An Uber Passenger’s Destination Brought The Driver To An Unsettling Realization

The Uber driver and her passenger are merrily singing along to a jam on the car stereo, while they head to an apartment block. But when they get there, it seems a bit familiar. A creeping sense of horror comes over the driver: there's something very strange going on here...

Odd story

Well, when you drive an Uber, you’re going to gather a few odd stories. And generally when something weird happens, you just have to smile and carry on. That’s how you get to be a five-star driver for the service. But sometimes, you get an experience that’s just too bizarre for words, and this one is a doozy.

Pleasant hopes

That’s what happened to Breanna, a young woman who picked up another lady in her late 20s from the airport. In normal circumstances this might have made for a pleasant trip. Two girls sharing a few tunes: an easy few bucks made. But while she drove, Bree got a big surprise. And she shared the whole story with Twitter.

Spidey senses

Now Bree’s not the only Uber driver with a tale. One of her peers told the story of giving two people a ride after a Halloween party. They were dressed as Spider-Man and Batman, said nothing for the whole two-hour ride, and scared the pants off the driver. Then they got out in the middle of nowhere — and paid a $200 tip!

Carried away

And that’s nothing compared to the person who was hired by a couple after a wedding. They were also pretty quiet; at least, they were until the driver realized that their making out had progressed to something more serious. After thinking it through, the driver decided the best thing was to let them get on with it, and they scored a nice tip too!

Poor robbery

Another driver picked up a couple of drunks at three in the morning. One made a crazy request for the driver’s wallet, claiming he’d left his own license in it — and yes, we know that makes no sense. Happily, the driver happened to have an old wallet kicking around the car. So he popped a dollar in it and handed it over. The man grabbed it, took a look, and exclaiming that the driver was remarkably broke, vamoosed!

Mad time

Another Uber driver had a more scary moment, when a drunk threatened him and attempted to carry out a robbery. But his friend paid the fare and told the driver not to worry because the guy was “just crazy”. His buddy talked the would-be felon out of the car and asked the driver not to get the cops involved.

Perfume problem

Less threatening was the passenger who asked if the driver used perfume. The driver said no, but they had some air freshener if that was any use? The passenger demanded that the windows were lowered to “air out the car.” They then doused themselves with essential oils, which stunk out the vehicle for two days afterwards!

Sausage scare

Another drunk shared with their Uber driver all the secrets of making sausage. Apparently, he planned to make it his retirement hustle. So he shared with the driver details of meats and tools and methods. Then he said, “You should never trust someone who knows how to make sausage, you might disappear.” Scary! But far from making sausage meat out of the driver, he handed over a $100 tip and left.

Chauvinist strikes

One female driver did not enjoy picking up a middle-aged man. He straight away said he wanted a new Uber, with a male driver, because he didn’t trust her not to get into an accident. This was particularly upsetting for the driver because she’d driven for more than six years without a single mishap.

“Uber lane”

But the drivers themselves are not always great. One passenger recalled on Reddit that they’d had an Uber driver who simply didn’t want to wait in a queue — so he mounted the sidewalk. He claimed that it was an “Uber lane.” By great luck, he didn’t actually hit any pedestrians.

Getting it backward

But that guy was a genius compared to a woman who took another Redditor for a ride. She moved into a lane where she was driving completely the wrong way — with a flood of cars coming straight towards her. If that wasn’t bad enough, she wasn’t even heading in the right direction: she’d managed to get completely lost.

Nap time?

Still, at least that driver managed to stay awake. What? Yep, another Uber nightmare happened when the driver took an unplanned nap and ran straight into another vehicle in its path. The driver then decided to do a runner, stranding his fare by the side of the road. There was a silver lining though: the doubtless-traumatized passenger reportedly later received $500 in Uber credits.

Wrong passenger

Meanwhile, another Uber customer didn’t even make it to the status of “passenger.” Nope, this one didn’t even get picked up! Their Uber driver gave someone else a ride instead, and when the stranded traveler phoned his missing driver, he simply handed them over to the person who he’d picked up. Reportedly, Uber was not sympathetic this time and refused the user compensation.

Internet sensation

So what kind of driver was Bree? Let’s find out. She was only a part-time Uber driver, but a full-time sensation online. You can find her on Instagram, where she goes by msixelaa and has more than 100,000 followers. Or on Twitter, where nearly 50,000 enjoy her tweets. She also goes by Alexis, but we’ll stick with Bree — or UberBae, and here’s the tale of how she won that name.

New driver

So Bree had been signed up by Uber only a month before. And she told Complex website in 2017, “I had just tried it for the last two days like, on some, ‘Let me see what this is about. I have the app, I’m in the car. Why not? My man’s away. Let me do it.’”

