Miley Cyrus Has Broken Her Silence About The Secret Wedding She Shared With Liam Hemsworth

It’s always exciting when two megastars tie the knot! The latest celebs to take the plunge are singer Miley Cyrus and actor Liam Hemsworth. But they did something slightly different – they kept the whole thing secret from the press. Until now. In December 2018, Cyrus took to social media, sharing a series of photos of their wedding. It certainly was adorable. And it’s been a long time coming.

Cyrus and Hemsworth have actually been together for ten years, believe it or not. When they first started out, she was still the wholesome star of the Disney Channel show Hannah Montana. As a teen idol, she was even romantically linked with a few other teen stars during that period, including Nick Jonas.

Cyrus is actually pansexual, and knew she was from a fairly young age. In fact, she came out to her mother, producer Tish Cyrus, at just 14 years old. “I’m very open about it – I’m pansexual,” she told Elle UK magazine in 2015. “I’m 22, I’m going on dates, but I change my style every two weeks, let alone who I’m with.”

The Disney star could have chosen anyone in the world as a romantic partner, but she chose Liam Hemsworth. The two of them met while shooting The Last Song, a movie produced by Cyrus’ mother, in 2009. In the film, they played love interests: her tearaway teenager fell for his handsome volleyball player.

At the time of The Last Song, Hemsworth was just starting out as an actor. He’d had some competition from his brother, Chris, for the role of the superhero Thor, however. In the end, though, Chris got it, and it kick-started his career. But Hemsworth wasn’t far behind. In 2011 he landed a role in The Hunger Games, a massive teen franchise.

After The Last Song, rumors spread that Cyrus and Hemsworth were dating in real life, too. The Disney star, however, decided to keep the whole thing private. “It sucks when your personal life becomes public,” she told Seventeen magazine in 2009. “We’ve decided that any type of relationship that we have, we will always just keep it very D.L [down low]. First and foremost, we are best friends, so that’s what I tell people all the time.”

It soon became clear that the pair indeed had a romantic relationship, but it was a very on-off one. Then, in 2010, after a year of dating, the couple split. An anonymous source informed E! News: “They’re both young. To say they are done forever would be premature, but it’s safe to say for now they are doing their own thing.”

By the next month, though, they seemed to have gotten back together… And then they split up again. It took until March 2011 for things to settle down. By this point, Cyrus was changing her image into something much more adult… And much more controversial. Hannah Montana was gone, and the star’s long hair had become a snappy pixie cut.

Cyrus’ wild behaviour drew criticism, but Hemsworth came to her defence. When the star was filmed talking about her love of weed, her on-off boyfriend wasn’t impressed with whoever shot it. “She’s in a room full of her best friends. And you have one person who comes in there and videos it,” he told Details magazine in February 2012. “The poor girl can’t have one night where she can feel safe in her own world.”

In that same interview, the actor spoke about his relationship with Cyrus. “What happened happened, and we’ve been together two and a half years,” he said. “She makes me really happy. When you start [acting], you want to be professional, but when you’re filming those scenes with someone and pretending to love them, you’re not human if you don’t feel something.”

One month later, in March 2012, the singer was spotted wearing a ring and her fans went wild. Anonymous reports quickly calmed it all down. “A source close to Cyrus confirms to Us Weekly that the sparkler is not an engagement ring,” the magazine announced. And in a tweet from the star at the time, she simply called Hemsworth her “boyfriend.”

And yet shortly afterwards, the couple got engaged for real. Hemsworth had proposed to Cyrus in May and she accepted. Their representatives confirmed the news to the media in June. “I’m so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam,” the star told People magazine. It was exciting an time.

And, yet, it seemed no wedding was actually forthcoming. In April 2013 Billy Ray Cyrus, the star’s famous father, appeared to cast cold water on proceedings. When asked on ABC’s Nightline if the marriage would happen, he said he didn’t know. “They’re young, they’re kids. The great news is they’re great friends,” he offered.

