For many people, Ashton Kutcher is considered to be one of Hollywood’s heartthrobs. With his chiseled jawline, deep brown eyes and charming smile, the actor is perhaps as conventionally good looking as they come. So it may come as a surprise to some fans to learn that Kutcher is actually hiding a rather odd physical abnormality.
Kutcher started out on his career as a model, in fact. And after entering a competition run by the International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA) in 1998, the native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, bagged gigs with Calvin Klein and hit catwalks in Europe. However, he was soon drawn to the bright lights of Hollywood.
Following a move to Los Angeles, Kutcher won a role on That ’70s Show, playing Michael Kelso. The part would make Kutcher a star and introduce him to his future wife, Mila Kunis. And after eight years on the series, Kutcher had started to establish himself as a movie star, appearing in films such as Dude, Where’s My Car?, Cheaper By The Dozen and The Butterfly Effect.
Furthermore, in the early 2000s Kutcher fronted the MTV series Punk’d , which he also produced, in addition to his role on That ‘70s Show. During this time, Kutcher served as a producer on a handful of other reality shows, including The Real Wedding Crashers and Beauty and the Geek. So, Kutcher was proving himself to be a multifaceted entertainer.
Following Kutcher’s exit from That ’70s Show in 2006, the actor starred in a number of rom-coms such as No Strings Attached and What Happens in Vegas. And what arguably became Kutcher’s most prominent role was handed to him in 2011, when it was announced that he’d be taking the place of Charlie Sheen on the hit comedy show Two and a Half Men.
Moreover, to say that Kutcher’s debut on Two and a Half Men was highly anticipated would be an understatement. In fact, close to 29 million viewers tuned in to watch Kutcher’s first episode on the show in September 2011. And those ratings reportedly exceeded the audience numbers of any episode in the show’s eight prior series with Sheen at the helm.
Two and a Half Men proved to be a big earner for Kutcher. He’d started out on a single-year contract that reportedly guaranteed him close to $20 million. And it was later reported that Kutcher earned a cool $750,000 per episode. Moreover, given that Kutcher isn’t your average superstar, he decided to use his fortune wisely.
Outside of his acting career, in fact, Kutcher has dipped his toe into the world of venture capital. He’s notably invested in a number of tech start-ups, including well-known companies such as Airbnb, Foursquare and Skype. In total, Kutcher is believed to have investments in 60 or so firms.
Kutcher’s time on Two and a Half Men eventually came to an end in February 2015, when the comedy aired for a final time. Since 2016 the actor has appeared on The Ranch, a Netflix series that details the life of a small-town Colorado family. The show is due to finish its run in 2020.
Time will tell where Kutcher takes his career when his time on The Ranch is over. But even if he decides to take some time off from acting, he has plenty to keep him busy at home. That’s because Kutcher has been married to his That ’70s Show co-star Kunis since 2015, and together they have two young children, Dimitri and Wyatt.
While Kutcher currently has a lot to keep him busy – what with his acting and investment commitments – for him family seemingly comes first. According to Inc., while speaking at Third Annual City Summit in 2018, the actor explained, “I schedule my time with my kids… I make those blocks, hard and fast in my calendar, and I don’t move them. I come home, I put my phone away, I don’t work when I’m with my kids. And when I go to sleep, I don’t take my phone. I’m really, really diligent.”
Aside from the odd nod to family life in their interviews, though, Kutcher and Kunis are eager to raise their children out of the spotlight. As such, they take their son and daughter’s privacy very seriously indeed. Speaking on the Thrive Global podcast in 2017, Kutcher said, “My wife and I have chosen a career where we’re in the public light, but my kids have not.”
Explaining why he felt so strongly about his children’s privacy, Kutcher continued, “I think they should have the right to choose that. And I actually don’t think that they should have images of them as children that are out there, that somebody could potentially blackmail them with. It’s their private life; it’s not mine to give away.”
While Kutcher is fiercely protective of his children, there are other aspects of his life that the actor seems more than willing to share with the world. In fact, he has a particularly no-holds-barred approach to revealing the weirder aspects of his personality. And he’s even divulged on one freaky bodily abnormality that he can lay claim to.
One of the most bizarre admissions Kutcher has made came when he opened up about his divorce from his first wife Demi Moore on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast in 2018. Kutcher was married to the actress for six years between 2005 and 2011. However, they divorced in 2013, and Kutcher dealt with the split in a rather unusual way.
During his appearance on Armchair Expert, Kutcher revealed to Shepard, “Right after I got divorced, I went to the mountains for a week by myself.” But his trip wasn’t intended as a relaxing retreat. Instead, Kutcher went in search of some emotional healing. And his quest for fulfillment wouldn’t be easy.
“I went into Big Sky in Montana, and I did no food, no drink – just water and tea,” Kutcher explained. “I took all my computers away, my phone, my everything… I just had a notepad and a pen and water and tea for a week. I started to hallucinate on day two, which was fantastic… It was pretty wonderful.”
And while it was already pretty weird that Kutcher seemed to take some sort of enjoyment out of starving himself to the point of hallucination, his story became even stranger. That’s because the actor used his time in the wilderness to revisit some of his former relationships.
“I wrote down every single relationship that I had where I felt like there was some grudge or some anything,” Kutcher recalled. “And then I wrote letters to every single person and sent the letters on day [seven]. I typed them all out and sent them. It was almost like an AA exercise, where I was like, ‘I probably have done some damage.’ So I just cleared [my] palate.”
And that’s not the only eyebrow-raising anecdote that Kutcher has told over the years. Another story that the actor has recited concerns how romance first blossomed between himself and Kunis. However, the way in which they got together was far from the fairytale courtship that you may expect.
