The Cast Of ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ — Then And Now

In the fall of 1990, a brand-new teen drama starring a host of promising young actors made its way into our hearts. We fell in love with Brandon, Brenda, Dylan, Kelly, and the rest of the gang over the next decade. Almost 300 episodes later, after a fantastic run, the show ended as a bona fide TV classic. But that’s got us thinking: what’s happened to the cast in the years since? From relationship dramas to Oscar wins, there’s a lot to catch up on with this stellar group of actors.

1. Jason Priestley

As the kind-hearted Brandon Walsh, Jason Priestley appeared in 245 of the 300 episodes of Beverly Hills, 90210. Although he’d made his on-screen debut back in the late 1970s, this teen drama was definitely the actor’s breakout role.

And Priestley didn’t just perform in front of the camera, either: he tried his hand as a director on the show, too, helming 15 episodes between 1993 and 1997. He certainly kept himself busy! So what did he get up to after Beverly Hills, 90210 ended?

Marriage and near-death experiences

On the acting front, Priestley has enjoyed a pretty solid career, featuring in a host of different shows. From Haven to Private Eyes, it’s been a good run. As for his personal life, the actor has experienced some serious highs and lows.

In 2005 he and makeup artist Naomi Lowde got married. Three years before this, Priestley survived a terrifying motor-racing accident at the Kentucky Speedway. Then, he avoided disaster again after tumbling off a horse in 2015. Talk about lucky escapes!

2. Shannen Doherty

Playing the twin sister of Brandon, Shannen Doherty was cast as Brenda Walsh at a very exciting time in her career. Before joining Beverly Hills, 90210, the actress had enjoyed stints on some successful shows, including Little House on the Prairie and Our House; she’d also just starred in the cult classic Heathers.

That was arguably the actress’ breakthrough role, and her successful stint on Beverly Hills, 90210 further solidified her place in the “one to watch” category. Yet Doherty didn’t stay until the end.

Breast-cancer fight

After four years on the show, Doherty departed in 1994. It didn’t negatively affect her trajectory, though. The actress went on to star in 1995’s Mallrats, before securing one of the lead roles in the popular series Charmed. But in recent times, her life has taken a heartbreaking turn.

Some three years on from having gone into remission after a two-year battle with breast cancer, in 2020 Doherty discovered her affliction had returned. And if that wasn’t enough, her long-term marriage to Kurt Iswarienko also ended in 2023.

3. Jennie Garth

When Jennie Garth was recruited to play the unsettled Kelly Taylor, her career was very much in its infancy. She’d only made her on-screen debut the previous year, appearing in three different shows in 1989.

But the young actress became a mainstay on Beverly Hills, 90210 and featured in all 292 episodes across its ten-year run. Garth also reprised her role in the spin-offs Melrose Place and 90210. It was as steady an acting job as you could’ve asked for!

Relationship drama

Following the end of Beverly Hills, 90210, Garth has popped up in several TV shows since. She’s featured in the likes of Family Guy, Community, American Dad, and Robot Chicken. Meanwhile, though, her personal life has been less steady.

After welcoming three kids into the world, Garth ended her marriage with Peter Facinelli in 2013. Then, she and Dave Abrams tied the knot a couple of years later. They’re still an item, despite spending ten months apart at one time.

4. Ian Ziering

Taking on the role of the spoiled Steve Sanders, Ian Ziering was showing a lot of promise when he joined Beverly Hills, 90210. His on-screen acting bow had come in 1981 ahead of spending a couple of years on The Guiding Light in the middle of the decade.

He went on to feature in every episode of the teen drama until it ended. Since then, though, Ziering has certainly enjoyed an eventful life, both in a personal and professional capacity.

Chippendales and Sharknado

You see, alongside his acting career, Ziering joined The Chippendales in 2013. Yes, the steamy dance troupe! Doherty and Garth actually watched one of his shows during that period, and he claimed that, “They had a great time.”

When he wasn’t dancing, Ziering became a familiar face to cult movie fans at the time, too: he fronted the crazy Sharknado franchise. As for his personal life, since 1997 the actor has been married twice, but both relationships have ended in divorce.

5. Tori Spelling

With nearly a decade of acting experience to her name, Tori Spelling was hardly a novice when she was cast on the show. The actress portrayed Kelly’s bestie Donna Martin; this was a character that eventually enjoyed more focus as the seasons progressed.

She was a mainstay until Beverly Hills, 90210 wrapped up in 2000. But what happened after that? Where did Spelling’s career go next? Well, as time went on, she forged a somewhat different path in the entertainment industry.