Boyfriend leaves

So Bree’s tale does in fact begin with her man being away. He’d said to her that he was going to travel to New York to see his mom. She was having a stay in hospital. Sounds like a good son, right? So he was all packed, and Bree spent the night at his place before he flew out.

Bags packed

The next morning the two lovers parted. They each got into their respective cars, and for all Bree knew, her guy was on his way out to the airport. After all, he’d put out baggage in the morning. To all intents and purposes he was packed and ready for a trip away to New York.

The pickup

So Bree set off for her stint as an Uber driver. And that took her to the airport too. She was hired by a woman there, who put an apartment complex into the GPS system. The woman was excited, she said. She was going to see her boyfriend, and it had been a long time. Bree sympathized. Her man had, after all, just left on a trip himself.

Heading set

But something weird did strike Bree when the woman entered the address. She had put in the address for the whole complex, but no specific number for the apartment. Oh well, she’d probably give more details when they got nearer. As Bree made her way into town from the airport, she didn’t worry too much about it.

Happy drive

So the two struck up a conversation as they went along. The woman told Bree all about her life, and Bree shared her water that was sitting on the backseat. The Uberbae let her followers know, “I even let her use the aux cord,” so the woman would be choosing the tunes.

Songs soaring

The woman chose plenty of romantic songs, and Bree was just loving them. She could really relate to the tunes, because they made her think about her partner. So Bree was getting down to the music, as she tweeted, “like yasssssss.” It all seemed like a great start to the day, when she’d expected to be lonely.

Familiar complex

Having successfully navigated the city streets, the pair eventually pulled up at the entrance to the apartment complex that the woman had put into Bree’s GPS. And it looked kind of familiar. Bree said to the woman, “My boyfriend lives out here.” Yes, it was the very same complex.

Nearly there

The woman had the number of the apartment building she actually wanted sent to her while Bree sneaked her vehicle into the complex through an open exit gate. So, as Bree tweeted, “She’s like, ‘Okay, I got the number.’ At this point I’m like, ‘Okay.’ We’re counting the building numbers down as we are riding through the buildings.”

Wait a minute!

But as the two women drew near to a building that Bree knew very well, her “stomach start[ed] to drop.” Oh no! And there, right outside of the building is something that shouldn’t be there. It’s her boyfriend’s car. Where was the boyfriend, though? On his way out to help with the bags…

Anger rising

You could say that Bree was a bit upset. She noted on Twitter, “And the Devil rose up out of me like, ‘Are you… [kidding] right now?’” When her boyfriend saw her, he didn’t hang around to explain. He tried to disappear back into the building, but he could not escape the rage of Bree.

The fight is on

Well, Bree proceeded to give her man a hiding that he probably still remembers to this day. Yet the other woman did not just stand and watch: she ran up and started hitting Bree in a sterling defense of “her man.” It’s fair to say that this didn’t meet with Bree’s approval, but it had an upside for UberBae.

Outfit problems

See, the two-timing boyfriend had apparently come out to help the other woman with her luggage. But he hadn’t been able to get there because of the furious Bree, who was battering him. And the woman didn’t seem to be aware. Bree noted on Twitter, “She [was] willing to wear the same outfit for God knows how long to protect her man.”

Crazy talk

The intervention of the other woman didn’t please Bree at all. She rounded on the other lady, and now the target of her rage would change. As for the boyfriend, she tweeted, “[He] just seemed like he was protecting her when trying to break it up, and I’m his girl. Ain’t that crazy? She was talking crazy at this point.”

Run away!

Imagine the scene. The two women are trying to duke it out, while the guy is holding back one of them, not very successfully. But Bree’s not going to stand around and let the other woman slap her about. She heads back toward her car, and although the other woman “charged” at her, she manages to get back behind the wheel.

Hysterical calls

Poor Bree. She explained to Twitter that she’d had enough. She wrote, “At this point my heart hurts; I’m tired. I can’t fight no more, so I’m calling my friends Jazz and Deneka, and I’m hysterical.” And as for Uber? Well, she’d forgotten to end the ride, so her GPS kept telling her to turn back round and finish it!

New luggage

So Bree drove off, perhaps having inherited some new luggage in the process! She considered getting a consignment store to clear it out, but in the end she decided to turn the possessions in to the police. But not before she’d texted photographs of herself posing in the other woman’s eyewear to her boyfriend.

Viral story

The story doesn’t have an unhappy ending, though, although Bree was certainly unhappy to find out her boyfriend had been cheating on her. The internet loved it, giving her the nickname of #UberBae. And the tale went viral, attracting comments from observers, such as, “How many ladies filling out Uber applications after reading about #UberBae?”

