Boy Switched At Birth Comes Out With A Heavy Confession About His Family

It was a happy time for Megs Clinton Parker and Sandy Dawkins. Both were new moms to baby boys — adorable little bundles of joy with their whole lives in front of them. Those lives were forever changed, however, after an unforgivable mix-up at the hospital. And after the truth was finally revealed, one of the boys came forward with a gut-wrenching admission.

Two years of bliss

It sounds like the plot of a Hollywood movie, but this was as real as it gets. For two years, neither Sandy nor Megs had any idea that the kids they’d loved and cherished weren’t actually the ones they’d given birth to. That news eventually came out in 1991.

Huge shock

As you can imagine, this came as a huge shock to the two moms. Just like that, their lives had been turned upside down in the most unexpected of ways. Still, as crazy as it all was, few people could’ve predicted the highs and lows that would follow over the years to come.

The life-changing moment

And Sandy and Megs had to deal with the consequences of someone else’s huge error. Both had been patients at Nigel Hospital outside Johannesburg, South Africa, and they had delivered their babies at almost the same time. Oddly enough, though, no other children were born at the hospital that day.

A simple mistake

That meant little Gavin and Robin and their moms may have had the maternity ward to themselves. Surely there couldn’t be any mix-ups with just two babies to care for? Well, on that day in February 1989, a simple mistake did happen. And it set some shocking events in motion.

“The tags were switched”

During a 2004 interview with 60 Minutes Australia, a teenage Robin explained what had happened. And considering the seriousness of the situation, he spoke surprisingly matter-of-factly. “The tags were switched at birth. [The hospital staff] didn’t mark us immediately, and we went home with the wrong mothers,” he admitted. Oh boy.

Going home

So, off they went. Megs and Gavin returned to her home in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, while Sandy and Robin stayed in Johannesburg. Without realizing it, the moms were each now more than 300 miles away from their birth sons. But that isn’t the only thing to consider here.

Worlds apart

You see, Megs’ and Sandy’s lives were almost opposites in one way. Sandy didn’t have much money, meaning Robin ultimately grew up in poverty. Megs, on the other hand, was a lot more financially secure. She didn’t have to worry so much about providing for Gavin.

Road to the truth

Yet the moms raised their kids as best they could — until that huge bombshell was dropped in 1991. Megs had found herself in a paternity dispute with a guy who claimed to be Gavin’s dad. Naturally, a DNA test was ordered to clear up the issue once and for all. But when the results came back, Megs discovered that neither she nor the man was biologically related to Gavin.

Uncovering the details

If Megs hadn’t actually given birth to Gavin, then, who was his mother? And where was her biological son in all this? Staff at Nigel Hospital frantically examined their files to figure out what had happened. And it didn’t take long for them to shine a light on the jaw-dropping truth.

The reactions

How did the two women respond to this insane news? Well, Megs gave her take on it to 60 Minutes Australia back in the 1990s. The interviewer behind the camera bluntly asked Megs, “You didn’t reject [Gavin]?” The mom replied, “Not at all.”

“Where’s my baby?”

Megs continued, “You can’t reject a child that you’ve been so close to for two years.” Her focus then shifted to the swap. She said, “Initially, I think you protect the one you’ve got. You know, the first few days are [a] shock. Then the curiosity comes. ‘Well, hold on a second. It’s not as easy as that. Where’s my baby?’ You know?”

“I went hysterical”

And Sandy gave a vivid description of her initial response. “It was like somebody electrocuted me,” she said. “I went hysterical immediately. Because, I mean, you get told that the child you’ve been looking after for the last 20 months is not yours. He belongs to somebody else.”

The next step

But now that everyone knew the truth, what was going to happen with the boys? Would Megs and Sandy switch them again so that they could be with their birth sons? To say it was a massive dilemma is quite an understatement. Choices don’t tend to come much harder.