Becoming a reality star

Yep, Spelling became a reality television star thanks to Tori & Dean: Inn Love. The show spanned six years between 2007 and 2013 and followed her and hubby Dean McDermott. The pair tied the knot in 2006 and have since welcomed five children into the world.

Spelling hasn’t given up on acting, either. Over the years she’s featured in the likes of Scary Movie 2, Family Guy, Smallville, and The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time. Her most recent effort came in the 2023 short Rapscallion Romance.

6. Tiffani Thiessen

Younger TV fans would’ve been very familiar with Tiffani Thiessen when she made her debut on the show in 1994. By that point, the actress had already enjoyed a major small screen success in the shape of Saved by the Bell.

She’d starred in 75 episodes between 1989 and 1992 before popping up in The College Years spin-off. But Beverly Hills, 90210 really allowed Thiessen to showcase her range. Valerie Malone was a far-cry from the clean-cut Kelly Kapowski!

Off-screen feuds?

Thiessen stayed on the show until it ended, featuring in 136 episodes. According to Spelling and Garth, though, the on-screen drama bubbled over away from the cameras. The pair referred to their co-star as “that which we don’t speak of” during an appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Oof!

Still, despite that apparent feud, Thiessen has had a steady stream of work in the post-90210 years. And we’re not just talking about acting gigs here: thanks to programs such as Dinner at Tiffani’s, she’s showcased her passion for food and cooking.

7. Brian Austin Green

As the lovably dorky David Silver, Brian Austin Green was an ever-present on the show. It represented easily the most significant role of his career since making his on-screen acting debut in 1985. And the opportunities didn’t dry up for Green once Beverly Hills, 90210 ended.

He appeared in a string of notable projects over the following years, including Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Smallville, and Desperate Housewives. Plus, the actor got a chance to showcase his dancing skills in 2021 as well.

A very busy personal life

Yes, Green was a contestant on that year’s season of Dancing with the Stars. Unfortunately, he only made it up to the fourth week! But it wasn’t all bad news. Prior to the show, he’d formed a romantic bond with Sharna Burgess, who went on to be his dance partner.

They subsequently had a son together in 2022 and revealed their engagement a little over 12 months later. Green also has four children from two other relationships with Vanessa Marcil and Megan Fox, respectively. So his personal life has been far from dull!

8. Hilary Swank

It’s pretty easy to forget that Hilary Swank had a short stint on the show in the mid-to-late 1990s. She took on the role of Carly Reynolds, featuring in just 16 episodes.

The actress had already gained some big-screen experience prior to being cast in the form of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Next Karate Kid. So she was hardly a novice! Yet Swank’s career in Hollywood skyrocketed not long after she departed Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1998.

Becoming a Hollywood superstar

Just two years later, Swank won her very first Academy Award thanks to her incredible performance in Boys Don’t Cry. Then, she picked up her second Oscar in 2005 for Million Dollar Baby.

Swank has also starred in the likes of Insomnia, The Core, P.S. I Love You, Logan Lucky, and The Hunt over the last two decades as well. And with N.A.R. and Ordinary Angels on the horizon, her successful run shows no signs of stopping!

9. James Eckhouse

With eight years of on-screen acting experience under his belt, James Eckhouse joined the Beverly Hills, 90210 cast in 1990. He played Jim Walsh, Brenda and Brandon’s dad. It had been by far the biggest role of his career up to that point.

Previously, he’d made minor appearances in films such as Trading Places, Fatal Attraction, Big, and Cocktail. Yet Eckhouse didn’t stay on the show for its entire small-screen run. By the end of the fifth season, he was no longer a regular.

A steady post-90210 career

Eckhouse became a guest star after Jim was handed a promotion on the show, ahead of leaving altogether in 1998. Since then, the actor’s enjoyed a fairly steady career in the business.

He’s popped up in the likes of Ally McBeal, The West Wing, A Cinderella Story, Medium, and The Good Wife. Oh, and Eckhouse also bagged a small role in the first Avengers movie. Keep an eye out for him! In addition to acting, he’s tried his hand as a TV director, too.

10. Carol Potter

Carol Potter was no stranger to the world of television when she was recruited by the show in 1990. The actress had been a bona fide veteran compared to most of the cast: she first appeared on the small screen back in 1977.

But Beverly Hills, 90210 presented her with her most long-term role to date: she played Brenda and Brandon’s mother Cindy Walsh. Much like Eckhouse, though, Potter also switched from regular to guest star after season five concluded.

Slowing down

As Jim’s wife, Cindy followed her hubby to Hong Kong due to his job. And it eventually led to Potter’s permanent departure in 1998. Yet she wasn’t lacking for work during that part of her career.

