This Beauty Vlogger Applied 100 Layers of Makeup, And It Looks Totally Insane

For some godforsaken reason, the “100 layers makeup” trend has taken YouTube by storm, with beauty bloggers everywhere emptying out their cosmetic bottles and painstakingly applying layer upon layer of warpaint for no apparent reason. Comedian and vlogger favorite Jenna Marbles, however, decided it was nigh time she got involved. But Marbles wasn’t going to settle for 100 slicks of lipstick or 100 coats of mascara. Oh no, she was going all out. Yes, Marbles pledged to put on 100 layers of everything, and she filmed the whole process, too. Goodbye dignity!

Jenna Marbles – real name Jenna Mourey – has made a name for herself with her hilarious videos, both makeup- and non makeup-related. In fact, in March 2016 her particular brand of pointed humor saw her rise to become the most popular woman on YouTube. Oh, and it’s also made her millions of dollars to boot.

So what’s a woman worth $4.5 million to do with all that money? Well, how about blowing some of it on enough nail polish, lipstick, hairspray, spray tan, foundation and pairs of false eyelashes to cover a face 100 times? Yep. That’s exactly what Marbles did.

The comic didn’t take this challenge lightly, either. Nope, she put in plenty of preparation: she placed a flannel over her couch to prevent any staining, gathered all her products together and told the internet to pray for her skin and her lips. And she was going to need those prayers, too, as she set about masking her skin with layer number one.

And it all started off well, to be honest. The purple lipstick and the foundation gave Marbles a cute Gothic look. But then her boyfriend, Julien Solomita, pointed out how long this entire process was going to take: probably around ten hours. Yup, ten hours.

Nevertheless Marbles didn’t, in her own words, come here to play games. And so on and on she went with the makeup. By just the tenth layer, however, the determined vlogger admitted she was starting to feel “gross.” Not to mention the fact that she was starting to look like a female version of the Joker.

By step 21, then, Marbles was starting to flag. Unfortunately, she still had a long way to go. She had also started to notice an unfortunate side effect of applying 100 layers of lipstick to your mouth: a lot of it inevitably winds up on your teeth.

Not surprisingly, there were unfortunate side effects to applying 21 layers of spray tan, too. “A bug flew into it and killed itself on it. A bug literally kamikaze-d into my arm,” she said. “Your arm looks like a hot dog,” replied her boyfriend.

“This is your face. This is your face on drugs,” Marbles says as she reaches step 30 and morphs closer and closer into a demented cartoon character. Then it’s time for the eyes. Marbles says she’s “only” applying 50 sets of lashes to each eye instead of 100 sets, which would probably be physically impossible. And her falsies are way out of control already.

Five hours into her epic experiment, Marbles starts to have serious concerns about her hair. “I have no idea what happens when you put that much hairspray in your hair, like, is my hair going to fall out?” she wonders. “That would suck. It wouldn’t be worth it at all.”

When Marbles applies her 50th pair of eyelashes, she’s officially reached the midway point of her challenge. “I did not cheat at all!” she boasts. “I did not stack [the lashes] at any point! I glued them all on individually.” And they look absolutely horrific.

By the 60th coat, Marbles notices she has a celebrity doppelganger. “I look just like f**king Janice!” And Solomita dutifully holds a picture of the famous Muppet up to the camera to demonstrate the uncanny resemblance.

Solomita has some more “helpful” comments as his girlfriend slaps yet more makeup on. “You look like you cut Jenna’s face off and are wearing it as a face,” he remarks at one point. Finally, Marbles is on the final stretch, but don’t worry: there are more horrors to come.

“I’m having a hard time with this liquid lipstick,” Marbles says. “Now that we’re this far in, it really refuses to dry.” No kidding. “I STILL DON’T GOT THAT KYLIE LIPKIT, SO I HAD TO DO THIS!” she yells at the camera.

But the spray tan proves even more problematic than the lipstick layering. In fact, all those layers of bronze have turned Marbles’ hand black. And since research indicates that the chemicals in spray tan are potentially dangerous — especially if it is used excessively — it’s probably best not to try this one at home.

Ninety layers and “so many” hours later, Marbles is starting to get hungry. But how on earth could anyone eat with their mouth clumped together with makeup? “Ten more. I can do it,” Marbles says, bravely persevering despite the fact that her face is now a gruesome slimy mask.

Finally, covered in gunk and mess and with lipstick smeared all over her arms and teeth, Marbles has achieved her goal. “I f**king did it!” she yells at the camera. And sure, she can barely see or eat and her arm is black and shiny, but mission accomplished!

The three nails she painted with 100 layers of polish now look like little sparkling balls on the ends of her fingers. “They’re my favorite part of this,” says Solomita. “Why?” asks Marbles. “Because I hate everything else,” says her boyfriend.

“I don’t think I would wish this experience on anyone ever,” remarks Marbles from underneath the lipstick. “I don’t know why I did this to myself. It just feels so wrong. My face, at this point, feels like I’m not sure if it can ever feel clean again.” Okay, so maybe time to try cleaning it?

And so next Marbles treats the viewers who’ve made it this far to the sight of her taking off all the makeup. And it is not an easy feat. “I REGRET EVERYTHING!” she wails as she swipes tissues across the disaster area. The things a YouTube star does. But hey, she did get over eight million views on the video! Worth it.