Forming a connection

In the end, Megs and Sandy refused to exchange their babies. Instead, the moms continued to raise them as if they were their own biological children. But the two families did connect with each other once they’d had time to get their heads around the news. And Gavin and Robin became like siblings.

“We get up to mischief”

The two boys reflected on their relationship while talking to 60 Minutes Australia in 2000. Robin said, “I was looking forward to [meeting Gavin] because having a brother would’ve been so cool. Then I met Gav, and [I] was like, ‘Cool!’ We do things together, we get up to mischief sometimes!”

“We’re like brothers”

“But at least we know each other,” Robin continued. “I mean, if we weren’t swapped [as babies], I don’t think we would have had a good time because we’re like brothers to each other [now].” He also made it clear that he was happy with the arrangement as it was. Would it last?

Hard times

In a word: no. Four years later, the Australian show caught up with Robin again. By this time, he was a teenager, and his opinion of growing up without his birth mom had completely changed. And as Robin spoke honestly to the cameras, he made a heartbreaking confession.

Robin’s confession

Robin told the program, “It’s not easy. I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. It’s difficult. If I’ve ever wanted anything, I’ve had to work towards it. I’ve never had it come towards me. I’m not saying I’ve never had anything. What I’m saying is [that] Gavin gets things easy.”

Resentment had grown

You could sense the resentment. Megs touched on this during her appearance on the show as well. But she also had something else on her mind. It was all about her decision to keep Gavin — and it made for very tough listening.

From good to bad

Megs said, “The advice… [I got] is that you can’t [take] a child from a good environment and put them in a bad [one]. I know that sounds dreadful. You don’t take a child [out] of an environment and put him in a worse environment. I don’t think Gavin would’ve survived [it].”

“I don’t blame him”

“By letting Gavin stay, I basically sacrificed Robin, didn’t I?” Megs tearfully added. “But he survived, and he’s a lovely boy. I knew he’d be resentful, I knew that. And I don’t blame him. He’s right.” Gavin was a little less compassionate, though. He flat-out denied feeling any sympathy for Robin’s situation.

A turning point?

Things weren’t looking good for the two families’ relationship. And without beating around the bush, more turmoil was on the way. At least there was a small period of calm in the middle. In fact, it seemed for a while as though Robin had finally reached a positive turning point.

Making a new home

In 2004 Megs convinced Robin to say goodbye to his life with Sandy and travel to Pietermaritzburg. After 15 years, her boy was finally living under her roof. Here’s the problem, though: Gavin didn’t go to Sandy. He stayed in Pietermaritzburg, leaving his birth mother with an empty nest.

“She’s ruined people’s lives”

Unsurprisingly, Sandy was left crushed by what happened. And she knew exactly who to blame. “I just want to know if [Megs] is very happy with what she’s achieved,” she told 60 Minutes Australia in 2007. “I mean, she’s ruined people’s lives. There’s no other way to look at it. She’s ruined mine, for starters.”

“I’m not going to be sorry”

How did Megs respond to that? Well, she expressed some empathy for Sandy — before going in for the kill. “I can understand [Sandy’s reaction]. If it was me, I’d be devastated,” she revealed. “But I’m not sending [Robin] back because she’s sore. I’m not going to be sorry because I won. I’m damn glad I won.”

The cost of victory

Megs’ “win” ultimately came at a huge cost. Once Robin got settled in Pietermaritzburg, he started at a brand new school. But while Megs demanded a lot from her teenage son, he just couldn’t live up to her standards — in or out of class.

Tensions at home

Robin and Megs’ relationship started to crumble. The mom would even go on to describe her home as a “war zone.” But she offered her side of the argument while talking to 60 Minutes Australia in 2012. She was also unafraid to admit that mistakes had been made.

“I expected too much, too soon”

Megs told the program, “I know that my expectations were probably too high. [But] having had the contact with [Robin], I understood that he knew what we expected from him. In hindsight, I expected too much, too soon. But I wasn’t wanting it for me. I wanted it for him.”