Between 1997 and 1999 the TV veteran appeared in over 200 episodes of Sunset Beach, ahead of roles in other shows such as NYPD Blue, JAG, and Medium. She’s since slowed down in recent years. As for her personal life, Potter has been with her hubby Jeffrey Josephson for more than three decades now.

11. Gabrielle Carteris

Taking on the part of Andrea Zuckerman, Gabrielle Carteris already had a bit of experience to her name prior to 1990. But this was definitely her breakout role: the actress stuck around for the show’s entire run, despite becoming a guest star after season five.

Carteris used that additional free time wisely, though, as she managed to showcase her voice acting skills in several animated series. And her dulcet tones also popped up in some video games post-90210 as well.

Hollywood activism

Mind you, Carteris hasn’t just been focused on her own career since the show ended. For instance, she penned an article in The Hollywood Reporter that hit out at the ageism within the industry. “This problem exists for all performers, but most distinctly for women,” she noted.

In addition to that, the actress became the SAG-AFTRA president in 2016 and held the role until 2021. Away from work, she and her husband of 30-plus years are parents to two kids.

12. Dina Meyer

For Dina Meyer, Beverly Hills, 90210 presented her with one of her earliest on-screen acting opportunities. She joined the show in 1993 when she took on the role of Lucinda Nicholson, going on to appear in 12 episodes.

Meyer then left the following year, ahead of enjoying a very exciting spell. She scored big parts in the likes of DragonHeart, Johnny Mnemonic, and Starship Troopers as the ’90s progressed. On top of that, the actress briefly popped up in Friends, too.

Forging a solid career

It was a busy period! And Meyer didn’t slow down heading into the 2000s, either. You might remember her roles in Star Trek: Nemesis, Six Feet Under, Secret Agent Man, and D-Tox. Yet horror fans will undoubtedly be more familiar with her work in the Saw franchise.

Meyer had a pretty sizable part in the first four movies. And in recent times, she’s been seen in shows such as American Horror Story, The Flash, and NCIS: Los Angeles. Talk about a solid career.

13. Michael Cudlitz

After featuring in a 1989 short, Michael Cudlitz’s acting career really got going a couple of years later. He popped up in TV shows such as 21 Jump Street and Growing Pains. Then, he earned a spot on Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1992.

Cudlitz was cast as Tony Miller, whom he played for 11 episodes. The year 1993 saw his final appearance , but the work didn’t dry up at that stage. Opportunities continued to present themselves as the decade rolled on.

From vampires to zombies

Yes, Cudlitz featured in several notable projects across the 90s, including ER, D3: The Mighty Ducks, Grosse Pointe Blank, The Negotiator, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He also starred in nine episodes of the celebrated 2001 mini-series Band of Brothers.

From there, Cudlitz’s career continued down a solid, if unspectacular, path until 2014. At that point, he was cast in The Walking Dead as the hugely popular character Abraham Ford: it was a great part that turned a lot of heads. He went on to direct four episodes between 2018 and 2022.

14. Joe E. Tata

When it came to experience in the business, no one in the main cast could touch Joe E. Tata. The guy had been acting since 1960, appearing in the likes of Lost in Space, The Outer Limits, Batman, Mission: Impossible, and The Rockford Files.

He took on the guest star role of Nat Bussichio after joining Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1990. But by season six, Tata had been named as a regular. By the time the show concluded, he’d featured in nearly 240 episodes!

Battle with Alzheimer’s

Despite the commitment, Tata did find time to work on the odd project in between. Yet after the program ended, he slowed right down. In fact, the veteran actor only racked up four credits between 2001 and 2014. One of those was a brief stint on the spin-off 90210.

Sadly, though, Tata’s life took a heartbreaking turn in 2018. He discovered that he had Alzheimer’s disease at that stage, and passed away some four years later: the TV star was 85.

15. Kathleen Robertson

After making her acting debut in the mid-1980s, Kathleen Robertson scored her first major role in the TV show Maniac Mansion in 1990. She went on to star in 65 episodes, before moving on to Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1994.

And for the next three years, the actress played Clare Arnold, ending her run just one episode shy of the 100 mark. So close! But that wouldn’t be the last we’d see of Robertson going forward. The following period proved to be very busy.

Exciting times ahead?

Yep, Robertson appeared in a string of movies post-90210, including I Am Sam and Scary Movie 2. She also bagged a role in 2006’s Hollywoodland, which starred Ben Affleck. Since then, she’s had a steady stream of work on both the big and small screen.

