The lives and loves of the rich and famous fill up gossip columns and tabloid pages at a mind-boggling rate, and thanks to the wonderful world of social media, celebrities themselves seemingly offer frequent glimpses into their everyday existences. That said, not all of our favorite A-listers are as clean-cut – or, conversely, as hard-edged – as they may appear in public. These 20 stars, for example, are very different when the cameras stop rolling.

20. Victoria Beckham
Victoria Beckham isn’t quite the grim-faced “ice queen” many would have us believe. Indeed, her charity work over the years has been so extensive that in 2014 she was handed the Global Gift Gala’s Philanthropeneur Award for her commendable efforts.
In 2013 Beyoncé thrilled 750 Walmart shoppers by giving each of them $50. Earlier that year, however, a purportedly leaked copy of the singer’s tour rider showed her real-life diva demands, which included having access to bespoke orbs of ice and red toilet paper.
18. Katherine Heigl
She may look like your all-American girl next door, but apparently Katherine Heigl is extremely difficult behind the scenes. According to a 2011 Star magazine report, the actress even once received a firm telling-off from Sofia Vergara for her behavior on the set of New Year’s Eve.
17. Teri Hatcher
Award-winning actress and one-time Lois Lane Teri Hatcher was supposedly labeled “the meanest woman in the world” by Desperate Housewives colleague Nicollette Sheridan. Hatcher was also excluded from a leaving present given to the show’s cast by the crew.
16. Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston may have the world at her feet, but in 2013 RadarOnline reported that the crew of Life of Crime were less than impressed by her. Apparently, she was “not approachable” and opted to eat lunch alone.
15. Lea Michele
Lea Michele found fame on Glee as the ambitious Rachel Berry, though it seems that in real life Michele is more of a prima donna than you might expect. Indeed, Hollywood star Kate Hudson thought she was a “total diva” and a “nightmare” to work with.
14. Shannen Doherty
In the ’90s Shannen Doherty of course played likable Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hill, 90210. However, she was revealed to be anything but when she was let go for being a nuisance. Co-star Ian Ziering told Entertainment Weekly that she lacked “professionalism.”
13. Lady GaGa
On stage Lady GaGa seems unapproachable and maybe just a little unhinged, yet in real life the singer has established a charity, called the Born This Way Foundation, which is dedicated to “empowering youth” and “inspiring bravery.”
12. Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera successfully judged four seasons of mega-hit The Voice, but the singer didn’t leave everybody with a good impression. When The Wanted worked with her, for instance, Tom Parker told 92.3 NOW FM that Aguilera “didn’t speak to [them].”
11. January Jones
Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner has called January Jones “a little bit shy,” though not everybody agrees. Jones’ former on-screen son Jared Gilmore told TV Guide that she was “not as approachable as the others,” while Zach Galifianakis has called her out as “rude.”
10. Shenae Grimes
Shenae Grimes was the good girl lead of 90210 when gossip column “Page Six” alleged that the star was “rude to the cast, crew and extras.” Perhaps she was suffering from the curse of Shannen Doherty.

The title of Rihanna’s third album – Good Girl Gone Bad – sums up her behind-closed-doors reputation. In 2012 producer Labrinth implied to the Daily Record that she was “difficult,” while a leaked ten-page rider in 2013 revealed several diva-ish demands.
8. Rachel McAdams
Mean Girls director Mark Waters told Vulture that before being cast in the film rom-com star Rachel McAdams would “come in the room and not talk to Lindsay [Lohan].” What’s more, McAdams’ The Notebook co-star Ryan Gosling tried to have her fired.

7. Taylor Momsen
Taylor Momsen first found fame as sweet-faced Cindy Lou Who in The Grinch and Jenny Humphrey in Gossip Girl. But what’s she like behind the scenes? Well, Tim Gunn guest-starred in the latter with Momsen in 2010 and told E! News that Momsen was a “brat” and “a diva.”
6. Kristen Stewart
It’s probably fair to say that Kristen Stewart seems somewhat emotionless at public appearances. However, Stewart has previously donated a famous dress to raise money for Hurricane Sandy victims and gifted signed footwear to Shoe Revolt, an organization that helps victims of sex trafficking.
5. Ellen DeGeneres
Everyone loves Ellen DeGeneres, right? Well, not one former co-worker on The Ellen Show, apparently. The blogger, known as “Surgical Strikes,” claimed that DeGeneres would often “glare at the writers” and ask, “‘Why do you keep writing these unfunny jokes?’”
In 2011 apparently down-to-earth Adele’s leaked tour demands showed that only a dozen bottles of “best quality European lager” – as well as a selection of “bite-size chocolate bars” – were acceptable for her. Not quite at Beyoncé’s level, then, but it’s a start.

3. Ashlee Simpson
After Jessica Simpson’s little sister Ashlee was dropped from Melrose Place, someone told Fox411 that she was “a total diva” who “created a lot of discord among the cast.” The source added that Simpson was “deeply disliked by fellow cast members.”

2. Katy Perry
Pop icon Katy Perry promotes empowerment – but some of her demands take things a bit far. For instance, Perry’s drivers are apparently forbidden from talking to the singer, and she has previously only stood for dressing rooms in certain colors.
1. Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow comes across as a professional in her work, but such an impression doesn’t always ring true. In an interview she once accused Reese Witherspoon of doing “stupid romantic comedies” for “money and status,” while she supposedly blanked Iron Man 2 co-star Scarlett Johansson throughout filming.