Like being in a bottle

Robin also explained himself, saying, “When I’m constantly under pressure, you’re going to turn me into a dragon. It’s not who I am. It was like I was in a bottle and the lid was closed. For me to try and change in two, three years to suit Megs or to keep her happy… I tried and I thought I could do it, but I couldn’t.”

Moving away

So that brings us to the next twist in this incredible story. With Megs and Robin’s relationship on the rocks, the teenager abandoned his studies and left Pietermaritzburg, traveling north to the town of Louis Trichardt. He was 18 by then, meaning no one could really stop him.

A family in tatters

Robin bagged himself a job and seemed happy enough. But the same couldn’t be said for the people he had left behind. Rage and utter devastation filled Megs’ house as she and Gavin assessed the breakdown of their family.

Contrasting emotions

The anger and bitterness came from Gavin’s end. He was furious that Robin had just abandoned Megs. He felt his “brother” had shown no appreciation for what his mom had done for him. As for Megs? She was heartbroken. It was a far cry from her earlier defiance.

“I felt as if I’d died”

“When [Robin] left, I almost died,” Megs tearfully told 60 Minutes Australia. “I felt as if I’d died. I fought so hard for it, and I wanted it so much. And then when it failed, it [had never] occurred to me it would fail. [I] wanted all the right things for the right reasons, but it just didn’t fit into place.”

The twists keep coming

Megs added, “When [Robin] left, I just stopped living for a while.” That’s tough enough to read, let alone to go through. But Robin’s devastating departure didn’t spell the end of this unbelievable tale. Yep, there’s still more to come — including another big twist.

Starting a new family

After he left Megs, Robin met a girl named Liesel. They began dating and eventually married. But something had prompted them to tie the knot. Yes, Liesel was pregnant, meaning Megs would be a grandma! Robin and his wife later welcomed a son, James.

Better understanding

And now that he was a parent himself, Robin admitted that his perspective on the baby-swap situation had changed. He could finally grasp the impossible choice both Sandy and Megs had faced. Then the dad turned his attention to baby James. “If I have to find [out] that he’s not mine, there’s no way I’d give him back,” he told 60 Minutes Australia.

“I’d just keep it a secret”

Robin continued, “I would make a decision of not getting to know the other child, because what I’ve got is good and [I want to] keep it that way. I wouldn’t want [James] to know. I’d just keep it a secret.” When those comments were relayed to Megs, however, she said that her son would’ve been “worse off” if she had taken that approach.

The lie of the land

Anyway, despite all of the difficulties they had gone through together, Robin did find his way back to Megs and Gavin. The catalyst? His little bundle of joy. Sadly, the situation with Sandy was much different. By that stage, she was no longer in contact with any of them.

“Families stick together”

And Megs reflected on the reconciliation while holding her grandson. She said to 60 Minutes Australia, “I think we’ve realized that there’s nothing more important than family. It doesn’t matter about the differences. Families stick together. They don’t let little issues get that big, [and] we should never have allowed it to get that big.” It’s a sentiment that can be shared by everybody — even celebrities.

Stranger things

Because while Stranger Things and Lord of the Rings actor Sean Astin is good at playing father figures on screen, the movie star didn’t know for many years who his own biological dad was. In fact, his father could have been any one of a number of different men, which sounds like a scenario ripped straight from the movie Mamma Mia! But, eventually, Sean got to the bottom of the mystery – with a little help from a DNA test.

Familial uncertainty

Of course, there’s no such uncertainty over Sean’s mom. And you may recognize her name, too. She was Oscar-winning actress Patty Duke, and she lived a fascinating and sometimes tragic life prior to her passing in 2016. She also wasn’t shy about dating several men at once.