Incredible tale

Another Twitter user just couldn’t believe the whole tale, writing, “Nah. How did I miss the #UberBae story? How do you fly your side piece out, and her Uber driver from the airport ends up being your girl?” That’s not quite the end of the story: as Bree revealed to her Twitter fans, “She called the police.”

No cop trouble

UberBae told entertainment website Complex in March 2017, “There is a police report filed. So, what I told them, ’cause she has no proof that I have her things, was ‘I do believe somebody left something in my car when they came to my job,’ and it was a bag. A trash bag, basically, is what I gave them. Her luggage — what luggage?”

Charges not laid

The woman didn’t in the end feel able to press charges, although according to Bree, a complaint was filed with the police. Bree told Complex why there were no charges, saying, “But she can’t press charges against me! She charged at me first. That apartment complex has, like, heavy cameras to see that.”

What are the odds?

Now you might be curious as to why Bree hadn’t suspected something was up earlier. As she later told website Bustle, “I actually felt dumb that I wasn’t asking more questions, but what are the odds of this happening?” One less-than-ideal outcome for Bree was that she no longer had a gig with Uber.

Job lost

The woman gave her a one-star review, and as she told Complex, “I guess they asked her what happened. She filed a complaint against me. She’s supposed to be sending them a police report saying I stole her things and a whole bunch of stuff. So...they said I need to start answering in order to get back on the road to start earning money. They shut me down.”

Support gained

But if Uber wasn’t on Bree’s side in this dispute, lots of other people were. Women who’ve suffered from cheating boyfriends lined up to defend her. She told Bustle, “Everything has been positive. A lot of women have shared their experiences, and I talked to a lot of girls going through the same thing.”

Boyfriend dumped

And what about the boyfriend? Did Bree forgive him and forget all about the incident? Well, she tweeted about that too. She wrote, “By the way, I am single now.” She told website The Daily Beast that she was done with it — and was changing her number! Bree's lucky that her boyfriend showed his true colors before it was too late...

Too late

Bree still had time to run — not everyone is so fortunate. A woman named Chelsea Curnutt probably wished she had been so lucky when she found herself driving 16 hours to her fiancé’s home. Nine months pregnant and desperate, Curnutt was determined to track down the man she thought she knew — Kane Mansir — and bring him home.

Living a double life

For 19 months, Curnutt had been smitten with Mansir, a tall, dark army officer who had reached out to her on Instagram. And despite the many obstacles that stood in their way, the pair appeared to be making a go of things. But then she discovered that the man she loved was leading a double life.

Web of deceit

Panicking and confused, in June 2021 Curnutt had embarked on a mission to uncover the truth. But after traveling all the way from Virginia to Illinois, all she discovered were more lies – and a fiancé who appeared to have forgotten about her existence. As she dug deeper, she realized that Kane’s web of deceit stretched even further than she could have imagined.

A cruel and twisted game

So what was the true story behind this seemingly clean-cut military man? Did he really have a tragic past and awards for valor in battle, or were those all tall tales spun as part of a cruel and twisted game? On the brink of giving birth, Curnutt was forced to accept that Mansir was a fraud. And that was just the beginning...

A modern romance

When Curnutt had first encountered Mansir back in 2019 she could never have guessed that their story would unfold in the way that it did. According to news website The Daily Beast, the couple met on Instagram, the soldier messaging her out of the blue. Apparently, he had complimented her photographs, and she had been delighted to respond.

All-American hero

After all, what wasn’t there to like? An officer in the U.S. Army, Mansir appeared to be nothing less than an all-American hero. And as the pair talked, they realized that they had a lot in common. Both loved shooting, for example, and he was a fan of skydiving – a pursuit that Curnutt had always wanted to try.

Smitten

As they carried on chatting, Curnutt discovered that Mansir was ten years older than she was, with two children from an earlier marriage. On top of that, he also lived 600 miles away on an army base in North Carolina. But by this time she was already smitten, and mere physical distance seemed a far-from-insurmountable obstacle.

Love at first sight

Finally, in December 2019 the long-distance couple were able to meet face-to-face for the first time. According to The Daily Beast, Curnutt was on her way home after a vacation and decided to make a detour to drop by Mansir’s base in Fort Bragg, NC. In person, it seems, the spark was undeniable, and the pair became an item.

Long-distance lovers

Despite the distance between them, the pair kept their romance alive by talking to each other on the telephone every day. Then, just weeks after their first meeting, Mansir came to Curnutt with some news. He was, he said, being transferred to Virginia, some 250 miles to the northwest of his current post.

