For some wedding guests, the moment a bride shares a dance with her father can often be the highlight of a wedding. But as Lisa White Getz’s father twirled her in front of all her friends and family, she had no idea that he was turning her toward the stage for an amazing surprise.
On April 24, 2015, White Getz announced some very exciting news to her Facebook friends: she was engaged to Paul Getz. “I’m so beyond excited to be marrying my best friend and the love of my life,” she shared on the social media site.
And in the months to follow, the couple set a date for their nuptials: August 27, 2016. They also selected their wedding party, including White Getz’s four maids of honor, and hired a band called Jellyroll to play at their reception.
By the time the big day rolled around, then, the stage was set at their gorgeous reception hall, Vie, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Yes, chandeliers dangled over a white, shiny dance floor, and the newlyweds’ monogram flashed on screens throughout the venue.
And eventually, it came time for the father-daughter dance. White Getz and her father, David, chose the song “My Little Girl” by country crooner Tim McGraw for this traditional wedding shuffle. So as the pair walked onto the dance floor, Jellyroll readied their instruments. But little did White Getz know that she was in for a huge surprise. For, as she and her father began swaying back and forth, a very special guest walked out on stage.
Yet even the guests didn’t notice the visitor at first. In fact, it wasn’t until the surprise guest opened his mouth that the crowd started cheering. His voice was easy to recognize, after all. Then it was only White Getz who didn’t realize what was happening – until her father twirled her around to show her.
White Getz exclaimed, “Oh my god!” as soon as she realized that the man singing on stage was Tim McGraw himself. Her father then did his best to ensure that she kept dancing despite the shock she felt watching the A-lister on stage.
White Getz later told KSON radio in San Diego, California, just how genuine her surprise was. “It really took me quite a few seconds to process what was happening,” she said. “My first initial reaction was, ‘Oh, is this a Tim McGraw impersonator?’”
But he was the real thing, and it was all a surprise planned by her father, David. “Mr. White was the only person who knew it was happening,” White Getz’s sister-in-law told CBS Philly. “Tim was there for two hours backstage beforehand and that’s when he and Mr. White planned how the surprise would go down.”
At the end of the song, the crowd erupted into applause and cheers for McGraw. After she thanked her dad with a huge hug, White Getz walked up to the superstar singer and embraced him, too.
Yet the surprise was far from over. That night, in fact, McGraw put on a whole concert for the couple’s reception. In total, he performed 11 of his songs, including the smash hit “Live Like You Were Dying.”
Days after their incredible surprise, White Getz spoke to KSON and said she still had no idea how her father had pulled off such a stunt. “He still will not reveal any of his secrets,” she said.
However, she did say that this type of behavior was her dad’s trademark. “He is one for making big surprises happen,” White Getz said. “He pulled the surprise of a lifetime off obviously.”
During the same interview, White Getz revealed that she and her husband had had the chance to speak with McGraw for a few minutes after his performance, too. “He was so gracious, so lovely, so wonderful,” she said.
White Getz also said that the surprise had tugged at the country crooner’s heartstrings as well. She said, “[He was] gushing about the fact that he has three daughters, and he looks forward to having similar special moments with them one day.”
And even though their radio interview took place a few days after their reception, both White Getz and her husband were still in shock. “We’re still blown away and still kind of trying to process it all,” she said. “It was unbelievable,” Getz added.
The interviewers then asked the couple if they’d be guests at Tim McGraw’s daughters’ weddings one day – or if they’d make a surprise appearance like he had at theirs. “I sure hope we’re invited,” White Getz jokingly replied.
After their unforgettable wedding reception, the Getzes embarked on another memory-making adventure together. Indeed, the newlyweds traveled to a luxury Sandals resort in St. Lucia for their honeymoon.
And nearly a year after that, they had another piece of exciting news to share. This time, though, it wasn’t a video, but a photo – a sonogram, more specifically. Yes, White Getz shared on Facebook that the pair would soon welcome their first child.
And although the video of their wedding reception has racked up nearly two million views on Facebook and YouTube, the Getzes now have their eyes on something else. After all, their son, Paul, was born in the spring of 2018.
