New Homeowners Who Found Creepy ‘Remnants’ Of The Previous Owners Inside

A mannequin head stuffed down the toilet. A sinister bottle marked poison. Clown dolls stuffed under the porch: 37 of them. These are just a few of the things that have confronted people upon moving into a new home. Read on and you’ll find that the habit of abandoning weird stuff when moving on is all-too-common — and often downright sinister…

40. Monkey in attic

We think we have found a surefire winner in the “Most grotesque toy ever” contest. With its bared teeth, staring eyes and weirdly disjointed ankles, this monkey is truly terrifying. Worse, it looks like it’s probably a clockwork puppet that can bang those cymbals. So imagine what it felt like when someone stumbled across it in the attic of their new home…

39. The End

This family moved into a vintage home built in the 1940s. So far so good. But then they noticed a message scrawled in capitals on the top step of the basement stairs reading, “THE END.” That’s it in its entirety. Perhaps the previous occupants were Doors fans. Or it could be something altogether more worrisome. We’ll never know.

38. Baby carriage in attic

Attics can be spooky in their own right. But top–of-house storage which includes an abandoned baby carriage is worse than that. What happened to the baby? Anyway, it certainly seems to have preyed on the mind of the finder, judging by their Reddit posting. It simply reads, “I should never have opened the attic.”

37. A painting

The previous resident of this home seems to have gone to some pains to conceal their dubious handiwork. For this monstrosity was hidden in the laundry room, stuffed behind the washing machine. Mind you, if we’d painted that, we’d be keen to conceal it too. Actually, we probably would have burned it out of consideration for others!

36. Secret room

There’s no getting away from it: finding a secret room in the house into which you’ve just moved is going to creep you out. And this Reddit contributor found an especially strange one. A short flight of wooden stairs actually lifted up to reveal the concealed chamber. Of course, the horrifying question is, just what was the purpose of this clandestine room?

35. Mannequin head in toilet

So you visit the bathroom at your exciting new home for the first time. Unfortunately in this case the toilet is one of the most disgusting you’ve ever seen. Not a good start. But things go downhill from there. Looking into the bowl, you’re confronted by the staring eyes of a mannequin. Dismaying or what? We’ve got to be talking post-traumatic stress disorder.

34. Ex-owner’s bodyprint on floor

The previous resident of a house can leave all kinds of mementoes of themselves behind. Forgotten ornaments, discarded clothing, even old food in the fridge. But how about a body outline on the floor? That’s really going too far. And the questions it raises hardly bear thinking about. Let’s hope it was just a prank…

33. Creepy old woman doll

A Reddit poster actually found this disturbingly sinister old lady doll in a cellar during a house sale. But with its lank locks and decaying teeth it’s so weird that we just had to include it. Why would anyone want to own something as utterly gruesome as this? It’s a fair question:  we just don’t have a plausible answer.

32. Sinister ceiling message

You’ve just moved into your lovely new home. When you find the room that’s going to be your bedroom, there’s nothing more natural than to flop down on the bed. But then you study the ceiling more closely for the first time, and there’s a message written on it, faint but unmistakable. It reads, “I’m under the bed.” Well, that just changed the mood…

31. Clowns under porch

If the previous residents of your new home haven’t been too fastidious about clearing their stuff out, you might find all kinds of things left behind. A clown doll for example. Maybe even more than one clown doll. But fully 37 of the scary puppets stashed under the porch? That is way beyond anything normal.

30. Door puzzle

Exploring the basement of your new home can reveal a lot about the former occupants. But what are we to make of this doorway blocked off by a large set of shelves? Worryingly, the Reddit poster who revealed this enigma pointed out that the door did not lead out of the house. So where did it lead? We’re left guessing — and fearing the worst.

29. Abandoned rocking chair

This unfortunate renter was troubled by a leak from above. So they went into the attic to see if they could find the source of the unwanted water. The attic was empty but for one item of furniture; an old rocking chair, apparently placed right above the tenant's bed. Yet another one of those spooky tales without obvious rhyme or reason.

28. Far too many spiders

After moving to this house, the new tenants discovered there was a basement corridor below the floor. One of them described what happened next on Reddit, saying, “I managed to squeeze my phone in one of the cracks of the door to take this creepy picture.” Looks like the spiders may be preparing for a full-scale house invasion. Could be time to move out.

