Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot in December 2018 during a three-day extravaganza worthy of any fairytale. Honoring both of their cultures, the Indian actress and the American recording artist exchanged vows in two different ceremonies in India. And some of the photographs they’ve shared from their opulent nuptials will take your breath away.
The couple’s wedding preparations were something of a whirlwind, as they only became engaged a few months before tying the knot in December 2018. The singer and the former Miss World both had high-profile relationships in the past, with Chopra romantically linked to a couple of fellow actors and Jonas once stepping out with Miley Cyrus.
But neither had found their Mr or Mrs Right until they came to each other’s attention back in 2016. Though they didn’t know it then, their journey to happily ever after had begun. The pair exchanged a few texts, but the messages didn’t amount to much. And while they met in person at a Vanity Fair party in early 2017, lightning was still yet to strike.
Things might have fizzled out entirely between Jonas and Chopra, in fact, had it not been for a chance meeting in 2017. Designer Ralph Lauren invited both of them to attend the Met Gala – one of the biggest and glitziest nights of the year in fashion circles – in his clothes. He apparently had no idea that the pair had previously exchanged some texts but evidently thought they’d both be perfect to display his designs on the red carpet.
Chopra, 36, and Jonas, formerly part of the Jonas Brothers, attended the glamorous event together in May 2017 and made a stunning couple. Nonetheless, both were busy with their own careers, and they went their separate ways after the ball. “Our lives were kind of taking us to different places and the thing is that was funny is people would ask us, both in interview settings and in private, ‘Are you guys seeing each other?’” Jonas told Jimmy Fallon in September 2018. “And the answer was no.”
However, it seems they had made an impression on each other after all. Because when they met a year later – strangely enough, at the Met Gala again – a spark was there. Jonas, 26, and Chopra are thought to have got talking at the ball then stayed in touch and started dating afterwards. As romance blossomed in private, the pair kept things low key in public and initially didn’t make any big statements or announcements about their relationship.
Little tidbits about their blossoming relationship did make their way out into the open, however. Not long after the Met Gala, in fact, a video clip uploaded to Twitter showed the stars enjoying a sports game together. And another pic on social media showed Jonas and the Quantico actress snuggled under a blanket on a boat.
Things progressed and both appeared on each other’s Instagram accounts in June 2018. Jonas uploaded a video of Chopra to his, seemingly giving away his feelings by adding a hearts-in-eyes emoji. And the actress returned the favor by sharing a picture of the “Right Now” singer and another man, thought to be her brother, captioned “my favourite men.”
In July 2018, just two months after Jonas and Chopra were romantically linked, the rumor mill started buzzing about a possible engagement. The couple’s lips were sealed but the American media claimed that the pair were headed down the aisle. U.S. magazine People reported that Jonas popped the question on Chopra’s 36th birthday on July 18. It also reported that the singer had a Tiffany jewelry store in New York shut down so that he could pick out a ring for the actress.
The rumors gathered pace when movie director Ali Abbas Zafar posted a message on Twitter saying that Chopra was no longer appearing in his film Bharat for a “very very special” reason. Zafar tweeted, “She told us in the Nick of time about her decision and we are very happy for her… Team Bharat wishes @priyankachopra loads of love & happiness for life.”
Jonas later spilled the beans about how he had proposed. He told Vogue in a December 2018 interview that he first went down on one knee in 2017, the night he spotted Chopra at the Vanity Fair bash. “You’re real, where have you been all my life?” he asked.
Fast forward a year or so, and Jonas was ready to pop the question for real. He decided to ask Chopra to marry him when they went to Crete to mark her birthday. Jonas told Vogue, “I got down on one knee, again, and I said, ‘Will you make me the happiest man in the world and marry me?’”
“No joke, she took about 45 seconds. Forty-five seconds of silence,” Jonas continued. Despite Chopra not saying anything initially, Jonas pushed on and told her, “I’m going to put this ring on your finger now unless you have any objections.”
Once Chopra had said yes, the newly engaged couple got down to planning their big day. In keeping with Chopra’s Hindu heritage, the pair started the official countdown to their wedding with a roka gathering. This pre-wedding ritual marks the engagement of the betrothed couple.
And in August 2018 Chopra and Jonas jetted to Mumbai for the event. The roka was subsequently documented on social media, with photographs showing Chopra and Jonas looking happy and head over heels in love as they marked their union with their nearest and dearest.
In one shot, Chopra and Jonas gazed adoringly into each other’s eyes. “Taken… With all my heart and soul,” Chopra captioned the sweet image. “The only way to do this… with Family and God,” she also told her followers.
Jonas posted snaps from the roka to his own Instagram page as well. In one caption, he referred to Chopra as “Future Mrs Jonas.” “Prayer, family and loved ones as the foundation to this new chapter,” he wrote alongside another of the photographs.
With the roka complete, it was time for the couple to let their hair down at the bride and groom’s separate parties. Chopra’s friends threw her an elegant bridal shower in New York in October 2018, where it was reported that she was dripping with Tiffany jewelry worth a whopping one million dollars. A stunning shot shared on social media showed her dancing in an eye-catching white Marchesa dress, surrounded by friends and family.
“Love, laughter and a room full of amazing ladies… and some special gentlemen (what a special surprise)!” Chopra wrote on Instagram “Thank you so much @mubinarattonsey and @anjula_acharia for throwing me such a memorable bridal shower that broke all the rules! My amazing friends and family who made me feel so special and loved, thank you.”
The important women in Chopra’s life also celebrated with her at a bachelorette bash in the Netherlands in November. This group included the star’s future sister-in-law Sophie Turner, who’s set to wed Jonas’ brother Joe Jonas. They headed to Amsterdam to see in Chopra’s upcoming marriage in style.
