As a member of the British royal family, Prince Harry is often in the press. In 2019 there has been speculation about his relationship with his brother, Prince William. But there’s also intense scrutiny in British tabloids surrounding his wife, Meghan Markle. And yet, although the pressure affects Harry’s mental health, he has disclosed the one thing he will always do for his family.
In a documentary shown by UK broadcaster ITV in October 2019, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle opened up about the pressures they face from such overwhelming media interest. Meghan admitted that her friends had tried to persuade her not to marry into the royal family. She said they had told her, “You shouldn’t do it, because the British tabloids will destroy your life.”
Meghan had a difficult time adjusting to life in the royal family, particularly during her pregnancy with her first child with Harry. Motherhood was a big change again, and the preternatural press interest was something for which the duchess wasn’t prepared. And for her husband, there seemed to be echoes of the past and the eventual fate that befell his mom, Diana, Princess of Wales.
As Harry explained, “Part of this job is putting on a brave face but, for me and my wife, there is a lot of stuff that hurts, especially when the majority of it is untrue.” The prince further described how his mental health required “constant management.” However, whatever he goes through, he made clear there was one thing he will always do for his family.
Harry declared, “I will always protect my family, and now I have a family to protect.” Drawing parallels to his mom, the prince added, “So everything that [my mother] went through, and what happened to her, is incredibly important every single day. And that is not me being paranoid, that is just me not wanting a repeat of the past.”
