Your birthday is a time for you to celebrate with your family and friends. And Kim Kardashian’s household is evidently no different, as the reality TV star reached her 38th birthday in October 2018. Yet the inventive and romantic surprise that her husband, Kanye West, sprang on her the day before left Kim stunned.

Kim came into the world on October 21, 1980, and grew up in Beverly Hills, California, alongside her three siblings Khloe, Kourtney and Robert Jr. And from a young age, the trio enjoyed a life of privilege, thanks to their parents’ successful careers. Indeed, father Robert was a distinguished lawyer, while their mother, Kris, once owned a boutique store.

Alongside his legal work, Robert also launched a marketing and music company named Movie Tunes, Inc. And when he passed away in October 2003, his four children inherited the business. In fact, Kim was employed at the company during her time at high school, but she and her siblings eventually sold it.

Despite their family’s vast wealth, though, the Kardashian children were expected to earn their own money once they turned 18. So Kim started working as a wardrobe stylist before creating her own company named Kimsaprincess Productions. Her business ventures didn’t end there, though.

Kim also founded the D-A-S-H boutique store in 2006 alongside her sisters Khloé and Kourtney. Operating out of Calabasas, California, the business grew in stature as time went on and opened additional stores across the country. In the spring of 2018, however, the trio confirmed that the chain was closing down.

On the personal side, Kim’s life changed forever in 2007. This was when a 2003 sex tape involving her and her then-boyfriend Ray J was released. The infamous video subsequently threw the socialite into the public spotlight and led to her rise as a celebrity. Later that year, for instance, she landed a starring role in her own reality TV show.

Yes, in October 2007, Keeping Up With The Kardashians debuted on the E! Network, cementing Kim’s place as a television star. Since then, the show has run for 15 seasons and spawned a number of spin-offs starring other members of her family.

As a consequence of her fame and fortune, though, various aspects of Kim’s life have been placed under the microscope. Her romantic relationships in particular have attracted a lot of public scrutiny. For instance, much has been made about the reality TV star’s four-year marriage to her first husband, Damon Thomas.

And after that, Kim embarked on relationships with a series of celebrity partners, including footballer Reggie Bush and music star Nick Lachey. Then, in August 2011, came her second wedding, this time to basketball player Kris Humphries. Sadly, however, her link-up with the NBA star didn’t last for very long at all.

In fact, just over two months into their marriage, Kim wanted a divorce – although it took until April 2013 for the split to be made official. Prior to that, though, the reality TV star started dating again in 2012. And it was during that period that she formed a relationship with music superstar Kanye West.

Born in June 1977, Kanye spent his early years in Atlanta, Georgia, with his parents, Ray and Donda West. When they divorced, though, he followed his mom to Chicago, Illinois, where he would grow up. Then when he turned ten, Kanye spent a year in China alongside Donda, but his future life really started to take shape upon their return to America.

At that point, Kanye became interested in hip-hop, which led to a bold decision a few years later. After graduating from high school, you see, the aspiring musician earned a place at Chicago’s American Academy of Art. However, he left the school to focus on his music career instead.

So in 2001 Kanye relocated to New York and became a music producer. During that time, he worked with Jay Z, Ludacris, Mos Def, Beyoncé and Alicia Keys. Despite the success that followed, though, the future star wanted to make his own records. But that was easier said than done.

Initially, you see, Kanye couldn’t get anyone to give him a chance in front of the mike. But that all changed in February 2004. And some two years after being signed by the Roc-A-Fella label, he released his debut album, The College Dropout. The record subsequently proved a massive success, selling more than 2.5 million units.

From there, Kanye developed into a global music superstar, with his output scooping more than 20 Grammy awards to date. And following the release of The College Dropout, no fewer than eight of his solo albums have reached the top of the charts. Alongside that incredible success, though, the rapper’s career has been littered with controversial episodes.

During a 2005 telethon for those who were affected by Hurricane Katrina, for instance, Kanye blasted George W. Bush, the president at the time. In a jaw-dropping moment, the superstar claimed that Bush didn’t “care about black people.” And the controversies didn’t end there.

Some four years later, at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift won the Best Female Video gong. As she started to deliver her acceptance speech, however, Kanye stormed the stage and interrupted her. And then he famously declared that Beyoncé was more deserving of the award than Swift.

Despite all that controversy, though, Kanye seemingly found love in April 2012 when he started to date Kim Kardashian. And a few months later, the pair announced that Kim was pregnant. The reality TV star subsequently gave birth to their first child in June 2013, naming her North West.

Kim and Kanye got engaged in October 2013 and scheduled the wedding for some seven months later. Joined in Italy by a host of famous faces on the day, the pair tied the knot in Florence. Now over four years into their marriage, the reality TV star revealed one of the changes in outlook she’s experienced thanks to her husband.