Pictures on social media show the ladies on a boat, dressed in red and black on a night out, then relaxing in matching pajamas. One from the day after the bachelorette shenanigans shows a rather sleepy looking Chopra and Game Of Thrones star Turner lounging on a sofa wearing eye masks emblazoned with the word, “Hungover.” “The morning after… #TheJSisters #Bachelorette,” Chopra wrote in the caption.
There was something of a sailing theme to the celebrations, as Jonas also left dry land behind on his bachelor party. The singer posted a picture on Instagram showing him in a sailor’s hat on board a boat, with a bottle of vodka standing in front of him. “Bachelor party weekend is officially underway people,” he wrote.
A second snap showed Jonas in a smart jacket, standing by the ship’s railings. He was clutching a cigar in his hand. “Keep it classy,” the star wrote in the caption that accompanied the image.
The wedding itself kicked off with a Mehendi ceremony. This traditional Indian ritual involves henna being applied to the bride’s hands and feet, in complicated, delicate patterns. A small amount may also be drawn onto the groom for luck.
These henna patterns date back to as early as the 15th century in India. They symbolize the strength of the love between the betrothed couple and are believed to bring good fortune. In addition, it’s thought that the darker the stain of the henna, the more powerful the couple’s union will be.
Chopra and Jonas shared an image from their Mehendi with their followers, which showed both in Indian attire. Jonas wore cream, while Chopra dazzled in a dress of bright yellow, pink and green. “One of the most special things that our relationship has given us is a merging of families who love and respect each other’s faiths and cultures,” she wrote.
“And so planning our wedding with an amalgamation of both was so so amazing,” Chopra continued. “An important part of the pre wedding rituals for the girl in an Indian wedding is the Mehendi. Once again we made it our own and it was an afternoon that kicked off the celebrations in the way we both dreamed.”
Indian actress Parineeti Chopra, one of Chopra’s cousins, gave fans a glimpse inside the couple’s relationship when she welcomed Jonas to the family following the Mehendi. “The job of us bridesmaids was to make sure the bride was happy and comfortable at all times,” she wrote. “But we didn’t have to worry about it – coz Nick promised to do it all his life.”
The festivities continued that night at the Sangeet. This uplifting event is an evening of music and dance that’s both another celebration of the upcoming marriage and a welcome break from the stresses and strains of wedding planning. Sharing a video and several photos from the night, Chopra wrote, “It all began as a fierce song & dance competition between the families but ended, as always, as a huge celebration of love.”
“Nick and I were looking forward to the Sangeet (musical evening), another pre wedding ritual… and to see what each side had put together,” Chopra continued. “And what a performance it was. Each family telling our stories through song and dance, filled with lots of laughter and love.”
“We were both filled with gratitude for the effort, the love and the laughter and will carry the memories of this special evening for the rest of our lives,” Chopra wrote. “It is an amazing start to a lifetime of togetherness for our families and friends… #grateful. What an amazing start to a lifetime!!,” Jonas added in his own Instagram post.
And on the first weekend of December 2018, Chopra and Jonas tied the knot in two magical ceremonies. First, the pair were married in a Christian service at the picturesque Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India. The couple were surrounded by the love and support of the 225 people they’d invited to be with them as they said “I do.”
The day was full of beautiful touches, such as a wedding cake that was more than six feet high and a spectacular firework display over the majestic palace. And one of the loveliest touches was the fact the ceremony was officiated by Jonas’ dad. Paul Kevin Jonas Sr. is a pastor, in fact, and the couple evidently thought he would be the perfect person to pronounce them husband and wife.
Everyone in the bridal party – including the bride and groom – wore Ralph Lauren creations. It was a fitting choice as Lauren had, unknowingly, had a hand in getting the couple together. And the fashion guru posted a message on Twitter saying he was “honored” to have dressed the wedding party.
While all the outfits were stunning, it was Chopra’s gown that stole the show. The glittering, twinkling, form-fitting dress was liberally sprinkled with sequins, Swarovski crystals and floral motifs, and the overall effect was ravishing. According to People magazine, close to 2,000 hours’ work was required for the embroidery alone.
Chopra’s veil was utterly breathtaking. At 75 foot long, it dwarfed even the lengthy 16 foot veil worn by Chopra’s friend Meghan Markle at her own nuptials. The filmy material billowed behind Chopra as she walked up the aisle, and a team of people behind her had to help to carry it.
A day later, Chopra and Jonas committed to each other in a Hindu service. The ceremony typically includes the couple saying their vows by a holy fire and swapping garlands. Embracing his wife’s culture, Jonas wore gold and cream with a matching turban, and Chopra glowed in a red lehenga created by Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee.
Mukherjee said the dress had been embroidered by hand, explaining that “layer upon layer of threadwork embroidery creates this piece of impossible couture.” “110 embroiderers from Calcutta, India took 3720 hours to create this modern masterpiece,” the designer wrote on Instagram. Chopra’s opulent look was completed by wedding jewelry “crafted with uncut diamonds, emeralds and Japanese cultured pearls,” he added.
And it seemed that Chopra was bowled over with the dazzling results. The actress told Hello! magazine, “I always knew I wanted a red traditional silhouette for my wedding, but Sabya brought in incredible French embroidery to the mix, and with incredible jewelry and western-inspired veil. It was just such an amalgamation of who I am!”
As the parties wound down and the sequined gowns were packed away, Mr and Mrs Jonas were left with wonderful memories of their wedding marathon. Chopra told People, “It melted my heart – being able to have two big weddings, in India, with our closest family and friends was unbelievably special.” And, as she captioned one of the pictures, the actress noted that “forever starts now…”
