Prince George And Princess Charlotte’s Behavior Made The Royals Center Of Attention At A Wedding

It’s been a good year for royal weddings and for fans of the royal children. Prince George and Princess Charlotte were naturally present for the marriage of their uncle, Prince Harry, to Meghan Markle. But that wasn’t the only 2018 wedding that the pair went to. You see, in September 2018, they attended the nuptials of one of Charlotte’s godmothers – and they nearly ended up stealing the show.

Prince George of Cambridge is heir to the British throne. One day, after Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles and Prince William have all completed their reigns, he’ll be king. So it goes without saying that the media appear to keep an extremely close eye on him. In fact, almost everything he does in public ends up finding its way into the newspapers.

However, his parents have reportedly taken steps to ensure he still has as normal a childhood as possible. They don’t take him to many royal functions, for instance, and in 2015, Kensington Palace even issued a warning statement about press intrusion. In a message to the global media, they criticized paparazzi who went to “extreme lengths” to photograph George.

Luckily, though, George seems like a happy, normal child whenever official photographs of him are released. The same is true of his sister, Princess Charlotte. And although Kate and William try not to reveal too much about their children in interviews, the picture that they do paint of George and Charlotte is one of mischievous, silly, ordinary kids.

Now, the newest addition to their family is Prince Louis, who was born in April 2018. Like his siblings, he was shown to the world on the steps of the hospital shortly after he was born to allow the media to take photographs. However, unsurprisingly, he hasn’t been seen in public much since then, apart from at his baptism in July that same year.

The christening was the first time that all three royal siblings had been seen together, in fact, and the media took note of how happy George seemed. Some official photographs were taken for the occasion too, which included the whole Cambridge family, Harry and Meghan, and the Middletons.

It looked like a great day for the Cambridge clan. And another one came along in September 2018, although Louis appeared to have been left at home this time. The event was the wedding of Sophie Carter, one of Charlotte’s godmothers and a close friend of Kate, to Robert Snuggs. Sophie has major connections to the royals and was even present at Windsor Castle when Harry married Meghan.

Now the theme colors for the Carter/Snuggs nuptials appeared to be blue and white. Consequently, Kate wore an all-blue outfit, a Catherine Walker coat and matching dress in lace, which she paired with a striking, custom-made headpiece from Juliette Botterill Millinery – the same company that designed her a headpiece for Louis’ baptism.

And, as they were included in the wedding party – George as a page boy and Charlotte a flower girl – both of the children also had on blue and white outfits. Their ensembles were designed by Amaia, a childrenswear brand that Kate seems to like a lot. Charlotte wore a white dress with blue embroidery, while George sported a white shirt with blue cropped trousers.

What’s more, sharp-eyed royal family fans soon spotted a photograph that showed off the pair’s outfits. Amaia Kids had posted a picture of several neatly lined up wedding outfits for children on its Instagram page. Some people noticed, though, that written on two of the hangers were the names George and Charlotte. However, the company quickly removed the post.

But that photo faux-pas wasn’t what seemed to get the media talking the most; instead, it was the adorable pictures of George and Charlotte at the wedding. They seemed to behave just like regular kids as they messed around for the cameras. George, all dressed up, did a sort of marching dance, while Charlotte watched on with an entertained expression.

“George is a real star, quite the little chap,” an anonymous source told People magazine, which reported on the event. “He was having a great time, running around like the leader of the pack.” Prince William himself told CNN in 2013, when George was still a baby, that the little boy was a “rascal.”

Charlotte was also snapped doing something cute. When the group photographs were taken of the wedding guests, Kate held the little princess up, but Charlotte herself was holding a lovely blue satin purse. It was Kate’s, and she’d obviously let Charlotte have it. “Sorry, Kate, but Charlotte may have just worn it better,” Marie Claire said.

Moreover, this isn’t the first time that George and Charlotte have stolen the spotlight at a wedding. Before Harry and Meghan’s ceremony in May 2018, Charlotte was photographed sticking her tongue out for the cameras as she travelled to the chapel. This was a pitch-perfect recreation of something that her uncle had done when he was a kid.

And Kate and William’s daughter apparently also showed off some leadership skills at the wedding. “Charlotte was totally taking charge of them all, but very sweetly, telling the others they couldn’t go down the aisle yet,” a source told People. “Meghan looked over at them and smiled. It all felt very normal and very natural — not like a formal state occasion in any way. It was amazing.” But then both royal children have experience when it comes to helping out at weddings.

You see, the duo also served as flower girl and page boy at the wedding of Kate’s sister, Pippa Middleton, in 2017. That event too was packed full of adorable moments, including George waving royally at the people on the street as he was driven by in a car. And Kate’s parenting skills were on full display as well.

Indeed, some photographers at the event spotted Kate taking George to one side and seemingly telling him off for something. And a video of the wedding showed George appearing to step on Pippa’s train, so perhaps that was why. George looked like he was crying and pouting for a while, but he seemed to cheer up eventually.

Moreover, royal parenting seems to have changed a lot in the past century. Back when Prince Charles was born to Queen Elizabeth, there was very much a “seen and not heard” approach to royal children. Charles was put into the care of governesses and nannies while his parents travelled the world attending to their royal duties.

Charles’ children, William and Harry, were treated very differently, however. Their mother, Princess Diana, wanted to ensure the boys’ childhoods were as normal as possible. She took them out for family days so they could have fun and dropped them off at school by herself whenever she could. Importantly, Diana reportedly made sure that her schedule was arranged around them, instead of the other way around.

The new generation of royals seem to be very much the product of modern royal parenting, rather than the stiff-upper-lip kind. One day, then, George, Charlotte and Louis will be grown up and possibly undertaking royal duties themselves, but for now, their parents appear to be doing a great job of letting them be kids for as long as they can.