“[My change of perspective] started with Kanye,” Kim told The Alec Baldwin Show in October 2018. “His work life is very public, but then when he was off, he was very private. Everything had to be public for me [before I met Kanye].”

“Now it’s, ‘Where can I go on vacation where nobody will see us?’” Kim continued. “All I want is privacy. I never thought that I would be at that point.” However, while the pair might want a bit of time to themselves away from the glare of the public spotlight, Kanye’s grand declarations of love make that a little difficult.

For example, on Mothering Sunday in 2016 Kanye invited an entire string orchestra into their home, with cameras present to witness the moment. The following year, he then treated Kim to two outsized flower arrangements to celebrate Valentine’s Day and their third wedding anniversary.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, then, Kanye made some big plans for his wife ahead of her 38th birthday in October 2018. And, maybe looking for a way to top his previous treats, the 41-year-old made an inspired choice. Instead of treating Kim on her big day, he apparently decided to do something special 24 hours beforehand.

So as Kim woke up in their California home, a wealth of tropical flowers greeted her in one of the rooms. Alongside the floral displays, feathers and blooms were also hung up high, filling the spacious white room. The surprises didn’t end there for the reality TV star, though.

You see, Kanye had hired a pianist to perform for his wife as well, with the musician sat at a piano in the middle of the room. As North and her younger brother, Saint West, started to jump around in the background, their dad recorded the scene. After that, he then shared the video on his Twitter account.

“@KimKardashian, you’re stunning,” Kanye wrote in the accompanying tweet in October 2018. “I will keep trying to make things that can express how beautiful you are inside and out. And how much I love you and our family.” Unsurprisingly, the grand gesture proved a huge hit on social media.

In fact, Kanye’s heartfelt message earned close to 20,000 likes on Twitter as well as over 3,000 retweets. The tweet also garnered more than 300 comments, with online users hailing the star’s elaborate surprise for his famous wife.

Meanwhile, user KadeMaupin suggested that Kanye’s heartfelt actions were inspiring to his millions of fans. “You are doing God’s work, sir,” he wrote in the comments section. “You have an army of dedicated loyalists behind you, and you couldn’t possibly imagine how much [of] a positive influence you have on so many of us.”

“What a beautiful video!” Marshall wrote in the comments section. “Your love is so wonderful to see between [two] people. It makes you wonder why we all can’t feel that. Or should I say, why we all can’t be that way with our relationships! You show how we should all treat our loved ones. Thanks Kim and Kanye.”

Kim’s reaction to the surprise mirrored most of those comments too. In the video, she walks into the room to see the pianist and the flowers. And much like Kanye, she then starts to film what is in front of her. She later uploaded the clips to her Instagram Stories too.

On one of the videos, Kim included a message about her husband, referencing his previous displays of affection. “Kanye’s the most creative when it comes to sending me flowers for my birthday!” she wrote on Instagram Stories. “Love you so much, babe.”

Alongside that video, Kim captured shots of the pianist in action as well as the flowers and feathers around the room. She actually wasn’t the only Kardashian to watch the surprise unfold, though. As it happened, her sister Khloé witnessed the event, and she later uploaded some videos to her own Instagram Stories too.

Yet while this pre-birthday surprise marked an emotional highlight for Kim and Kanye, 2018 wasn’t without its hardships for the couple. The controversy that the music superstar continues to court reared its head again back in May, for instance. This time, though, it was some inflammatory remarks about slavery on a live TMZ interview that caused a furore.

Kim explained her thoughts on the matter during the filming of the 15th season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. “[Kanye’s] doing good; everyone thinks he’s having a breakdown,” she says in a December 2018 episode. “I rushed home [after the interview], I was hysterically crying.”

“So I go home, [and] he’s totally fine,” she continues. “When he gets ramped up, he can’t control what he says, he can’t let it go. He loves being ramped up. He’s like, ‘I feel powerful when I’m ramped up. I don’t want to be so suppressed. Yeah, I say crazy s***, but I’ve always said crazy s***.’”

Kim then attempts to clarify the point that Kanye had been trying to make during that infamous interview. “I always know what Kanye’s intentions are and what he’s trying to say,” she says. “But I also know that they’re gonna write a headline, and people are gonna assume that that’s exactly what you said and what you meant.”

“[Kanye] didn’t say slavery is a choice. He was saying if you’re gonna still be enslaved for another 400 years then that’s some bull****,” Kim adds. “That, as a wife, is really frustrating to see the media take everything and run with it.” And in a way, those last comments show just as much love as the flowers and music.
