It’s no secret that the rich and famous live vastly different lifestyles to us mere mortals, but surely the tradition of a stylish white wedding would appeal to famed and unknown alike. Not so, if these 20 celebrities are anything to go by. Whether it be a gothic nightmare or a Lord of the Rings-inspired ceremony, it seems it’s a case of the crazier the better when it comes to celebrities’ big days.

20. Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries – Black and White Ball

Kim Kardashian and NBA star Kris Humphries’ $10 million wedding back in 2011 was an exclusively black and white affair, with every single one of the 400 or so invitees having been instructed to wear only those two colors. Still, the union was short-lived, famously coming to an abrupt end 72 days later.

19. A. J. McLean and Rochelle DeAnna Karidis – Gothic

In December 2011 the Backstreet Boys’ A. J. McLean married Rochelle DeAnna Karidis in a gothic-style wedding at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The wedding invitations were decorated with fake blood, and Karidis ambled to her groom to the sounds of Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain.”

18. Katy Perry and Russell Brand – Exotic Indian

Katy Perry and Russell Brand enjoyed a classic – if extravagant – Hindu ceremony, with the entire event involving elephants, horses and, apparently, a clairvoyant parrot. The marriage took place in India in 2010 at a reported cost of $400,000. However, the couple split 14 months later.

17. Heidi Klum and Seal – White Trash

Following their 2005 wedding and before their split in 2012, Heidi Klum and Seal reaffirmed their vows every 12 months. What’s more, in 2009 they chose to do so with a “white trash” theme – which included a cornrows-sporting, pregnant Klum and a mulleted Seal. Inevitably, perhaps, “Elvis” conducted the ceremony.

16. David and Victoria Beckham – Woodland Adventures

In 1999 Posh and Becks each said “I do” in Ireland’s Luttrellstown Castle. The soccer icon famously wore a bright white suit for the ceremony, and come cake-cutting time both he and the former Spice Girl had changed into all-purple ensembles to better reflect the woodland theme. There were 230 guests on hand to celebrate the $800,000 union.

15. Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon – Disney

When Mariah Carey renewed her vows to fellow music star Nick Cannon in 2013, she literally closed Disneyland in California for the Disney-themed bash. Indeed, Carey made like Cinderella, wearing a voluminous dress and showing up in a fairytale horse-driven carriage at the Magic Kingdom, with 250 guests in attendance.

14. Sean Parker and Alexandra Lenas – Lord of the Rings

In 2013 entrepreneur Sean Parker wed Alexandra Lenas in California at a Lord of the Rings-themed do that cost a whooping $4.5 million. Invitees sported bespoke outfits created by the movies’ costume designer, and there was a nine-foot-tall wedding cake. Afterward, Parker paid $2.5 million to the California Coastal Commission.

13. Aaron Paul and Lauren Parsekian – The Great Gatsby

When Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul and his partner Lauren Parsekian got married in May 2013, they decided to travel back to the 1920s for a The Great Gatsby-themed day in Malibu. Guests made sure to dress for the occasion by donning top hats and tails, fringed dresses and opera gloves.

12. Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz – Alice in Wonderland

That said, Curry later complained that VH1, the station behind the couple’s My Fair Brady show, ruined the nuptials because “they couldn’t afford [getting] Andrew Lloyd Weber” to be there.