Paternity test

Yes, Patty had reportedly been in three relationships when she became pregnant with Sean. And according to the actress, any one of those men could have been her son’s father. The guys in question were Desi Arnaz Jr. – the son of Lucille Ball – a man named Michael Tell whom Patty had impulsively married for 13 days and John Astin of The Addams Family fame. You shouldn’t necessarily read anything into John’s last name, either.

Lacking technology

So, why didn’t the relevant parties just conduct DNA tests to begin with? Well, when Sean was born in 1971, that technology was a long time from becoming commonplace. That meant the family couldn’t have simply had DNA analysis done – if, indeed, Patty was even willing to let that happen. And to complicate matters further, there was a fourth guy involved as well. In 1986 Patty married a military man called Michael Pearce, who became Sean’s stepfather.

Media interest

The media was obviously pretty interested in such a story. A beautiful actress having a child without knowing who the father was? It was practically tailor-made for tabloid headlines. The mystery of Sean’s parentage was kept from the boy himself, though. In 2001 John told People magazine, “[Sean] basically grew up without any real knowledge of all that stuff.”

The truth is out

Still, when Sean was a teenager – and already a rising star thanks to his appearance in The Goonies – his mother would tell him the truth about who she believed his father to be. And while Sean naturally accepted this, everything would change again when he was in his mid-twenties.

A question mark

The question mark over his dad wasn’t the only matter Sean had to deal with, either. You see, Patty had battled against bipolar disorder, and it wasn’t until 1982 that she finally began taking the medication that would help her. At that point, the star was married to John Astin, with whom she’d had another child.

A mom confesses

That meant Patty had Sean, his younger brother MacKenzie and Astin’s sons David, Tom and Allen to look after. But her mental illness meant she wasn’t well-equipped to handle the situation. In 1999 Patty told People, “It was terrible. I was a truly loving mom, but I didn’t have the tools to do the job.”

Untangling the relationships

Patty had actually been married before becoming pregnant with Sean, too. When she had still been a teenager, the actress had wed Harry Falk Jr. – a man several years her senior who had been a crew member on her eponymous television show. But the union wasn’t to last. Just two years into the marriage, the couple called it quits.

Ill-fated relationships

In her 1999 interview with People, Patty mused on this ill-fated relationship, “I didn’t know how to be an adult. I had no preparation.” She herself had spent a childhood under the care of a married couple called Ethel and John Ross, whom Patty has alleged abused her. Reportedly, her own biological father, John Duke, was also an alcoholic she barely saw.

Triumphant

Patty told People that while she’d normally only encounter her dad at his preferred bar, she had nevertheless “worshipped” him. That must have made his death hard to bear. John Duke passed away in 1963 – the same year his daughter scooped a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for The Miracle Worker. Patty was a mere 16 years old then, making her the youngest actress to emerge triumphant at the Oscars at that time.

Bringing shame

You’d assume that Patty’s mom would have been right there at the Academy Awards ceremony, pleased as punch. Sadly, that wasn’t so. Her mother, Frances, suffered from mental health issues herself, having gone through bouts of depression. And, alarmingly, the Rosses reportedly forbade Frances from going to the Oscars over fears that she would bring shame on her own daughter.

Mental health struggles

According to Patty, Ethel and John had also been so determined to make her into a star that they completely neglected her own mental health. She alleged in the People interview that Ethel had once told her, “We’re gonna change your name. Anna Marie is dead. You’re Patty now.”

Struggling behind the scenes

Yet while Patty became a name to watch, Anna Marie was struggling behind the scenes. And in 1969 she faced down a horrible tragedy. In that year, her friend Sharon Tate – with whom she’d appeared in Valley of the Dolls – was murdered. Patty would have been having dinner with Sharon that night if she hadn’t contracted a throat infection.

More issues

At least Patty could fall back on the love and affection she received from men – although this wasn’t without its issues, either. Three years after her split from Harry, she became involved in another headline-grabbing relationship. She began dating Desi Arnaz Jr., who was only 17 years old at the time.

