Very few movie franchises have captured the world’s imagination quite like the Star Wars series. So it should probably come as no surprise to learn that the film universe’s stories have provoked various theories from fans – although some are more plausible than others. And the latest installment in the series, The Last Jedi, is no different in that regard, as a hidden detail in the script has been the subject of some very interesting speculation. What’s more, that fan hypothesis is likely to leave millions of Star Wars disciples stunned…
It’s fair to say that many moviegoing sci-fi fans had been frothing at the mouth in anticipation of The Last Jedi. And Rian Johnson’s film – starring Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver and a few old favorites – finally dropped at the end of 2017. The flick formed the second part of the so-called sequel trilogy, following on from J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens two years previously.
The Last Jedi continues the story of hero Rey, played by Ridley, and her battle with Driver’s villainous Kylo Ren, as the Resistance and First Order fight for space supremacy. Rey is aided by Master Jedi Luke Skywalker – a role reprised by Mark Hamill from the original trilogy – who teaches the young protagonist the ways of the Force.
And it appears that Star Wars aficionados could not get enough of the new film. Indeed, The Last Jedi had a phenomenal opening weekend in December 2017, reaping over $220 million in the U.S. The movie also went on to earn more than $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the biggest box-office draw on the planet for 2017. Furthermore, The Last Jedi’s sensational sales made it the ninth highest-grossing film ever made; The Force Awakens is third on that list.
The ticket-buying public weren’t the only ones to lap up The Last Jedi, however. Film reviewers did, too, and the motion picture subsequently earned an impressive Metacritic consensus rating of 85 on the online aggregator’s scale. The eighth Star Wars movie was lauded in particular by commentators for its stunning visuals, imaginative plot and emotional gravitas.
Yet despite the many millions of fans and critics who pored over The Last Jedi, the film contained a hidden detail that seemingly only one viewer picked up on. And that particular eagle-eyed Star Wars enthusiast posted about their discovery and subsequent theory on Reddit in January 2018. For those of you who have not had the chance to enjoy The Last Jedi, however, be warned – there are spoilers ahead…
The Redditor, only known as SprehdTehWerdEDM, points to the scene in Supreme Leader of the First Order Snoke’s throne room. There, Rey and Kylo Ren team up to defeat the Praetorian Guard. Following some tense dialogue after their triumph, the two characters then attempt to engage in a lightsaber battle. However, neither one is able to utilize the futuristic weapon.
The reason why Rey and Kylo Ren are unable to duel? According to SprehdTehWerdEDM, it is because hero and villain are both equally adept at using the Force. It would also explain why the lightsaber snaps in two when they both try to gain control of it. The Reddit user goes one step further, however, advancing an incredible theory by way of this revelatory moment.
Yes, incredibly, SprehdTehWerdEDM believes that this moment in the film is symbolic of a much greater truth: that neither Rey nor Kylo Ren will ever be able to defeat each another. And the suggestion certainly paints the epic set piece in a new light.
The Reddit contributor elaborated further, though. Specifically, they picked up on past duels between the two foes and why Rey was able to emerge victorious against Kylo Ren in the preceding Star Wars installment. SprehdTehWerdEDM stated, “Rey does defeat Kylo in [The Force Awakens], but he was badly wounded in that battle – therefore not at his fullest potential.”
But as is the case with many theories floated on the internet, there were naysayers who sought to disprove this hypothesis. And one such critic responded on the Reddit thread, arguing, “They’re only really equal when directly opposing each other. In the fight with the guards, Kylo is clearly more powerful. He’s the one who figures out what’s going on with their Force connection [and] he’s able to manipulate her through it.”
Another Reddit user claimed, “I think the destruction of the lightsaber means that although there’s balance between light and dark, there’ll always be suffering in that constant pull between them.” This forms a different but just as credible reading of the intensely exciting scene in Snoke’s throne room.
However, many other Reddit users concurred with SprehdTehWerdEDM’s theory. One supporter added to the debate, writing, “This post made me appreciate a scene that I initially hated in [The Force Awakens]. Is that the reason the ground split them apart at the end of their duel in the forest? This is now canon to me, and J.J. [Abrams] can’t convince me otherwise!”
Another commenter seemingly agreed with SprehdTehWerdEDM’s assumption, saying, “Purely in terms of their access to the Force, yeah, I think their powers are equaled.” It’s also worth noting, though, that this isn’t the only hypothesis to emerge on The Last Jedi. In fact, there have been several other ideas floated regarding the meaning of moments in the movie…
One widely reported theory suggested, for instance, that the “Force-bridge” that connects Rey and Kylo Ren courtesy of Snoke is not going to break – despite the fact that Snoke dies in The Last Jedi. Angie Dahl believes in this argument, for which she has cited the pair’s strong connection prior to Snoke’s involvement. In a contribution to Comic Book Resources, Dahl wrote, “[Rey and Kylo Ren] are the balance of each other, which means they will always be drawn to one another. It sounds cheesy, but they ‘complete’ each other in a way.”
But perhaps the most prevalent theory regarding Rey and Kylo Ren is one that predicts a romantic involvement between the two characters in the next Star Wars episode. This thinking claims that Kylo Ren has secretly fallen for Rey’s abilities and courage. And adherents point to the fact that, in a rare move, the dark one removed his helmet to speak to her.
Regardless, Daisy Ridley has been dismissive of fans’ Star Wars theories about her character. In particular, Screen Rant spoke to the actress in 2017 about the idea that Rey had been a virgin birth. To this, Ridley said, though, “I mean, I’ve read fan theories about [Rey’s] immaculate conception. In fact, that was only one that I read because someone directed me toward it. And I was like ‘You should get to work.’” However, even Ridley is not sure about what will happen to the heroine next.
On the subject of Rey’s future adventures in the same interview, the English actress said, “I don’t know. I don’t know. I think the wonderful thing about lives is they are ever-continuing, ever-present, ever-growing. And, I think the end of this film, really… Episode IX could go anywhere.”
It remains to be seen, then, what surprises the ninth installment of the Star Wars saga has in hold. Slated for release in December 2019, the film will see director J.J. Abrams back at the helm once more. The man who directed The Force Awakens took over the next Star Wars project from Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow in September 2017.
But whatever the forthcoming blockbuster is named – Kylo Ren and Rey: The Romance Awakens? – it will be the final movie in the sequel trilogy. As a consequence, Star Wars fanatics can expect a fair few fireworks to bring proceedings to a close. Also, chances are that the upcoming addition to the Force franchise will answer some of these astonishing fan theories – and put them to bed once and for all.
