20 Superhero Stars And Their Stunt Doubles That Will Seriously Make You Look Twice

To make real movie magic, it takes more than actors. The people behind all those superhero movie stunts are generally stunt doubles – hugely talented but also hugely underrated crew-members. But crucially, all of them have bear a strong resemblance to the actor they’re doubling for, too. Seeing them side-by-side may make you do – no pun intended – a double take.

20. Chris Hemsworth and Bobby Holland Hanton

Bobby Holland Hanton has played several famous movie heroes. He’s doubled for Daniel Craig’s James Bond, Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern, Christian Bale’s Batman – and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor! He clearly bonded with Hemsworth on Thor: The Dark World and sang his praises to the Business Insider site in 2013. “If Chris wasn’t an actor, he’d be one of the top stuntmen around,” the double said.

18. Andrew Garfield and William Spencer

The producers of The Amazing Spider-Man wanted a skateboarder for their Spidey stunts. So, they turned to YouTuber William Spencer, also known as “The Skate Ninja.” Despite missing his first audition, Spencer went on to double Andrew Garfield in two Amazing Spider-Man films. “I’m always surprised when I get called to do a movie,” he told sports network ESPN in 2012. “It’s a big thing to have people bank on you to make something good enough to entertain people on a massive scale.”

Alex Armbruster absolutely loved being the stunt double for Jay Hernandez’s El Diablo in Suicide Squad. “It was such an amazing experience working alongside actors like Will Smith and Margot Robbie and just being a part of the D.C .Comics world,” he told movie-blogger Matthew Toffolo in 2017. “I’ve now developed a bit of a collecting habit for any Diablo-related merchandise I can find… After all, it’s probably the closest I’ll get to having an action figure of myself!”

16. Hugh Jackman and Daniel Stevens

Once, when rocking the Wolverine hairstyle on the set of X-Men: Origins, Daniel Stevens looked so much like Hugh Jackman that the star’s own daughter got them confused. Stevens too had to put on muscle to play the iconic superhero, eating the exact same food that Jackman did. But it all paid off, as he also doubled for Jackman on The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past. In fact, Stevens was the fight co-ordinator for that last one, as well.

No, you’re not seeing double – there really is a man out there who looks exactly like Michael Douglas. That’s Mike Runyard, his stunt double, and the pair have worked together since 1988. The duo’s movies include Black Rain, The Game, Basic Instinct, and of course Ant-Man. In it, Douglas plays the original miniscule hero, Hank Pym. 14. Scarlett Johansson and Heidi Moneymaker

Scarlett Johansson’s stunt double for Black Widow, Heidi Moneymaker, is considered one of the best stuntwomen in the world. And she’s got the scars to prove it, too, as some of her Black Widow work was downright dangerous, as all stunt work is. Indeed, Moneymaker ended up seriously damaging her collarbone on the set of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But she’s still working, and the talent runs in the family – her sister Renae Moneymaker is also a stunt double.

11. Gal Gadot and Alicia Vela-Bailey

Gal Gadot did as many of her own stunts for Wonder Woman as possible. But for the things she couldn’t do, a stunt double called Alicia Vela-Bailey stepped in. Dots were placed on the double’s face so Gadot’s visage could be CGI-ed in later. It doesn’t sound glamorous, but Vela-Bailey loved it. “I just felt very honored and lucky to have been able to [be] a part of this project and work with all these amazing women,” she told Brazilian movie website Setima Cabine in 2017.

10. Clark Gregg and Dane Farwell

Clark Gregg started off playing Agent Coulson in the Marvel movies, but later switched to the Marvel TV series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. His stunt double, Dane Farwell, looks like he could be Gregg’s twin. “Of course, I never use an amazing badass stuntman, but if I did… #danefarwell might be a good choice,” Gregg joked on Instagram in 2017, alongside a picture of the pair.

Indeed, the pair have worked on Final Score, Blade Runner 2049, and Avengers: Infinity War among others.

2. Chadwick Boseman and Daniel Graham

Albert Valladares must have had a blast on the set of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice . The stuntman and free runner with the nifty nickname of “Spider” played not just Superman but Batman as well. Two of the biggest superheroes in history, and he was both of them! And even though the film was a critical flop, that in itself is a very impressive achievement.