Love Lucy

Desi’s mother, Lucille Ball, was a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. And, perhaps understandably, she did absolutely not want her son dating a woman who was both older than him and divorced. But Desi continued the relationship anyway. He was Patty’s date at the 1970 Emmys, where the actress’ behavior made folks assume that she was high or otherwise intoxicated.

Spiraling

While accepting her award for the TV movie My Sweet Charlie, Patty mumbled a few sentences but mostly just stared at the audience in terror. She reportedly hadn’t slept for three whole weeks before the awards took place and was in the middle of a manic episode. Sadly, this was the first sign to the wider world that something was wrong.

Alarming discovery

Desi stood by Patty’s side nonetheless. And in 1991 he even cleared up a misconception about their relationship, telling Woman’s Day, “Although the press made them out to be enemies, mom actually liked Patty Duke. What she didn’t like was the idea of me, at 17, having a relationship with a 23-year-old divorcee.” But while Patty eventually parted ways with Desi, the star made an alarming discovery after the break-up: she was pregnant with a boy she would call Sean.

Down the aisle

In the grip of another manic episode, the actress then married a man she barely knew. Patty’s new husband was rock ‘n’ roll promoter Michael Tell, who had been subletting an apartment from her. And as you may expect, that marriage, too, was short-lived – at less than two weeks.

Needing help

In 2018 one of Patty’s friends, William Jankowski, spoke to Closer Weekly about that incident. He claimed that Patty had desperately called Anne Bancroft, her co-star from The Miracle Worker, for assistance. And her fellow star obliged. Jankowski said, “Anne got her on a plane back to LA and into a psychiatric hospital. The marriage was annulled, and Patty remained grateful to Anne for standing by her.”

Affair to remember

All the while, Patty believed that the father of her baby was John Astin. She’d been involved in an affair with him, although the two apparently came to an agreement: John would divorce his wife, and he and Patty would get married. That happened, too, in 1972, and at the wedding baby Sean reportedly called John “daddy.”

Bio dad?

John then adopted Sean, and the boy grew up believing he was his biological father. But the relationship between Sean’s parents soon began to change. There was the age gap to contend with, for starters, as John was 16 years Patty’s senior. And there were tensions when John became a Buddhist in 1984. He was determined that his whole family also convert, but Patty wasn’t having it. So, the following year, she left him.

First revelation

Then came the first revelation about Sean’s paternity. When the fledgling actor was just 14 years old, Patty told him the man he believed was his father wasn’t actually related to him biologically. According to her, Sean’s real dad was actually Desi Arnaz Jr.

A bond

So, Sean started seeing and eventually befriending Desi, and the two of them began to bond. At the same time, though, he was also forming a relationship with his new stepfather. Following her divorce from John in 1985, Patty had married Michael Pearce just a year later. Sean would have been 15 years old at that time.

Tragedy strikes

And, thankfully, this last relationship stuck – even in the face of tragedy. In 1992 Patty’s mother – who had moved in with her – died. Then, six years later, Michael’s daughter and Patty’s stepdaughter Raelene drowned in an automobile accident. But it didn’t break the couple apart.

Marriage material

In 2010 Patty told the website HollywoodChicago.com, “Mike and I are coming up on our 25th wedding anniversary, which is amazing – particularly for someone who is bipolar. When we’re undiagnosed, we have a hard time hanging onto anything. In my history, I married three really lovely men, [but] I just wasn’t marriage material. Thank god when I became marriage material, there was my husband. He was waiting for me.”

Sean's life

Of course, there was another Mike who had been part of Patty’s life, and he was about to enter Sean’s as well. When Sean was in his mid-20s, he was approached by a relative of Michael Tell. This person suggested to the actor that there was a high chance that Michael – not Desi – was Sean’s biological father.

Mega famous

So in the ’90s – just before he found mega-fame as Sam in the Lord of the Rings trilogy – Sean underwent a DNA test to finally discover who his biological dad was. And the results were remarkable. John Astin wasn’t his father, nor was Desi Arnaz Jr. He was, in fact, Michael Tell.