Alas, Billy Ray wasn’t far off the mark. In the latter half of 2013, his daughter started making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Cyrus’ performance at the MTV VMAs saw her partake in an incredibly raunchy routine with Robin Thicke. Then came “Wrecking Ball,” the video for which featured the star naked. In among all the media attention, meanwhile, it was confirmed that the couple had broken up.

“Sources say that the split was ‘[Cyrus]’s decision, after coming to grips with [Hemsworth] being what she believed was less than faithful to her,’” E! News reported on September 16, 2013. And according to an anonymous source, they said, “The actor was in the process of moving out of Cyrus’ Los Angeles home.”

Had Hemsworth really been unfaithful to Cyrus? There were a lot of rumors. Apparently, the actor had been sending romantic texts to fellow thesp January Jones. His representative said there was no truth in that story, but other sources claimed the opposite. The man himself declined to say anything to the media.

In July 2014, Page Six reported that Hemsworth had been overheard talking about his former beau in a restaurant in Italy. “[He] was heard saying he and [Cyrus] would ‘always be best friends,’ and they had ‘an instantaneous and powerful connection,’ they announced. “Our source reports: ‘[He] kept raving about how amazing she was.’”

Cyrus, on the other hand, appeared to rebound with Patrick Schwarzenegger, son of Arnold. She was, in fact, seen kissing him at a football game. However, it proved to be a short-lived relationship. In April 2015 the two broke up, with newspapers alleging that once more a boyfriend had cheated on the popstar. Schwarzenegger later denied it on Twitter.

It took until October 2015 for Hemsworth to speak in public about what had happened with his ex-fiancée. “You fall in love with who you fall in love with; you can never choose. I guess some people just come with a little more baggage,” he told Men’s Fitness magazine. “We were together five years, so I don’t think those feelings will ever change.”

“That’s good, because that proves to me that it was real,” Hemsworth went on. “It wasn’t just a fling. It really was an important part of my life and always will be. She’s a free spirit. I think she’ll always surprise people with what she does, but she’s not a malicious person in any way. She’s a young girl who wants to do what she wants to do.”

And it seemed that Hemsworth and Cyrus were, indeed, remaining friends. They were spotted together in Australia, where the singer reportedly helped her former flame adopt a rescue dog. A romantic reconciliation suddenly seemed to be on the cards – and in January 2016, people noticed that she was wearing her engagement ring again.

“It’s official: Cyrus and Hemsworth’s engagement is back on,” People magazine announced on January 21, 2016. According to “a source close to the singer,” the pair were, in fact, back together. “Cyrus is beyond happy to be engaged to Hemsworth again,” the source said. “It might seem sudden, but they have been very close for the past few months.”

“Cyrus wants to get married,” the anonymous insider told the magazine, before discussing the Hemsworths. “His family was very hesitant about a marriage in the past, but they really got to know [her] better when she spent time in Australia a few weeks ago. Everyone seems excited that they are back together.”

However, it took until May 2016 for either party to confirm that, yes, they were indeed back on. Hemsworth eventually did so in an interview with GQ magazine. “People will figure it out, they already have. They’re not dumb,” he said. And he also spoke about the breakup. “We were going in different directions and it’s just what needed to happen,” he declared.

As for Cyrus, she confirmed the relationship in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres in October 2016. She chatted about the design of her engagement ring and how she would occasionally replace it with something more her style. “I am like, ‘This isn’t really my aesthetic, but I’ll wear it because you love me,’” she said, referring to her beau.

For the next couple of years, the two remained together through thick and thin, even when life suddenly threw them an unpleasant curve-ball. In November 2018 their house in Malibu burned down due to the California wildfires. Though they were unhurt, the blaze completely destroyed their living space.

Hemsworth posted a picture on social media of the ruined house. “It’s been a heartbreaking few days. This is what’s left of my house,” he wrote. “Many people in Malibu and surrounding areas in California have lost their homes also, and my heart goes out to everyone who was affected by these fires.”

