20 Celebrities Who Are Barking Mad About Dogs

There is one great leveler when it comes to fame and fortune – or a lack of it: dogs. Dogs don’t care how many albums you’ve sold or how many people went to see your movie. They don’t care how beautiful you are or how much money you have in the bank. They just want to be loved – and here are 20 celebrities who love them to the moon and back.

20. Miley Cyrus

She may be most famous for twerking, sticking out her tongue, eschewing clothes and occasionally singing, but Miley Cyrus also finds time in her busy schedule to help animal charities. What’s more, Cyrus has further proved her love of canines by adopting numerous rescue dogs, including an English bulldog, a sheepdog and a Yorkie mix.

19. Ryan Gosling

Sorry, Eva Mendes, but it’s Ryan Gosling’s dog George whom the actor has deemed “the great love of [his] life.” The pooch has received special permission from authorities to travel with his heartthrob owner, and on the few occasions when the pair are apart, it’s even rumored that Gosling Skypes his canine chum.

18. Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey is no stranger to showing her caring side, so it’s perhaps no surprise that she treats her dogs very well indeed. Winfrey’s late cocker spaniel Solomon, it’s worth noting, even became a mainstay on her talk show. And the advocate of pet adoption has practiced what she preaches by taking home spaniel Sadie – one of her current brood of five canines – from a shelter in 2009.

17. Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore once said, “Babies and puppies, there is no more blissful thing.” It stands to reason that she’s a bit of a dog lover, then; and if his protective behavior is anything to go by, it seems that one of her two adopted mutts feels the same way about the actress’ daughter Olive. “[Douglas is] literally sitting, looking out the window in a guard dog position,” Barrymore told People in 2012.

16. Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy found dog Woody loose on a highway in Atlanta when working on 2012 film Lawless and took his new pal back to his London home. The pair have since starred in a PETA campaign poster together, and Woody recently stole the show and numerous hearts at a Legend premiere when he made a lunge for a pigeon on the red carpet. Hardy by name but big softy when it comes to dogs, then.

15. Ian Somerhalder

Rather adorably, Ian Somerhalder won the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ Dog’s Best Friend award at the World Dog Awards in January 2015. The Vampire Diaries actor was acknowledged for setting up the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, a charity aiming to stop animal cruelty and promote pet adoption.

14. Mark Zuckerberg

It’s perhaps understandable that the CEO of Facebook’s dog would have his very own page on the social network. Named Beast, Mark Zuckerberg’s canine companion is a Puli – a type of Hungarian sheepdog which closely resembles a mop. Beast’s own Facebook profile reveals more: he likes cuddles and “herding things,” apparently.

13. Hugh Jackman

With a heart seemingly as big as his Wolverine claws, Hugh Jackman is often seen doting on his two furry pals, Dali and Allegra. The Aussie actor Skypes them when he’s away and even wrapped them up snugly in coats and boots for this snowy New York walk in January 2015.

12. Kaley Cuoco

As Kaley Cuoco told Animal Fair in 2014, “A few years ago… all of a sudden, I woke up and realized that I have to rescue dogs.” The Big Bang Theory actress snuck her first adoptee into the family home when she was just 16, has since rescued many more and even turned her previously disapproving mother into an animal rescue supporter.

11. Johnny Depp

In May 2015 the Australian authorities discovered that Johnny Depp had illegally brought his dogs Boo and Pistol Down Under with him, and strict quarantine laws led to the pooches being issued with a would-be death warrant – unless they left the country immediately. After an emotional farewell, then, the actor spared no expense and had them flown back to the U.S. by private jet while he continued filming the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Now that’s a man who loves his dogs.

10. Simon Cowell

He may be a ruff X Factor judge, but Simon Cowell is soft for his Yorkies, Squiddly and Diddly. So much so, in fact, that when the PETA supporter told fans that he was getting mini crash helmets intended to shield his beloved pooches from attacks by seagulls, nobody was quite sure if he was joking or not.

9. Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais is never short of things to say on the subject of animals. As well as regularly sharing hilarious pictures and videos of animals on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, though, the British comedian regularly takes a more serious tone to raise awareness of animal rights. How? By posting passionate takedowns of incidences of animal cruelty around the world, such as the Yulin Dog Meat festival in China.

8. Blake Lively

Gossip Girl star Blake Lively prefers a low-key celebrity lifestyle – and one, moreover, with plenty of canines in it. Rather than hitting the Hollywood party circuit, then, she’s more often seen doting on her dog Penny or out walking husband Ryan Reynolds’ mutt Baxter. Bless.

7. Charlize Theron

With the actress having grown up on a farm in South Africa, it’s probably only natural that Charlize Theron is a huge animal lover. “We had tons of animals, mostly strays,” she told Animal Fair in 2012. Three years later, the actress even revealed to W Magazine that she loves her canine companions as much as she does her son, explaining, “They’re all my children. I know people get weirded out when people talk that way about their animals, but love is love.”

6. Ben Affleck

In the spring of 2015 Ben Affleck and his kids paid a visit to a Pacific Palisades dog shelter. What’s more, the result of the family outing was a new addition to the fold in this adorable golden retriever puppy, which joined German shepherd Hutch and Labrador retriever Martha Stewart – no, really – as part of the family.

5. Hilary Duff

It isn’t only her own French bulldog Beau with whom Hilary Duff is enamored. In January 2015 the singer and actress joined an appeal for the return of arguably Hollywood’s most famous dog. Yes, she begged her Twitter followers to join the search for white Maltese Charlie, who had gone missing from his owner’s clothing store.

4. Jessica Alba

Another of Hollywood’s animal advocates is Jessica Alba, who works with pet rescue charity The Rescue Train. The actress also can’t be without her dogs Sid and Bowie, who receive A-list treatment wherever they go, including staying in the finest hotels and being able to play around on set.

3. Lady Gaga

Miss Asia Kinney is one dog who is, ironically, a star of the catwalk. The pampered pooch belongs to Lady Gaga, and when the canine isn’t enjoying massages and chauffeured car rides or entertaining her 189,000 Instagram followers, she is modeling for luxury bag maker Coach. It’s a dog’s life, eh?

2. Britney Spears

It’s good to be Britney Spears’ dogs, as the celeb’s mollycoddled mutts had a whopping $31,000 spent on them in 2014. Yorkie Hannah in particular is taking her own slice of the fame pie and has a Twitter account – @hannahspears – which boasts more than 57,000 followers.

1. Selena Gomez

It seems that Selena Gomez can’t help herself when it comes to stray dogs. By the age of 18 she had already taken in five homeless pooches – increasing to six in 2012. The singer and actress is, then, truly a dog’s best friend.