27. Lethal-looking knives

This picture appears to show some kind of crawl-space with a water tank. But what makes it stand out is the fearsome collection of rusting knives. Perhaps the previous resident was a keen cook? But it’s all too easy to imagine a much more disturbing explanation for all those discarded blades. We’d be hoping the former tenant had moved far, far away.

26. “It never stops”

A couple moved into a new house together and the woman decided to share on Reddit a rather distinctive feature in their new home. It was a message that someone had daubed right above a bedroom door. It read,“IT NEVER STOPS.” What never stops? Difficult to believe it’s anything either pleasant or wholesome.

25. “Do you see him?”

So you arrive at your splendid new home and naturally enough, you want to do a bit of exploring. That’s got to include the attic. And there lying on the floor is an old Polaroid photograph. Curiosity piqued, you pick it up. However someone has scrawled a message on it, “Do you see him?” But the image is blank, just black. Unsettling.

24. Spooky ouija board

Ouija boards are kind of eerie in their own right wherever they turn up. But finding one left behind in your new home is particularly disturbing. Especially if looks really old and has apparently seen plenty of use over the years. Let’s hope that any spirits that were conjured up by the board are not still hanging around...

23. Unexplained padlock

You rent a new home, maybe after only seeing some photographs of the property. What you didn’t notice was the locked door down in the darkness of the basement. And it’s a door for which you have no key. Now you’re just going to have to wonder what might be behind that barred doorway, lurking beneath you in the cellar.

22. A padlocked trunk

So you find a large wooden trunk in your new home. Kind of intriguing, isn’t it? But why is the luggage locked up with a couple of padlocks? The mystery is deepened by the fact that the former tenant apparently left the trunk behind all of five years ago. So what on Earth could be in it? Perhaps best not to over-think this one.

21. Sinister handprint

This tale starts with a locked door in the basement, firmly secured with a padlock. That’s kind of worrisome already. But what’s much worse is the clear handprint on the door. The question is, has someone just dipped their hand in paint before making their mark? Or was the medium used something much more gruesome? Maybe it’s time to call in a forensics team…

20. Secret bathroom

It’s great to have more than one bathroom in your house. But it gets a little strange when one of said bathrooms is concealed. Apparently, the new occupant of this house had spotted a drainpipe emerging from a wall. So they made a hole to investigate and found an entire secret bathroom complete with a toilet, artworks — and a box of tissues.

19. Stashed vintage recording equipment

In this case, a new tenant found out something really disturbing about a former occupant. Hidden in a closet was a complete set of old-fashioned recording equipment. According to the Reddit poster on this one, 20 years earlier the man of the house had been recording his wife’s phone calls. The conversations were all there on cassette tapes. Hair-raising.

18. A macabre tattoo

This gruesome artifact was found in an old house. Contained in an envelope was a tattoo which had apparently been removed from somebody called Mr. Pendleton’s arm back in 1926. It had then been affixed to a piece of cotton. This weird item raises plenty of questions. For a start, why would you cut a tattoo of your arm? And once you’d done that, why would you file it away in an envelope?

17. Secret room with alarming letter

One person moved into a new house and in a phenomenon that’s rapidly becoming all-too-familiar here, they found a secret room. But what was really alarming was the typewritten letter they found inside the concealed chamber. The words gave a disquieting insight into what appeared to be an unbalanced mind. Among other things, it read, “We are amongst you in this city.” Who’s amongst us? We don’t care to imagine…

16. Crawl space with highly disturbing contents

In this house a room had been constructed in a concealed crawl space. And it contained a distinctly weird set of objects. These included an attaché case with jewelry, foreign currency, and silver bullion. Plus there was a stack of old video tapes. One of them was titled “No no no no” with a message attached reading, “Save yourself.” Ominous, and more than a little threatening.

15. Notify a priest

So this guy had just bought himself an old house dating back to 1913. He was doing some improvement work on his property — specifically, building a patio in the yard — when he dug up some very strange stuff. As well as some old bones, there were dog tags with the message, “I am a Catholic. In case of accident please notify a priest.” Let’s hope the bones and the tag had no connection.

