nervous system. I mean, having to process all of that attention and information. Also, you develop all of these unhealthy coping mechanisms.”
But, of course, it wouldn’t have been a Reynolds interview without a risqué punchline. And that duly arrived when Reynolds explained, “[James] just looked at me, like she didn’t know what… I was talking about. And I was like, ‘What’s cheaper and easier is – let’s just skip showbiz and enroll you right into cocaine.’” Yet while the actor seems to be willing to talk about his kids up to a point, he and Lively have a good reason for largely shielding their offspring from the spotlight.
Lively explained all to Marie Claire in 2016, saying, “Ryan had a nice, normal upbringing, and we want our kids to have the same normal life that we had. We don’t ever want to rob them of what we had because we’d feel really selfish.” Unsurprisingly, then, the actress’ third pregnancy was as low-key as her previous two had been.
Indeed, as mentioned earlier, the first the public knew about baby number three was by spotting Lively’s visible baby bump at the May 2019 premiere of Detective Pikachu. And yet again, there has been no big announcement of the birth. While reports of the new arrival emerged in October 2019, then, some believed that the child may actually have already been two months old at that point.
Then, on October 17, 2019, Reynolds took to Twitter to encourage Canadians to vote. This message was accompanied by an image of him and his wife gazing adoringly at each other amid a forest backdrop. And clutched between the happy couple is what was presumed to be their newborn baby – albeit with their face obscured in the shot.
No other details of Reynolds and Lively’s newborn were known at that point. But since the Canadian made reference to his “daughters” in the tweet, it was presumed that their new arrival was a third girl. And fans would have to wait patiently for another two months before the actor spoke openly about his growing family.
During a December 2019 interview with Extra, Reynolds admitted that his wife and daughters are “doing great.” He continued, “I kind of like my life. I’m really sort of into my children, which I know isn’t popular to say. It’s hard [having] three girls.” This was confirmation, then, that the Deadpool star is surrounded by females.
In fact, being part of a family of girls seems to suit Reynolds, as in December 2019 he told Today, “I’d have it no other way.” But the actor quickly resorted to his famous comedic style during that interview, adding that he and Lively were doing their bit to “wipe men off the face of the Earth.”
And while Reynolds and Lively haven’t as yet revealed the name of their newest daughter, that hasn’t stopped the proud dad from teasing fans about it. Yes, when the Today show interviewer asked the actor to reveal all, Reynolds seized the opportunity to have a bit of fun.
At first, Reynolds claimed, “We haven’t [picked a name] yet!” After that, though, he quickly added, “All the letters in her name are silent. I want to give her something to push against in life.” It seems, then, that fans will have to wait a little longer to learn baby number three’s moniker.
Regardless of what the doting parents have chosen, though, they’ve since learned to plan their work schedules carefully. As Reynolds revealed to People in May 2019, “If [Lively] is doing a movie in Thailand, and I am doing a movie in Vancouver, we would just never see each other. We operate as a unit, and that works really well for us.”
Indeed, the couple are committed to keeping their clan together wherever work takes them. Reynolds continued, “The kids stay with us, and the family stays together, and that is where home is. So if we are in Spain or Utah or New York – as long as we are together, we’re home.”