Neat twist

And there was another neat twist to the story: finding out the truth changed surprisingly little about Sean’s life. You see, he already considered the man who raised him to be his dad. In 2001 he told People, “If you want to know who I am, John Astin is my father, [and] Michael Tell is my biological father.”

Good relationships

In fact, Sean maintained good relationships with all three of the men who’d been in the running. He explained to People, “I have a good relationship with Mike [Tell]. That’s who I am. I don’t fault anybody, I don’t fault myself or with Desi, who is like my godfather. I have such a powerful love bond with this man. He’s a gorgeous human being.”

DNA testing

What was Patty’s take on the DNA revelation? Well, she wasn’t so sure about any of it. The star told People that same year, “I don’t buy that test. I can support [Sean’s] truth as long as my truth, if not supported, is respected. I have told him I know what I know to be true. When God looks me in the eye and says, ‘Anna Marie, you have been mistaken all these years,’ then I will consider [Michael Tell’s paternity].”

Good outcome

It was a good outcome for John Astin, too, as it turned out. In 2001 he told People that he had a “spiritual connection” with Sean before adding, “We’re very close. We have a good time together.” And he even had a bond with Michael Tell. John told the magazine, “[Sean’s] biological dad turns out to be a great guy, and we’ve become friendly.”

Speaking out

But what did Sean make of the whole thing? Well, in a 2004 interview with 20/20, he claimed that he was still “so close” to Desi and still thought of John as his father. He also revealed, “I can call any of them on the phone any time I want to. John, Desi, Mike or Papa Mike… my four dads.”

Truth telling

And Sean likely had those men to turn to after Patty’s death. The Oscar-winning star sadly passed away in 2016, following a lifetime spent not only coping with mental health issues but also advocating for others in the same position. Honoring his mom that year, Sean told the Los Angeles Times, “Above all, the way that I think of my mother – the thing that gives me such joy and reverence for her – is that above all else, she was a warrior.”

A good cause

In 2018 Sean also spoke about his mother’s life at The Menninger Clinic’s annual luncheon. He said, “She became – because she was extremely famous – this champion for mental health issues. She knew that her salvation [was] in disclosing to people her own pain and suffering.”

New dad

And Sean’s a parent himself now to daughters Alexandra, Elizabeth and Isabella. If you’ve seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy, you’ll know that Sam becomes a dad in the end and is seen on screen with his little daughter Eleanor. Eleanor was portrayed by Alexandra, who was still a toddler at the time.

Moving on

The actor’s since taken on other “dad” roles, too. In season two of the hit show Stranger Things, he portrays Bob Newby – a father figure to main character Will and an all-around nice guy. Bob became a breakout character, in fact, and so fans were devastated when – spoiler alert – he was devoured by a monster.

Still talking about it

And the increased interest in Sean’s career after Stranger Things has led to more people discovering his paternity story. In October 2017 a Bob fan tweeted at Sean, “In a world where step-parents are vilified via film, there is finally a hero!” The actor then responded, “My mom married an actual Drill Sergeant, SFC Michael Ray Pearce... best step-dad a kid could hope for.”

Proud

That very same day, Sean also replied to a tweet saying, “I’ve spent all October watching John Astin (and being him for Halloween).” The star declared, “Time well spent. My pops is second to none in the world.” And in 2018 Sean posted a pic of himself and Astin on the Goonies set, accompanying that shot with the caption “Dang, my old man looks good in this pic.”

All's well

Now Sean has taken all the fatherhood lessons he learned as a kid and applied them to his own life. When speaking to People about his mental health advocacy in 2020, he explained how it extended to his own children, saying, “We’re a talky family. We share our feelings. If someone has an issue, there’s no judgment.” And family, of course, is more than just the people linked to you by DNA.
