The god of thunder, Thor himself, has moved back home to Australia, leaving behind a stellar mansion in Malibu. Chris Hemsworth – once People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” – is selling this pretty piece of real estate for $6.5 million, and you won’t believe what that price includes.
The home listing calls it “a home fit for a god,” and it’s an apt description. A gleaming gourmet eat-in kitchen, library and incredible master suite take up only a portion of this 6,800-square-foot property.
The gorgeous Victorian-style manor is perched on an acre in the elite Point Dume section of Malibu. Hemsworth resided there with his Spanish actress/model wife Elsa Pataky and their three kids – India and twins Sasha and Tristan.
Boasting five bedrooms and a whopping six bathrooms, this elegant abode is also surrounded by palm trees and greenery and has no shortage of fantastic views. The ocean-facing side of this private gated estate is lined with verandas and balconies.
The stellar couple purchased this seaside haven in 2013 for $4.8m. And, interestingly, the seller was none other than Hemsworth’s fellow Australian actor Paul Hogan, he of Crocodile Dundee fame. Birds of a feather, eh?
The home was constructed in 1992 and in 2012 got refurbished in an updated European style that features what the house listing describes as “clean-lined designer finishes.” The house beautifully blends modern and classical design features.
Gorgeous molding along the walls and carved decorative pillars are painted white with black accents for a sleek contrast. Plus, the beach mansion retains a bright, airy, open feel while conjuring up a sense of warm coziness – thanks in part to fireplaces which dot its interior spaces.
It’s difficult to choose the best room in this dream home. Whether it’s a sitting area with a chaise longue beneath an arched window, or an intimate breakfast nook set within a rotund of windows, each room has a unique charm.
The fully equipped chef’s kitchen is definitely worth highlighting. This expansive eat-in cuisine would make the least-willing cook a happy chef in no time. Kitted out with high-caliber appliances, vaulted ceilings and a fireplace, it is a foodie haven. It also looks comfortable enough to spend hours in.
And, of course, you’ll want to spend many hours in the master suite. Who wouldn’t? Airy and tranquil, this large upstairs room also features an adjacent seating area, a private lanai (Hawaiian patio), a fireplace and a pair of walk-in closets.
Three further bedrooms also contain private en-suite bathrooms – plus, there’s a “bonus” bedroom. No celebrity home would be complete, however, without the requisite guest house. Duly obliging, Hemsworth’s swank pad boasts a one-bedroom which measures 620 square feet and sits atop the garage.
Elsewhere, the backyard, replete with flowering greenery and palm trees, slopes down toward the beach, which is just moments away. And the back of the house is lined with patios and entrances into the house.
It’s easy to imagine Hemsworth and his wife sitting outside under the trellised patio watching the sun set over the ocean. But back to reality: the house also contains office spaces for busy days spent working from home.
Meanwhile, a three-car garage appears to be “where the magic happens” for the built actor; it looks like it’s been converted into a deluxe home gym. And the fully-equipped workout room would have also come in handy for Pataky, who has starred in three heart-thumping Fast & Furious action movies.
For its part, Hemsworth’s own movie work is in fact part of the reason for his relocation to his homeland. The family recently moved to Byron Bay in New South Wales – not coincidentally another seaside area – so that he can shoot his latest blockbuster, Thor: Ragnarok, in Sydney. The film is also, Hemsworth admits, a welcome return to Oz.
After having spent close to ten years residing in Los Angeles, Hemsworth divulged in an interview with the Today Show’s Sylvia Jeffreys that while he adored living in the U.S., “it never felt like home.” He said that as soon as he gets off the plane in Australia he feels as though he’s “back.”
Hemsworth says he’s happy to return to living on the coast, too. “It’s what’s familiar,” he said on the Today Show. He explained that he wants his three kids to experience a similar seaside environment to the one he was raised in.
Hemsworth and Pataky are, though, leaving behind a neighborhood of fellow stars and family. The Thor actor’s brother Liam, of Hunger Games renown, lives nearby in Malibu, along with celebrity neighbors like Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow and brother Liam’s on-again off-again fiancé, Miley Cyrus.
Ryan Davis, the listing agent for Hemsworth and Pataky, said he knows the Hemsworth brothers very well. He told Zillow.com, “I helped Liam find his house in Malibu – and they are wonderful to work with, salt of the earth.”
It seems Hemsworth and Pataky are leaving a lot behind, but their new Byron Bay home is arguably even more impressive than the Malibu manor. Costing a cool $7m, the Balinese-style hideaway has eight bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a seriously sweet swimming pool, and ocean views that may even rival the beauty of Malibu.