The disaster seemed to bring the couple even closer, though. Speaking about the wildfires on her own social media, Cyrus referred to her fiancé as the “love of my life.” And when she appeared on The Howard Stern Show in December 2018, the star called Hemsworth her “survival partner,” and shared what he’d done in the fire. “He was so incredible. He got all the animals out in his truck.”

Finally, not too long after that event, the moment came. Or rather, it turned out it had come and gone already. On December 26, 2018, the couple revealed that they had gotten married over the Christmas weekend. Pictures of the pair at their wedding were posted on Instagram by Cyrus herself.

The star uploaded some photos of the pair in wedding outfits, kissing. The pictures had no captions, but their meaning was obvious. Fans instantly lined up to congratulate Cyrus and her new groom. “I was so heartbroken for you both when you split up. It’s such a blessing that you both came back to each other!” one fan wrote.

The media then hurried to confirm the intimate details. People magazine managed to find out which designer Cyrus had chosen for her wedding dress. It was a Vivenne Westwood gown, it turned out, the brand being one of the star’s favorites. The ivory-colored piece, created from silk satin, sold for about $8,600.

Fans and reporters also poured over some pictures uploaded by Conrad Carr, a surfer and buddy of the couple. It seemed that Hemsworth’s famous brothers, Chris and Luke, were also at the wedding. And not only that, a close inspection of Carr’s Instagram revealed that the three siblings had taken shots off a ski during the party.

The Cyrus family were also present, it seemed. Another of the photos Carr uploaded was of the couple about to cut their wedding cake, and Tish was visible in the shot. Additionally, the star’s sisters both appear to have attended. Noah Cyrus uploaded pictures of “Mr and Mrs” balloons to her social media, and Brandi Cyrus made a special post for the pair.

“Secret’s out!” Brandi wrote over one of Cyrus’ shots of the wedding. “So happy for you guys! Been a long time comin’. Love you both.” And of course, the star’s father, Billy Ray, was also in attendance. He, too, made a social media post congratulating the couple, writing “Long live love!” on his Facebook page.

“[Cyrus] and [Hemsworth] couldn’t be happier with how their wedding went over the weekend,” an anonymous source told E! News on December 27. “The two of them have been inundated with congratulatory wishes from friends and family all over the world. A lavish ceremony wasn’t important to [them], all that mattered was that their families could be there.” And, indeed, they were.

Another anonymous source spoke to the Hollywood Life website on the same day. “Despite what some might believe, [Cyrus] is a very private person and a huge, over the top wedding, was never something she envisioned for her wedding day,” they said. “Being surrounded by Christmas lights, the holiday spirit and all of her loved ones was truly everything she could have ever wished for.”

On January 13, 2019, Hemsworth’s birthday, Cyrus posted a message to Instagram about her husband. It was addressed directly to him, and it was, in fact, adorable. “I thought I could share some of my favorite things about my favorite dude in honor of this very special day,” the proclamation read. The list she had created was a long one.

“I love how you always try things your way, but are never too proud to ask for help,” was one of the things Cyrus loved most about Hemsworth. “Yes, I’ve noticed and taken note, I’m a work in progress.” She went on, “I love your dirty socks on the floor because that means you’re home… I love when you introduce me to a new band, so when you’re away I can listen and it feels like you’re here.”

“I even love when you shrink my favorite t-shirt in the dryer – because having a boyfriend (oh em gee, I forgot you’re my friggin’ husband now) that does laundry is pretty much the best thing ever,” Cyrus went on. “I love taking turns and sharing with you, I love how you’ll sit and listen to me pluck out a new tune on the guitar for hours.”

Cyrus’ speech then concluded, “Put simply, I love you. Unconditionally. In our time together you have displayed what it really means to love through all circumstances… I’m proud of the person you have become and look forward to all the good we will contribute together in the future.” Her words were, indeed, truly touching.

As of January 2019, the couple have been married for almost a month. They’re living proof that a relationship can, in fact, overcome all obstacles if you really love the other person. Though they try and remain as private as possible, the details they have shared about their relationship and marriage indicate it’s one which will last.
