When a child begins showing signs of artistic ability, it’s the parent’s job to nurture their creative leanings into something bigger. So when six-year-old Dom began doodling, his dad leapt to his support by posting his creations on Instagram. However, he couldn’t help adding his own special touch via a little digital trickery…
In fact, through the power of Photoshop, Dom’s dad has turned this abstract drawing of a car into something more “realistic.” With its wonky wheels and misplaced headlights, the image shows just how far from reality Dom’s creations are – and they’re all the more adorable for it. And these 19 other pictures are just as charmingly hilarious.
Like most kids, Dom loves drawing his favorite animals. That includes the clown fish, as this doodle clearly shows. But – when given a real-life spin – the image resembles something closer to a fishy horror film than Finding Nemo.
Similarly, this sketch of a zebra looks more like a stripey brontosaurus than its equine counterpart. However, its contented grin makes this creation a winningly sweet equivalent to its real-life version.
Other items in Dom’s repertoire include some of his favorite toys, like his bike, for example. But while it looks like a fun redesign of a famous model, we can imagine the real-life version of this being rather tricky to actually ride.
And since beginning the Instagram account just over a year ago, Dom’s dad – whose name remains unknown – has found a suitable platform for his son’s art. Furthermore, his Photoshopped creations have gained a considerable following online, with thousands tuning in to witness Dom’s oddly enchanting world.
His first post was a drawing of his pet moggy, which dad spruced up to resemble a walking salami. Beside the image is a caption that reads, “I’ll start with a picture I’ve drawn of my cat. You might be surprised, but she does look like that.”
Certainly, part of these pictures’ charm comes from the poetic captions Dom’s dad includes with each post. And – thanks to their naive simplicity – they provide a rather adorable look at life through the eyes of a child.
For instance, this sketch of an oddly proportioned sheep comes with the following description: “I know it’s surprising, some things that I draw. But I promise this lamb had just three legs, not four.”
Because of Dom’s, shall we say, unique eye, his Instagram account has already amassed a considerable amount of attention. In fact, the account, which has over 120 posts, has already gained more than 54,000 enthusiastic followers.
And needless to say, the account’s comment section is full of followers voicing their appreciation for Dom and dad’s work. For example, user @daveeed00 wrote, “These pictures are amazing!” Likewise, @deleted_noone_ called the account “the most creative and inspiring thing ever.”
Additionally, it seems that many of Dom’s followers share his childlike view of the world. Alongside one extremely literal interpretation of a sea horse, user @xkristiax admitted, “This is what I thought a sea horse looked like… until the real thing ruined it for me.”
And while most of Dom’s drawings are just downright cute, there are others that aren’t quite as pleasing to the eye. Indeed, some creations are so bizarre that they’re guaranteed to give you a sleepless night.
This lion, for example, may have its mouth curved upwards in a smile, but there’s something deeply disconcerting with the rest of its face. Perhaps it’s the buzz saw mane, or the eyes twisted out of all recognition. Whatever it is, this image is beyond terrifying.
Indeed, it seems that Dom’s fans find some of his dad’s Photoshop efforts just a little too disturbing. In response to this image of his father – which features severely contorted facial features – user @lisbeth_dianne wrote, “This is so creepy.”
And although there are quite a few nightmarish drawings in Dom’s collection, the majority of his images when juxtaposed with his dad’s reimaginings are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. For example, this robot dinosaur is bound to raise a chuckle, thanks in no small part to the suspicious plume of fire coming out of its behind.
Meanwhile, Star Wars fans will no doubt find this picture hilarious. Look closely: while the terrified-looking figure hiding at the back may be a little short for a Stormtrooper, there’s also something definitely wrong with his helmet.
And while the account is mainly just a bit of fun between father and son, it seems that the page could become more than just a hobby. In fact, several high-profile users have already been in touch on Instagram with offers of work.
A Dutch television producer, for instance, got in touch, asking the pair to share their story on a talk show. Subsequently, a book publisher contacted them about a “business op,” hinting that a bright future lies ahead for the creative duo.
And it’s not just Dom whose drawings have been given a digital makeover, either. This sketch of a spaceship on its way to Mars was doodled by Dom’s little brother, Al. And judging by the ship’s wonky design, it seems that young Al shares his sibling’s eye for unique images.
Given Dom and dad’s popularity, we wouldn’t be surprised to eventually see their work appearing beyond their Instagram posts. But, for now, they’re sure to keep on amusing and surprising social media users for many months to come.
