Eye Color May Have A Strange Influence On Personality That Most People Overlook

“Eyes are the window to the soul.” You’ve all heard that famous line, right? But that’s got us wondering — is it actually true? Well, numerous analysts have tried to get some answers. And what they found was fascinating: it seems our eye shade might actually reveal quite a bit about our character.

Plenty of research

There have been several studies on this topic at various points down the years, with one recent emerging in early 2007 at Sweden’s Orebro University. In that instance, nearly 430 people were examined. Analysts noted subjects’ eye colors, then correlated these shades with data results exploring their personalities in an attempt to spot a connection.

Fascinating connection

The researchers came to believe that there was a connective thread due to the genetics involved. As it turns out, the DNA strands that determine the colored part of our eyes have a big involvement in developing our brain’s frontal lobe, too. And that part of the organ helps determine a person’s character.

Taking notice

Since then, some other researchers have also looked into the topic, coming up with fascinating claims along the way. Something tells us that you’ll be taking more notice of your eye color after hearing them! On the subject of shade, most people around the globe are said to have brown and dark peepers.

Time to dive in...

As per the South West Londoner website, that figure stands at more than 70 percent globally. So what does that color say about a person’s personality, then? Well, using the information from the analyses, we’ll be examining each of the six shades you can sport, and how they supposedly reflect your character.

Brown/dark eyes

To kick things off, it seems only fitting that we start with the globe’s most prevalent eye shade. But before we get going, here’s another interesting point. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, no other hue is older than darkish brown. Apparently, all humans had them in the long-distant past.

Interesting observation

Perhaps that explains why so many people still sport the color now? Anyway, journal Current Psychology took a closer look at those with darker shades, before making a really intriguing observation. The researchers behind the project noted that most of the test subjects exhibited an easygoing nature and comparatively high levels of empathy.

“Natural-born leaders”

Due to that, it was claimed that folks with darker peepers tended to have the attributes of “natural-born leaders.” Those around them can feel that way, too, thanks to the empathetic side of their characters. They’re drawn in. You’re going to start checking the eyes of those in power now, aren’t you? Do they fit the bill?

Spiritual view

Meanwhile, an astrologer named Inbaal Honigman offered an alternative view. Among other things, she claims to be an “esoteric color expert.” From her alternative perspective, eye shades carry specific spiritual meanings. And she teamed up with U.K. contact lens company Lenstore to conduct her own analysis.

“Trustworthy and reliable”

Honigman went into more detail during a chat with British newspaper the Daily Express in March 2022. She said, “Brown is the color of Earth and signifies stability and a ‘happy home.’ People with this color are generally stable in their relationship and everyday life. Others will feel a sense of security when looking into brown eyes, letting them know you’re a trustworthy and reliable person.”

Similar claim

That last sentence could be attributed to a natural-born leader, wouldn’t you say? It certainly lines up with one of Current Psychology’s earlier claims. What’s next? Well, let’s move on to green eyes: how do they measure up in comparison?

Green eyes

To gather more information on that front, The International Journal of Indian Psychology did some analysis of its own. By the end of the project, it was asserted that those who sported a green shade were judged to be better looking than everyone else. That’s quite a claim!

Envious? Maybe not...

As for the possible links to people’s character, the publication made a fascinating observation. You’re all familiar with the term “green with envy,” right? Despite that famous phrase, the researchers didn’t spot any signs of a particular propensity for jealousy in their test subjects’ make-up. Instead, they found something else in the results.

Inventiveness and mischief

Yes, according to their analysis, folks with green peepers had a playfully naughty side to them, as well as an inventive streak. Plus, it was also mentioned that they tended to be more composed than those with different eye hues. But the findings didn’t end there.

Pulled in?

Apparently, the researchers discovered that some individuals find the color to be mystifying, so they’re subsequently cautious around green-eyed folks. Have you ever noticed that? Mind you, Honigman didn’t share that view. If anything, she believed that the shade pulled people in. On the spiritual front, it’s meant to be “linked with air.”

“Good communicators”

Speaking to the Daily Express, Honigman explained, “People with this color eyes are good communicators and often intellectual. When seeing the color green, we’re immediately drawn to reading, long conversations, and nights out.” Lenstore entered the conversation here as well, suggesting the best time to deploy green contact lenses.

“More enticed”

Specialists from the company told the newspaper, “Green-colored contacts should be chosen by those who are going on a first date, as their partner will be more enticed.” That’s a trick to remember! We’d love to know if it actually works. Anyway, it’s time to switch our focus to the third shade.

Gray eyes

So what is there to say about gray eyes? Well, it’s apparently the least common shade of the six. Spotting them can be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Then again, despite their rarity, these peepers are said to have a connection to one of the other colors on the list.

A variation?

Yes, it’s claimed that gray irises are just a variant of their blue counterparts. You see, they contain additional melanin, which provides the shadowy shade. So, how does the color supposedly reflect a person’s personality?

“Well-balanced nature”

As per South West Londoner, previous analysis suggests that those with eyes sporting gray hues have a flexible character in public gatherings. “This can be translated to a well-balanced nature or having an extremely wide spectrum of emotions,” the website stated.