In fact, it seems that Kutcher and Kunis bonded romantically over their shared love of cigarette smoke. While the pair had known each other for years, it wasn’t until Kutcher invited Kunis to a party at his home that they realized they had eyes for another. And strangely, it was tobacco that brought them together.
Recalling how he and Kunis’ romance had developed, in 2017 Kutcher revealed to Howard Stern, “I was still a smoker, and she had quit smoking… She wanted me to, like, shotgun cigarette smoke into her mouth so she could breathe it in. Gradually through the night, it got closer and closer and closer.”
But while spiritual awakenings in the mountains and a romance forged under the haze of cigarette smoke may seem like odd confessions to make, they’re still not Kutcher’s weirdest admission to date. That came in back in 2008 when the actor appeared on the U.K.’s The Jonathan Ross Show.
While being interviewed on the British chat show, Kutcher made a surprising confession about a bodily abnormality that he sported. And showing that he clearly wasn’t shy when it came to this physical quirk, he even went so far as to show host Jonathan Ross exactly what he was talking about.
A clip of the 2008 episode of the The Jonathan Ross Show that Ashton appeared on can be found on YouTube. And the actor makes his admission after learning that fellow guest Russell Brand is wearing flip flops. “If I’d have known we didn’t have to wear shoes on this show, I wouldn’t have,” Kushton complains.
At that point, Ross decides to probe Kushton about a rumor he’s seemingly heard about the actor’s physical appearance. The host says, “You say that, but I hear you’ve got some weird, freaky-deaky thing going on with your feet.” And it’s then that Kutcher decides to come clean about his body abnormality.
In reply to Ross, Kutcher says, “It’s not freaky-deaky – I have connected toes.” And when the host points out that such a quirk is pretty unusual, the actor protests, “They’re slightly webbed!” Joking, he then points out, “When everything else is this good looking, something’s got to be messed up.”
Agreeing with Kutcher’s reasoning, Ross adds, “It’s karmic balance,” and the pair share a jovial high-five. That isn’t the last that we hear of Kutcher’s webbed toes, though, because before long the host is hinting that he wants to see them. At first, the actor seems a little reluctant, but he’s soon swayed.
Acting coy, Kutcher first bats off Ross’ request, telling him, “I don’t know if I’ve showered.” Nonetheless, he’s soon pulling off a shoe and sock to reveal his bare right foot. As he does so, Ross pulls out a Swiss Army knife, much to the alarm of his guest. The host reassures him, “I’m not going to touch it, but I’ve got my Swiss Army knife with tweezers.”
As Kutcher pulls apart his second and third toe, he explains, “So, it’s these two toes [that are webbed].” With his foot resting on Ross’ desk, the host gets an eyeful of the abnormality, and gives out a bellow in shock when he sees the toes, which Kutcher points out are joined “not all the way, but just halfway down.”
As Ross eyes up Kutcher’s webbed toes, the host tells his guest, “Hang on, I can help you.” With that, he selects the scissors from his Swiss Army knife and comes towards the actor purposefully. Kutcher seems game for a bit of D.I.Y. surgery, so he tells Ross, “Let’s do it. Let’s do it live on TV. Let’s just cut it.”
Prompting encouragement from the studio audience, Ross asks, “Shall I do it ladies and gentlemen?” Spurred on by their cheers, the host looks as though he is about to cut Kutcher’s flesh to separate his two webbed toes. However, after coming within touching distance of the actor’s foot, he pulls away at the last moment.
But it seems that Ross won’t be deterred from his endeavor to separate Kutcher’s webbed toes. As a result, he comes towards the Two and a Half Men star, brandishing his scissors once again. As he moves in, Ross warns Kutcher, “Okay, here we go, I’m going to do it. Okay. I’m actually going to do it.”
And for a second, it does appear that Ross really will free Kutcher from his webbed toes. However, just as the blades of the scissors make contact with Kutcher’s flesh, the actor pulls his foot away before the host has a chance to make his incision. And as he seemingly slips his foot back into his shoe, Kutcher decides, “I’m not going to do it.”
With that, the clip of Kutcher’s appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show comes to an end. And it’s since clocked up close to a quarter of a million views on YouTube, as well as attracting a large number of comments – some of them from people who also had webbed toes, just like Kutcher.
One such message read, “I have webbed foots (sic) too and that’s what makes us special guys!! I just realized that I don’t want to go to the pool because of my webbed toes. But hey, now I realize that’s what makes us unique from others!” Another viewer wrote, “I have twin toes on the left and right foot but they go way higher up. They are so cute.”
Webbed toes such as the ones that Kutcher displayed on The Jonathan Ross Show are caused by a condition known as syndactyly. It’s thought to be quite rare in humans, in fact, affecting one in 2,000 or so infants. And, as it had with Kutcher, it’s seen most frequently between the second and third toes.
Moreover, Kutcher isn’t the only famous name to be affected by syndactyly. Actor Dan Aykroyd of Blues Brothers fame is also known to have webbed toes, for example. And just like Kutcher, Aykroyd has made no attempt to hide his abnormality, baring his feet in both a Saturday Night Live skit and in the film Mr. Mike’s Mondo Video.
Furthermore, Aykroyd opened up about his webbed toes in a 2013 interview with the Daily Mail. In it, he revealed, “I was born with heterochromia iridum – different colored eyes, one green, one blue. I also have syndactyly, where two or more digits are fused. I have two toes on each foot webbed almost to the top.”
Another prominent person who was believed to have webbed toes was the former leader of the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin. Apparently, his syndactyly affected his left foot. And webbed feet wasn’t the only physical quirk that the communist leader had – his left arm was also shorter than his right due to a childhood injury.
