Every so often a celeb posts something to Twitter or Instagram that proves to be a massive mistake. Remember when Rihanna posed with an endangered primate in Phuket, Thailand in 2013 and shared her selfie with her 32 million followers? There was outrage – just like there was when these 20 celebs posted equally puerile pics.

20. Julianne Hough

For whatever reason Julianne Hough thought it would be acceptable to black up while dressing as “Crazy Eyes” from Orange Is the New Black during a 2013 Halloween party. The showbiz star posted a pic of her prison look to Instagram, which prompted a public backlash.

19. Madonna and Rocco

Madonna got in trouble when she Instagrammed a picture of her underage son Rocco holding a liquor bottle in 2014. Amid claims that she was supporting underage drinking, the singer later posted a message saying, “No one was drinking we were just having fun! Calm down and get a sense of humor!”

18. Rihanna (again)

Rihanna, no stranger at all to controversy, provoked a lot of people when she posed sultrily outside an Abu Dhabi mosque in 2013. Despite being asked to leave she decided it was okay to post the pictures to Instagram, which local authorities weren’t too impressed by.

17. Geraldo Rivera

Fox News’s Geraldo Rivera landed himself in trouble when he inexplicably posted a half-nude selfie to Twitter in 2013. Pittsburgh’s Duquesne University, which said the image was “inappropriate,” subsequently cancelled a speaking gig with him. Rivera hit back by calling the Catholic institution’s actions “pretentious censorship.”

15. Kylie Jenner

This Instagram selfie Kylie Jenner took of her cornrows in 2015 ended up sparking a debate about cultural appropriation and race relations. Hunger Games star Amandla Stenberg was particularly vocal in her criticism of the reality star.

14. Chris Brown

Chris Brown captioned this 2013 Instagram picture “The way I feel today” – an obvious reference to him feeling crucified the day after being accused of punching Frank Ocean. “I remember all the times Jesus hit women and started fights over parking spaces,” one follower cuttingly commented.

The internet went into meltdown when it discovered this Instagram pic of Willow Smith, then 13, with shirtless actor Moises Arias, then 20, in 2014. Though the pair weren’t actually touching it caused enough furor to be taken down.

12. Ronda Rousey

Fans noticed right away when UFC fighter Ronda Rousey posted a photoshopped image on her Instagram in February 2016 showing a slimmer face and arms. She later said that the photo had been doctored without her permission and that she hadn’t noticed.

11. Rihanna (yet again)

When Rihanna tweeted a photo of herself and her security guard with a mystery powder in 2012 it almost instantly set the internet ablaze. Fans speculated whether it was cocaine or cannabis – as did a number of news outlets.

10. Selena Gomez

In early 2015 Selena Gomez was visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. While inside, Gomez “disrespectfully” revealed her ankle, which is against the mosque’s strict rules, as she posed for this Instagram pic. The online reaction was quick and harsh, and Gomez swiftly deleted the picture.

9. Ashley Benson

When Pretty Little Liars’ Ashley Benson suggested that she had chosen a Cecil the Lion outfit for her 2015 Halloween costume, her fans labeled her original Instagram post about it “offensive.” As a result, Benson edited the post’s caption to say that it was just a generic lion costume.

8. Kim Kardashian

In August 2015 Kim Kardashian was notified by the Food and Drug Administration following one of her Instagram posts. The problem? Kardashian had advertised the morning sickness drug Diclegis without calling attention to the inherent risks of taking the pills. She wisely removed the post from her feed.

7. Khloé Kardashian

Khloé Kardashian, like other stars before her, came under fire for cultural appropriation in 2014. Indeed, this snap – posted by sister Kylie Jenner – of her sporting a Native American headdress ended up getting an overwhelmingly negative backlash from fans and commenters alike.

6. Ryan Reynolds

5. Shaquille O’Neal

In 2014 Shaquille O’Neal found himself in big trouble when, in a video clip posted to Instagram, he mocked a fan’s selfie. Why? Because the man in question, Jahmel Binion, actually has a genetic disorder that affects his appearance – not a cool move, then, for the NBA icon. Could it have become any worse for Shaq after the subsequent media furore? Yes, it could– and did: the fan ended up suing him.

4. Justin Bieber

This is why you should always check the guidebook. Justin Bieber thought that this Instagram snap, posted in 2014, just captured him in front of a random shrine in Tokyo. In fact, though, it turned out to be the hugely controversial Yasukuni Shrine that commemorates, among others, some Japanese war criminals. Fans across the world who did know the significance of the place, then, were understandably not happy at all.

3. Beyoncé

Apparently even Beyoncé, of all people, is not entirely comfortable in her body. In 2014, for example, fans began to notice that she was using more Photoshop than was really necessary in her shots posted to social media. This cheerful picture of her playing golf, for one, has an obviously Photoshopped thigh gap – something that didn’t go unnoticed by some of her over 66 million followers on Instagram.

2. Kim Kardashian (again)

This looks like a completely innocent picture of Kim Kardashian on the surface – well, that is, until you realise she’s cropped her own child out of it. A minor crime, maybe, but commenters still piled on her after the North West-less image was added to the reality star’s Instagram page in 2014. “What kind of mother are you?” wrote one. Ouch.

1. Kris Jenner

When Kris Jenner met Gordon Ramsay in 2014, there was an ever so slight difference between the pictures they subsequently Instagrammed of their meeting. Well, not so slight upon comparison – and we can’t help but wonder how Ramsay’s newly airbrushed visage went down with the notoriously fiery chef… The internet, of course, mocked Jenner’s alterations relentlessly.