Hard working and lenient

On the subject of emotions, the analysis didn’t mention whether gray-eyed folks had a decent handle on them or not: apparently, this was an area that required “additional research.” Elsewhere, it was also claimed that these individuals had excellent concentration, a dedicated work ethic, and often tended to display leniency.

Respect

Plus, the research added that people sporting gray peepers were usually especially eager to gain the respect of those around them. And one additional thing popped up in the analysis, too. It goes back to the apparent link between the gray-eyed and their blue-eyed peers.

Staying alert

Yep, it’s said that young gray-eyed individuals rarely let their guard down. Allegedly, that’s a trait they share with youngsters who have a blue hue. And speaking of blue, that brings us on quite nicely to the fourth shade.

Blue eyes

Well, first things first: let’s learn a little more about the origins of blue eyes. Denmark’s Copenhagen University discovered that the shade only emerged off the back of a genetic “mutation” in Europe. As reported by the Daily Express, this only popped up around 10,000 years ago.

Digging into the mutation

Now, the deviation didn’t cause the blue to emerge outright. Instead, it stopped the production of brown melanin in the iris, leading to the shade’s arrival. Should this ever come up at a quiz night, you’ll be set! Anyway, the Danish college also did some digging regarding the perception folks have of blue-eyed individuals.

Negative perception

Apparently, of those to whom the university spoke, plenty believed that the blue shade had ties to arrogance, ruthlessness, and a lack of compassion. Oof. Not the most positive of traits, right? But was their assessment accurate? Honigman and Lenstore certainly didn’t think so after completing their own analysis in 2022.

“Emotional and spiritual”

Continuing her conversation with the Daily Express, Honigman said, “Blue eyes invoke the water element. It’ll make us think of the seaside, of romance, and of faith. People with this color of eyes will be emotional and spiritual.” Quite a difference! And much like before, Lenstore chipped in with when wearing blue contact lenses could be an effective ploy.

“Rekindle a romance”

Folks at the company told the U.K. newspaper, “Choosing blue contacts may be a good option for someone who is looking to rekindle a romance and improve its longevity.” Meanwhile, a project from 2005 revealed a few more potential links between the color and people’s personalities. We already heard about one of them earlier.

Post-pregnancy

Yes, that research project flagged up the idea that kids with blue eyes were more likely to keep their guards raised when spending time in groups. Away from that, it also noted that ladies sporting the shade seemed to have a lower chance of developing post-pregnancy issues such as depression and anxiety.

Amber eyes

What’s next? Well, step up color number five: amber. On the shade scale, it sits between green and brown, with a gold-like sheen to it. Yet the hue can vary a bit in different people. For instance, some eyes will have a closer resemblance to copper.

Self-awareness

As for the associations with people’s personalities, the website Icy Tales did some research. Reportedly, those with amber peepers show signs of incredible self-awareness, while boasting a laser-like focus on the future as well. The site claims that helps folks feel more comfortable in their presence.

So much positivity!

On top of that, amber-eyed individuals are said to be supremely empathetic with people around them. Apparently, they can pick up on issues before a word’s even uttered. Talk about a cool skill! Plus, Icy Tales noted that they’ve normally got an infectiously positive outlook, too.

Lots of passion

Elsewhere, Icy Tales also claimed that those with amber eyes tend to have an abundance of passion bubbling inside them. Supposedly, their commitment to their loved ones is second-to-none, be they pal or relative. The Inscriber Mag website backed that suggestion up as well, noting that amber-eyed people’s social circles usually aren’t that large.

Outdoors-lover

Oh and one more thing, folks. Both Icy Tale and The Inscriber Mag claim that people with an amber shade can feel a strong draw to the great outdoors. They’re reportedly pretty active, and won’t shun suggestions of spending time away from the house. The former described them as “dauntless.”

The final shade...

That’s quite the selection of traits! Now, it’s time to move on to the sixth and final color on the list. Yep, the hazel shade has our undivided attention from here.

Hazel eyes

To help characterize the hue, firm Eye Doctors of Washington shared a description via its website. It read, “Hazel eyes mostly consist of shades of brown and green. Individuals whose eyes appear to be one color closest to the pupil, another color a little farther out, and another color around the edge of the iris are likely to have hazel eyes.”

Uncanny resemblance

The shade itself gets its name due to how much it looks like a hazelnut’s shell. Makes sense! Anyway, South West Londoner reported on an analysis linking hazel eyes with character traits. And one particular finding really stuck out…

Independent

It’s said that hazel-eyed people are extremely self-sufficient, with no problem looking after themselves — and not just during adulthood! In fact, the website claims that this trait often emerges when they’re still youngsters. That’s sure to pique the interest of a lot of parents!

Impulsive acts

In addition to the independence, the website noted that folks with hazel peepers can also act impulsively on occasion. Of course, that can be both a good and a bad thing! Oh, and they’re allegedly self-assured, too.

Looking ahead

After all that, something tells us that you’re going to be reflecting on the accuracy of the analyses for a while. But you should keep this in mind — the experts aren’t finished yet. The research is set to continue, and we can’t wait to hear more…