Following her heart

Faced with the prospect of being even further separated from her new love, Curnutt began to consider her options. Could she, perhaps, uproot her life and move to Virginia to be with Mansir? Although the couple had not been together for long, she mulled things over – and eventually decided to follow her heart. So, she packed up her belongings and set out for a fresh start.

Living the dream

At first, it seems, Curnutt was living the dream. Unable to live on the base with Mansir, she settled into a nearby townhouse rented for her by her soldier beau. And according to The Daily Beast, he would come and visit her in their love den on a regular basis.

A dark secret

In their spare time, the couple explored the surrounding countryside on foot and treated themselves to meals bought from their favorite eateries. On other occasions, they simply sat and enjoyed long talks – all the signs of a healthy and loving relationship. But, as Curnutt would later discover, Mansir was concealing a dark secret the entire time.

Expecting

On October 6, 2020, Curnutt revealed some exciting news to her partner: she was pregnant with their first child. Speaking to The Daily Beast in July 2021 she recalled, “The first thing he did was grab me in the kitchen and give me a hug and a kiss, and then he grabbed my hands and we ended up praying. It seemed really genuine and he seemed like he really cared and he really wanted us to be a family.”

A difficult pregnancy

Excited to welcome a baby into the world, Curnutt purchased a journal for logging her thoughts and feelings along the way. But in the end, The Daily Beast reports, she found the experience “really depressing.” And it wasn’t just the pregnancy blues that were threatening to destroy her fantasy of domestic bliss.

Something amiss

As the couple’s relationship progressed, Curnutt began to notice little things that didn’t quite add up. On one occasion, for example, she found a video of Mansir in which he claimed to have a daughter. Curious, she asked him about the child – only to be told that she had tragically died.

Mystery girl

Of course, it was possible that Mansir simply didn’t want to talk about such a traumatic event. But there were other hints, too, that something was amiss. On one occasion, Curnutt noticed that the soldier had finished alongside the same woman in two 10K races. When she asked him about the mystery girl, though, he dodged the question.

Deployed

And then there was the incident that had occurred in the spring of 2020 shortly after the pair had first moved to Virginia. Having gone on ahead to settle into her new home, Curnutt had been heartbroken after Mansir informed her that he was being deployed. But several months later, she spotted his vehicle on the local army base.

A ruined surprise?

At first, Mansir had denied that the vehicle was his. But then, just days later, Curnutt saw him in person, climbing into his car. Speaking to The Daily Beast, she said, “He played it off as if he was trying to surprise me post-deployment and that he had to quarantine, and that I ruined the whole surprise.”

The ex-wife

Months later, in February 2021 Curnutt received a telephone call from the woman that she believed to be Mansir’s ex-wife. But he was able to convince her that his former partner was mentally unwell, and a gold-digger to boot. By this time, the mother-to-be was five months pregnant; you can understand why she would have had no desire to start doubting the word of the father of her unborn child.

Silver Star

After all, Mansir was a hero – a military man who claimed to have been awarded a Silver Star for valor in combat. In fact, he had even invited Curnutt to the ceremony where he was set to receive the prestigious medal. But unfortunately, this proud moment would never materialize.

An unexpected twist

By June 7, 2021, Curnutt’s due date was just 24 hours away. But rather than looking forward to the moment, she was consumed by anxiety and fear. Two days earlier, she had started to experience contractions and had called Mansir to share the news. She was shocked, though, when he told her off for harassing him at work – and she hadn’t heard from him since.

The wrong name

Sure that the baby was on its way, Curnutt called the Army base in desperation. But when she got through to the sergeant major, he called her by the wrong name. Worse still, it was a name she recognized: it belonged to Mansir’s ex-wife. Confused, she explained that she urgently needed to speak to her partner, only to be told that he was on leave.

A difficult conversation

At the end of her tether, Curnutt had little choice but to do the unthinkable. Picking up the phone, she dialled the number of Mansir’s ex-wife. Speaking to The Daily Beast, she explained, “I was like, ‘Listen, I know you probably don’t like me because I’m the new person in his life, but I’m calling you out of desperation because I haven’t been able to find [him].’”

Still married

But the woman on the other end of the line, whose identity has not been released, delivered a chilling response. Far from being Mansir’s ex-wife, the pair were still married. Even worse, she informed Curnutt that the father of her unborn child was hundreds of miles away in Illinois.

A long drive

Of course, Curnutt was dumbstruck by this news, but she didn’t take it lying down. Instead, she climbed into her car and drove west to Illinois, eventually reaching her destination some 16 hours later. At about 2:00 a.m., she stood outside Mansir’s parents’ house, confident that her errant lover was inside.

