Prince Philip is one of the most well-known members of the British royal family. Born in June 1921, he married Queen Elizabeth II 26 years later and they have been together ever since. Philip was the fifth and final child of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. And the former’s mother in particular led an astonishing life – far removed from many of the entitlements and trappings of royal association.
Of course, royals aren’t immune to tragedy, and Alice saw more than her fair share. But many of the hardships she faced were brought about by remarkable choices and a unique character which saw the princess live a life largely free from pampered privilege.
