We had the time of our lives watching Dirty Dancing, and we owe it all to its magnificent cast! But what happened to the stars behind the famous film’s success?

Few films are as iconic as 1987’s seminal Dirty Dancing. Featuring then relative unknowns Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, the movie became an instant classic thanks in part to the smoldering chemistry between its two lead stars. And while Jimmy Ienner’s Oscar- and Grammy-winning score has earned its place in pop culture history, we have to tip our hat to the entire cast who made this film a staple of movie marathons everywhere. But, nearly three decades on, what are the cast of Dirty Dancing doing now? Let us fill you in…

10. Jennifer Grey – Baby Houseman

As central character Baby Houseman, Jennifer Grey was front and center for much of Dirty Dancing’s most memorable scenes – from simply carrying a watermelon to that famous final lift. And despite her initial reservations about appearing on screen with Patrick Swayze again – they had struggled to gel while filming 1984’s Red Dawn together – Grey showcased a sizzling on-screen presence that all but guaranteed a glittering career.

Despite Dirty Dancing’s resounding success, though, Grey’s career never reached the dizzying heights it was predicted to. The star has since blamed her decision to get plastic surgery in 1989, leaving her once famous face virtually unrecognizable. As she admitted to The Mirror in 2012, “I went into the operating room a celebrity and came out anonymous.” But after decades of living in obscurity, Grey became a household name – and face – again after winning Dancing with the Stars in 2010.

9. Cynthia Rhodes – Penny Johnson

After displaying her dancing feet in Flashdance and Staying Alive, Cynthia Rhodes was the perfect choice to star in Dirty Dancing. And, as Johnny Castle’s pregnant dance partner Penny Johnson, Rhodes gave the film a much-needed edge and a morality tale about the pitfalls of young love.

Following her appearance in Dirty Dancing, though, Rhodes turned her back on the showbiz world. In 1989, meanwhile, the actress married singer Richard Marx – and while Rhodes continued to teach dance, she apparently abandoned her acting career altogether after the birth of her first son. The couple would have two more children together before eventually splitting in 2014.

8. Lonny Price – Neil Kellerman

Undoubtedly, Baby’s sniveling suitor Neil Kellerman didn’t appreciate seeing his crush fall for Swayze’s Johnny Castle. In a case of life somewhat imitating art, actor Lonny Price seemingly had a similarly miserable time filming Dirty Dancing. “I remember mud,” he recalled to People in 2007. “Days of trudging in mud to shoot “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” over and over.”

Perhaps inspired by this less than glamorous experience, Price has since taken up work behind the camera. He has enjoyed a stint as a director for Desperate Housewives and has also helmed a slew of successful theater productions, including Sweeney Todd and Camelot.

7. Wayne Knight – Stan

With just a few film credits to his name prior to Dirty Dancing, Wayne Knight was only meant to appear in one scene as camp activities director Stan. However, his role was eventually expanded – and it changed the trajectory of his acting career forever. Years later, moreover, Knight labeled the experience “a lot of fun” when talking to People.

And Knight finally shot to stardom as Seinfeld’s annoying neighbor Newman after the release of Dirty Dancing. Other similarly high-profile roles in Basic Instinct and Jurassic Park followed. In addition, the star lost over 100 pounds in weight – leaving him appearing noticeably slimmer than his former self.

6. Jane Brucker – Lisa Houseman

Unlike her little sister Baby, Lisa Houseman’s attention-seeking antics didn’t earn actress Jane Brucker a legion of fans following the film’s release. “I think Dirty Dancing gives the impression I’m a horrible singer,” she would admit to Moviefone in 2012. However, she remains “extremely grateful” for the role.

The film is almost 30 years old, yet Brucker doesn’t appear to have aged a day. Despite this, the star has only acted intermittently following her unendearing performance as Lisa, having last appeared on screen in the 2006 film Dishdogz. Nevertheless, she still finds work as a screenwriter.

5. Kelly Bishop – Marjorie Houseman

Though most fans know her as Marjorie Houseman, Kelly Bishop was originally slated to play Bungalow Bunny Vivian Pressman. After being spurred on by co-star Jerry Orbach, however, Bishop accepted the much larger role of Baby’s mom – but sacrificed a chance to get close to the hunky Patrick Swayze in the process.

These days, though, Bishop is arguably most famous for her appearance as Emily Gilmore on The Gilmore Girls – a role she played throughout its seven-season run. And following an nine-year hiatus, Bishop will be back in Emily’s privileged shoes later in 2016 when the show hits our screens again.

4. Neal Jones – Billy Kostecki

Like many of his fellow cast members, Neal Jones got his first taste of showbiz thanks to his role in Dirty Dancing. In fact, the role of Billy Kostecki – who introduces Baby and Johnny – was the actor’s first time on a film set. “It was all really bright lights to me,” he would tell website Hobo Trash Can in 2008. “Fascinating experience and a very memorable one.”

Since this first taste of fame, Jones has gone on to star in a wide variety of film and TV roles. Indeed, he has arguably enjoyed one of the most successful careers among his Dirty Dancing alumni, thanks to a major part as John Sixta in Generation Kill as well as a role in G.I. Jane and a recurring stint in Rescue Me.

3. Bruce Morrow – Magician

Despite being 52 years old during filming, Bruce Morrow actually made his film debut through his performance in Dirty Dancing. Before being cast in the small role as a magician, moreover, Morrow was a disc jockey and a beloved radio personality thanks to his work under the moniker “Cousin Brucie.”

While Dirty Dancing was something of a milestone for Morrow, the film’s release may have been overshadowed for him by his induction into the Radio Hall of Fame that same year; he would receive a similar honor from the National Association of Broadcasters in 2003. Currently, he hosts Cousin Brucie’s Saturday Night Party on Sirius Satellite Radio.

2. Miranda Garrison – Vivian Pressman

Nicknamed the “Bungalow Bunny,” Vivian Pressman was the amorous older resident who famously offered to pay Jonny for, ahem, X-rated dance lessons. But although actress Miranda Garrison was a perfect fit for Pressman, the role was originally meant for Kelly Bishop. Garrison – who also served as assistant choreographer – actually stepped in when Bishop became Marjorie Houseman.

Garrison opted for a career behind the camera following the film’s release and now has over 40 choreography credits to her name. What’s more, she has since gone back to her roots by serving as a judge on the U.K. reality series Dirty Dancing: The Time of Your Life.

1. Patrick Swayze – Johnny Castle

Although Patrick Swayze was already a semi-recognizable face thanks to roles in both The Outsiders and Red Dawn, it was his performance as gyrating Johnny Castle that sent him into superstardom. “Dirty Dancing just blew the lid off my career,” he told People in 2007. Indeed, high-profile movies like Ghost and Point Break would soon follow the film’s success.

Unfortunately, Swayze didn’t live to see the film’s three-decade anniversary. In January 2008, moreover, the star was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer – an illness he would succumb to just 18 months later. However, his memory lives on in his most iconic role – which still reminds us that “no one puts Baby in the corner.”