Police intervention

“I knew he didn’t have anywhere else to go,” Curnutt told The Daily Beast. But even then, things did not go to plan. Rather than come outside and talk with his heavily pregnant partner, Mansir remained inside. And before long, the cops were called to address the rapidly escalating situation.

Probably a stalker

According to The Daily Beast, the official police report contains Mansir’s father’s original 911 call, in which he claimed that Curnutt was threatening to burn down his home. And when officers arrived on the scene, the soldier added fuel to the fire. Apparently, he told them that had never seen the woman outside his parents’ home before, suggesting that she was likely a stalker who had tracked him to Illinois.

Not alone

Thankfully, the officers soon realized that something was up. With Curnutt clearly about to give birth, they heard her side of the story – and saw that she had photographs to back up her claims. Soon, they dismissed the allegations and told her that she was free to go. But not before they unwittingly dropped another bombshell: Mansir was not alone inside.

A third woman

As Curnutt listened in disbelief, she began to realize the full scale of Mansir’s deceit. Because according to the police officers, he was with another woman – and it wasn’t his wife. It was the woman pictured finishing alongside the soldier at the end of those 10K runs. So although he had not admitted it at the time, there was clearly something going on between the pair. Just how many women did this lothario have on the go?

The truth comes out

The following day, Mansir attended a divorce hearing during which his wife petitioned for full custody of their three children. Their daughter, it turned out, was still very much alive. And at the courthouse in Illinois, the military man’s web of lies continued to unravel. Apparently, Curnutt had been far from the only ‘other woman’ in his life.

Jessica

While Curnutt and Mansir’s current wife both testified at the hearing, they were also joined by a third woman, who The Daily Beast dubbed “Jessica” to protect her identity. According to her statement, she had been engaged to the philanderer back in 2017. And her story was certainly a familiar one.

An unlikely alliance

Like Curnutt, this other deceived partner had been fed stories about Mansir’s tragic past – and deployments that kept him away from her when she needed him to be around. But in reality, he had been sneaking out for secret liaisons while his wife was at home expecting their third child. Determined to get to the bottom of things, the scorned women formed an unlikely alliance.

Digging deeper

Banding together, Jessica, Curnutt and Mansir’s ex-wife pored over documents and managed to identify a number of additional women who had been in a relationship with the soldier since 2016. Unfortunately, some of them were reluctant to come forward with their stories because of their own military connections. But others had no such concerns.

I want to see him burn

“I think what I went through, I went through for a reason, because I was going to be the one to speak up,” Curnutt told The Daily Beast. “He’s been getting away with it for over a decade. Your time is up.” Later, she admitted that she felt some hesitancy around publicizing her story, but ultimately decided, “I also kind of want to see him burn.”

Playbook

“He’s got this playbook,” Jessica told The Daily Beast. “He tells these lies about his dead children, about his PTSD, his deployments, and all the horrible things he’s had to do. He creates these imaginary traumas to cloak his lies in. It’s amazing lining up those lies across all the people I talked to and being like, ‘Wow… You too?’”

Addison

On June 13, 2021, Curnutt’s daughter Addison was born – thankfully healthy despite the traumatic events immediately before her birth. And even though the new mother was heartbroken after finding out the truth, she still sent Mansir photographs of the baby girl. According to The Daily Beast, he did not respond.

Social media

As she struggled to adapt to her new life, Curnutt took to social media to share her story. And as it gained traction across the web, more women reached out to her to share their own unpleasant encounters with Mansir. In one Instagram post, there are also allegations that the misconduct extended into his military life.

Exposing his lies

While covering the story in July 2021 reporters from The Daily Beast scoured Mansir’s military records, exposing the extent of his lies. Apparently, he had not been deployed overseas in seven years, proving that the stories he told Curnutt and Jessica had been elaborate lies. What’s more, he had never earned a Silver Star, the medal of which he’d claimed to be so proud.

Suspended

According to the military news website Army Times, Mansir is currently under investigation for the allegations leveled against him. After all, adultery is a punishable offence – one that can even lead to dishonorable discharge in certain cases. In the meantime, The Daily Beast reports, he has been placed on suspension.

I love her to pieces

Today, Curnutt’s Instagram serves as a stark reminder of Mansir’s lies, with snaps of them together underscored by bleak captions describing what was really going on. Despite all her struggles, though, the new mom has no regrets. She told The Daily Beast, “If it wasn’t for all this stuff I went through, I never would have gotten [Addison]. And I love her to pieces.”