Sci-fi fans are sure to remember her six-episode run on The Expanse recently. Plus, Robertson has been trying her hand as a writer and creator, too. She penned the entirety of her new show Swimming with Sharks in 2022 and has two more scripts in the fire at present.

16. Vincent Young

Bringing the role of Noah Hunter to life, Vincent Young joined the show during the latter stages of its run. He was introduced in 1997 and went on to appear in 84 episodes over the next three years.

This was very much the actor’s breakthrough gig, as he’d only made his onscreen bow in 1995. It was just his third credit! Having said that, though, Young needed to be extremely patient after Beverly Hills, 90210 ended: he faced a lengthy wait for his next acting job.

On the comeback trail

Yep, Young’s first post-90210 role didn’t come until 2004’s Knuckle Sandwich. From there, he enjoyed brief stints on JAG, CSI: NY, and NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service up to 2006. Then, over the next 11 years, the guy only racked up two more credits.

It was slow going to say the least! But things have picked up recently. With three upcoming projects in the pipeline, could a comeback be on the cards for Young? We can’t wait to find out.

17. Rebecca Gayheart

Rebecca Gayheart was no stranger to the world of TV when she earned a brief part on Beverly Hills, 90210. After all, her breakout role had come in the show Loving, in which she appeared in 178 episodes between 1992 and 1993. That’s quite the run, right?

Gayheart also scored some other acting gigs prior to being cast as Antonio “Toni” Marchette in 1995. And while she was only in eight episodes, the next few years of her career proved to be very exciting.

Marital complications

After bagging a small role in Scream 2, Gayheart became a horror star thanks to her brilliantly unhinged performance in 1998’s Urban Legend. Since then, she’s enjoyed a solid career in Hollywood. Mind you, her personal life has been somewhat tumultuous in the last few years.

Following more than a decade together, the actress split from her hubby Eric Dane back in 2018. But the divorce was never finalized, with stories circulating in 2023 that the couple might’ve reunited. They’re parents to two young girls.

18. Casper Van Dien

Casper Van Dien was an up-and-coming actor when he joined the cast of the show back in 1994. He played the part of Griffin Stone, popping up in just seven episodes that year.

Following that short stint, though, Van Dien went on to enjoy an incredibly prolific career in the business. He rounded off the ’90s by scoring a pair of major roles in Starship Troopers and Sleepy Hollow. And since then, the guy has barely paused for breath!

Marrying royalty

In total, Van Dien has a whopping 151 acting credits to his name. Trust us, that’s not a typo! His personal life has been equally busy over the years as well. The actor was married to Robert Mitchum’s granddaughter, Carrie Mitchum, between 1993 and 1997 before splitting up. They had two kids together.

Then, he welcomed two more into the world during his second marriage with Catherine Oxenberg. Her mom was Yugoslavian royalty, in case you didn’t know! Their 16-year relationship ended in 2015; Van Dien married for a third time in 2018.

19. Lindsay Price

After making her start as an actress in the 1980s, Lindsay Price bagged two significant small-screen roles just a few years later. She featured in 176 episodes of All My Children between 1991 and 1993.

Then, Price racked up 140 appearances in The Bold and the Beautiful in the middle of the decade. So you could hardly accuse her of lacking experience when she eventually joined the Beverly Hills, 90210 cast! She took on the character of Janet Sosna.

Small-screen success

Price worked on the show during its last two years, and popped up in 71 episodes. Since then, her career has mainly been confined to the small screen. She’s appeared in the likes of How I Met Your Mother, Lipstick Jungle, Castle, and Hawaii Five-O over the years.

Her last credit came in 2021. As for her home life, Price and her second husband Curtis Stone are the proud parents of two kids, following their wedding in the summer of 2013.

20. Luke Perry

While Luke Perry had been acting since the 1980s, he didn’t become a bona fide star until Beverly Hills, 90210. As the perennial bad boy Dylan McKay, he stayed on the show throughout its ten-year run, starring in 199 episodes.

Perry scored some other roles across that period, too, as he popped up in the likes of The Fifth Element and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. And he didn’t have trouble finding work post-90210, either: the actor was fairly prolific.

A heartbreaking tragedy

Despite all that work, though, it could be argued that Riverdale offered Perry a route back into the spotlight. He joined the popular show in 2017. But tragedy struck just two years later: Perry suffered a huge stroke and passed away in March 2019 at just 52 years of age.

“He was surrounded by his children Jack and Sophie, fiancée Wendy Madison Bauer, ex-wife Minnie Sharp, mother Ann Bennett, stepfather Steve Bennett, brother Tom Perry, sister Amy Coder, and other close family and friends,” read a message from his representative.