14. Concealed camera

It’s always unsettling to find out something you’d rather not know about a stranger who previously lived in your new home. And in this case it turned out the predecessor was basically an utter creep: a secret voyeur no less. Why? Well, mounted behind a mirror was a video camera. Of course, it might not have been down to a previous occupant. Maybe it was the landlord. But that’s just as bad, and maybe even worse.

13. Doll’s face embedded in wall

This one is really strange. A tiny doll’s face has been cut from the rest of the toy’s head. It’s then been stuck onto a brick wall near some piping. You could probably walk past it dozens of times without even spotting it. But once you do, there’s no taking your eyes off it. And the doll’s spooky, staring eyes make the situation no better at all.

12. Clandestine apartment

One woman in New York City noticed something strange in the bathroom of her new apartment. She could feel a distinct draught blowing from behind the bathroom mirror. So she removed it and what she found was a real shock. There was a hole cut in the wall and it actually gave access to an entire secret room. For some reason, it included an unconnected toilet. Why? We just don’t know.

11. Bunker in the backyard

This new homeowner spotted a large, rusting metal door set into the yard’s lawn. In fact, you could hardly miss it. Once the hatch was opened, a flight of steps led down to a bunker. Inside, there were old metal bedsteads. And especially disturbing were the chains that festooned the space. Not to mention the weird soil-toilet.

10. Grotesque figurine

Once you get into your new apartment, of course you’re keen to get your stuff unpacked and make the place into a home. Well, that’s just what this unfortunate person did — until they were stopped short by something truly bizarre stashed inside a closet. A spooky figurine of indescribable ugliness lay face-down on the floor. Not a great welcome.

9. Secret cellar door leads to 19th-century labyrinth

After moving into his new apartment this guy noticed something strange on the bathroom floor. Covered to match the timber flooring there was a hatchway. Once opened it revealed an extraordinary series of passages, one of which led to an actual dungeon. So why would someone have a secret dungeon beneath their bathroom? Your guess is as good as ours.

8. Plastic bathroom seat with razors

So you’ve just moved into your new home and it’s time to check out the facilities. The bathroom facilities, that is. The toilet is all there, present and correct. But the seat and lid are far from normal. Inlaid into both is an array of old-fashioned razor blades. Now that is hardly going to make for a psychologically comfortable experience…

7. Secret bathroom peephole

Another person here who found something that’s not only creepy, but illegal. The new resident was putting some new wiring in the guest bathroom when they stumbled across a small hole drilled through the wall. At the other side of the hole was a workroom. And that aperture offered a ringside view of the shower stall.

6. Horrifying X-ray

It’s a kind of weird thing to find in a new home — a box containing old X-rays. But it was worse than just weird: it was positively freaky. Because one of the ghostly images appeared to show a fork stabbed right through someone’s face in a way that looked like it might well have been a fatal blow. Was this evidence of a murder? A terrifying thought.

5. Tombstone in backyard

It’s great to get a place with its own backyard. Usually. But what about finding that there’s an actual tombstone set in your new garden? And this sinister gravestone had just one word engraved on it: “Wife.” So had somebody actually buried their wife in their own backyard? That is beyond peculiar.

4. Malign doll montage

This is the stuff of horror movies. This person found a montage of images crudely cut from catalogs and magazines emblazoned on a wall in their new apartment. Not just a few images, but hundreds. We suppose you could say it was merely the work of an amateur artist. But judging by the way the images are mounted, it looks very much like the product of a seriously diseased mind.

3. Dad’s teeth

After moving into a new home this person found an envelope. Not too scary on its own. But written on it were the words “Dad’s 2 Sharp Teeth + Photo.” And sure enough, inside the envelope there were two teeth and a photograph. The two teeth are gruesome to say the least. But it’s the photo that really puzzles. A kid stands in front of a tank in a playground. What’s the connection with the teeth? We have no idea.

2. Backyard dungeon

This person described their strange find in a new home they’d rented. In their own words, they discovered a “dungeon built into the hill right behind the house.” That’s a long way from the normal run of amenities you’d expect to find in a rental. The guy asked around the neighborhood to see if anyone could cast light on this unsettling strangeness. Nope, nobody had a clue.

1. Old bottle marked “Poison”

The basement: that’s where you often find weird things in a new home. And this basement was no exception. For in there, was an old green bottle with a label which simply read, “POISON.” The bottle was half-full — which would tend to indicate that some of this poison had been used. Now there’s something to keep you awake at night.
