Undoubtedly, 2016 has been a great year for film. Thanks to big hitters like Captain America: Civil War and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, major studios have reaped innumerable box office receipts worldwide. And although 2016 continued to see controversial pay gaps between leading men and women, cinema’s female performers have still received their share of the year’s profits. Just take a look at these stars who – according to Forbes magazine – have been paid stunning salaries in the year from June 2015 to June 2016.
10. Deepika Padukone – $10 million
As the world’s largest film producer, Bollywood can naturally pay its stars hefty pay checks. Nevertheless, Deepika Padukone is the only Indian actress to make it onto this list, even edging out more established stars like Priyanka Chopra when it comes to how much she earned in the 12 months to June 2016.
And that’s mainly because, since her 2007 film debut, Padukone has proved a successful box office draw. To wit, her latest title Bajirao Mastani gained $52 million worldwide and contributed sizeably to the star’s $10 million earnings.
9. Mila Kunis – $11 million
While Mila Kunis wasn’t anywhere to be seen on screens from June 2015 to June 2016. she still earned an enviable salary during that time. Indeed, thanks in part to endorsements from Gemfields and Jim Beam, she gained $11 million during that period alone.
And yet, despite her and husband Ashton Kutcher’s combined wealth, Kunis remains down-to-earth… especially when it comes to her kids Wyatt and Dmitri. “It’s a matter of teaching them from a very early age… ‘Mommy and Daddy may have a dollar, but you’re poor,’” she joked on the Kyle and Jackie O Show in August 2016.
8. Julia Roberts – $12 million
Three decades into her film career, Julia Roberts is still leading the charge as one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses. To demonstrate, she received a whopping $3 million for four days’ filming on 2016 romcom Mother’s Day. Not bad work if you can get it…
Besides this supporting role, Roberts also starred in box office hit Money Monster and continues to earn big bucks as a brand ambassador for Lancome. In the 12 months to June 2016, then, the star saw $12 million added to her already substantial bank balance.
7. Amy Adams – $13.5 million
With $13.5 million earned from June 2015 to June 2016 and her plum role as Lois Lane in Batman V Superman, Amy Adams has presumably had a pretty good year. And 2017 is shaping up to be pretty sweet, too, as her acclaimed turns in Arrival and Nocturnal Animals may see her poised for Oscar success.
It was also in 2016, though, that Adams became one of the few actresses to open up about the Hollywood gender pay gap. When discussing her American Hustle salary to GQ in February of that year, she elaborated, “I knew I was being paid less, but I still agreed to do it. It doesn’t mean I liked it.”
6. Charlize Theron – $16.5 million
Following the box office success of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, Charlize Theron continued her financial gains into 2016. Indeed, the South African star received $16.5 million for her hard work from June 2015 to June 2016.
Most of this wealth comes from Theron’s starring role in Huntsman: Winter’s War, for which she received $10 million. Furthermore, the star continues to generate profit due to her patronage of Dior J’Adore.
5. Fan Bingbing – $17 million
You may be most familiar with Fan Bingbing for her role as Blink in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. However, the star is ubiquitous in her native China, meaning that in the year up to June 2016 she earned a whopping $17 million.
Her most notable role of 2016, meanwhile, was opposite Jackie Chan and Johnny Knoxville in action comedy Skiptrace – a film that earned $60 million at the box office. In addition, she added to her bank balance with endorsements from L’Oreal and Chopard.
4. Jennifer Aniston – $21 million
These days, Jennifer Aniston may not have anything like Friends’ $1 million per episode deal, but she still commands a hefty eight-figure salary. And – thanks to a combination of film roles and endorsements – she netted $21 million from June 2015 to June 2016.
Part of that astonishing total was down to her fee for Mother’s Day, as well as perhaps those for Storks and the recently released Office Christmas Party. However, endorsements with the likes of Aveeno, SmartWater and airline Emirates are what really contributed to Aniston’s financial success during that period.
3. Scarlett Johansson – $25 million
In terms of box office receipts, few stars were as successful in 2016 as Scarlett Johansson. Indeed, the actress appeared in two of the year’s top five grossing films – The Jungle Book and Captain America: Civil War.
Besides roles in 2016’s smash hits, though, Johansson also reportedly netted $17.5 million for 2017 anime remake Ghost in the Shell. It’s likely, then, that come June 2017 the star will have surpassed the $25 million she earned in the previous 12 months.
2. Melissa McCarthy – $33 million
While 2016’s female-led reboot of Ghostbusters met with some negative buzz prior to its release, star Melissa McCarthy certainly didn’t have any reason to be fazed. Reportedly, the actress received a $14 million fee for her part in the film.
McCarthy also acted in hits like Central Intelligence and The Boss – the latter of which made $78 million at the box office. Meanwhile, her fashion line Seven7 also kept the money rolling in – and this all means that the actress racked up a handsome salary of $33 million in the 12 months to June 2016.
1. Jennifer Lawrence – $46 million
Although her Hunger Games franchise ended in 2015, Jennifer Lawrence is still the reigning queen of box office receipts. And with $46 million banked from June 2015 to June 2016, she’s also the world’s highest-paid actress for the second time in a row.
Much of Lawrence’s wealth stems from a $20 million fee for sci-fi Passengers – a salary seemingly influenced by her outrage over the Hollywood pay gap. Meanwhile, X-Men: Apocalypse and residual checks from The Hunger Games also kept the star’s bank balance firmly in the black.
