Unless you’ve been living under a rock over the past month or so, you’ve probably seen coverage of the February 2019 Oscars. It’s been all over the news for one reason or another, both on television and the internet. And although hosts presented many notable awards, one particular performance arguably stole the spotlight.

Specifically, everyone’s been talking about the duet Lady Gaga performed with her fellow A Star Is Born actor Bradley Cooper. During a respite in the award announcements, the pair sang “Shallow,” a romantic hit from the movie. Their palpable chemistry wowed both the hall’s audience and those watching at home.

Neither of the stars are strangers to the limelight, especially not the singer/songwriter-turned-actor Lady Gaga. She’s known for her eclectic hits such as “Poker Face” and “Bad Romance”. Her visually striking music videos are also a testament to Gaga’s other claim to fame – a unique fashion sense.

Indeed, Lady Gaga has made headlines with her controversial wardrobe and unusual dresses, such as her famous meat outfit. But although she’s caused something of a stir on occasion, the performer is also a noted philanthropist. For example, Gaga has used proceeds from some of her tours and online stores to aid in disaster relief.

Furthermore, Gaga has described herself as “sexually empowering women” with her performances. She has spoken out for L.G.B.T. causes on numerous occasions and she has also founded a non-profit organization with a focus on encouraging young people. She named it the Born This Way Foundation, after one of her popular songs and albums.

In addition, Gaga has made several screen appearances in movies over the years. Her most prominent role, however, is the most recent; a remake of the 1937 film A Star Is Born. It’s actually the third time that Hollywood has revisited the original, which starred Janet Gaynor in her Technicolor debut.

In the latest version of A Star Is Born, Gaga plays an aspiring singer named Ally. Her path crosses the troubled country music star Jack Maine and the film follows their growing relationship. Bradley Cooper not only plays Maine, but he also produces the movie and directs for the first time.

A Star Is Born may be Cooper’s only film as a director, but it’s far from his first movie in general. He initially rose to fame for his part in 2009’s The Hangover and has since won several acting awards. But you might be more familiar with his vocal talents as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s trigger-happy Rocket Raccoon.

So, what’s all the fuss surrounding Cooper and Gaga’s Oscar performance? Well, it began when staff wheeled a piano onstage. Cooper and Gaga rose from their seats hand-in-hand. Once they’d taken position, the pair began an emotional duet of the song “Shallow” from A Star Is Born.

The song kept everyone in the audience captivated, as well as the singers themselves. They gazed into each other’s eyes for the majority of their memorizing performance, which culminated in a mic-sharing finale. In fact, it was all so intimate that it sparked rumors that the Gaga-Cooper romance was real.

Suspicion that Gaga was no longer with her fiancé added fuel to the fire. The singer got engaged to talent agent Christian Carino in November 2017 but fans noticed something was wrong. When Gaga attended the February 2019 Grammy Awards, her finger was noticeably missing an engagement ring.

Gaga dropped another hint in her acceptance speech at the 2019 Grammys. There, she collected a Best Pop Duo/Group Performance Grammy for “Shallow” on behalf of herself and Cooper. At the end of Gaga’s tear-filled address, one person remained unmentioned – and his exclusion spoke volumes.

“Thank you so much,” Gaga gushed during her acceptance speech at the awards. “I gotta thank God. Thank you for looking out for me, thank you for my family at home, I love you… I wish Bradley was here with me right now… Bradley, I loved singing this song with you.”

Gaga missed Carino from her speech and one of her representatives confirmed their split with People. Additionally, the magazine had a statement from an unidentified source on the topic. “It just didn’t work out,” the insider reportedly said. “Relationships sometimes end, there’s no long dramatic story.” But Cooper’s relationship status is another matter entirely.

Cooper originally married Crash and Spin City actress Jennifer Esposito in 2006 but they split up a year later. Cooper started dating supermodel Irina Shayk in 2015 and they have a daughter called Lea De Seine Shayk Cooper. However, this fact has done little to prevent the swirling rumors of a Cooper-Gaga relationship.

The media has since been picking apart Hollywood’s responses to the heart-melting “Shallow” duet, starting with those present at the performance. Mel B of the Spice Girls fame spoke to Good Morning Britain about her feelings on the subject. “I felt so uncomfortable for Bradley’s girlfriend, oh my gosh,” she said of Shayk.

On the other hand, Mel B made it clear that she wasn’t accusing the singers of anything untoward. “But I would like to think it was part of the whole performance,” she continued. “Because there’s a women’s code and hopefully that’s not… hopefully it’s only professional.”

The ex-Spice Girl wasn’t the only celebrity to air their opinion on the duet, either. Comedian and actor David Spade also weighed in with a comment over social media. “Is there any chance these two aren’t f***ing?” he captioned an Instagram picture. A surprising source then responded to the upload.

Jennifer Esposito, Cooper’s ex-wife, replied simply with the word, “Ha.” Media sources were quick to jump on the comment, but the actress made an IGTV post explaining her response. “It was towards David Spade’s very outward statement about something about an ex,” she said.

“I literally laughed at him because he was so bold in what he was saying,” the actress elaborated. “And I thought it was funny. I’m allowed to think something is funny.” But the chemistry between Gaga and Cooper also had the general public in a flutter over the thought of romance.

As you can imagine fan reactions varied wildly, but the moment swept up a lot of people. “Why yes, I did scream ‘KISS!’ from the balcony of the Dolby Theatre,” one person tweeted. Another social media user added, “Wait, they cut away just as they were about to make out.”

Other watchers couldn’t help but put themselves in Shayk’s position, which reflected in their comments. “I also would have tiptoed backstage so they couldn’t cut to me if I were that man’s wife,” an observer wrote. One fan contributed, “I’m sorry, but if you’re Bradley’s wife, aren’t you just… slightly… nervous?”

Since the performance, many have been questioning Shayk’s opinion on the intimate duet, but she’s offered no official comment. However, people in the audience caught her reaction to the “Shallow” performance and it speaks volumes. Was she as nervous or jealous as Twitter users assumed?

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the tension between Gaga and Shayk is all imaginary. In fact, Shayk appears to be nothing but proud of her husband and the singer. To begin with, all three parties sat together both before and after the duet. That’s not to mention Shayk’s moving response to the performance.

Chris Gardner, who works for The Hollywood Reporter, caught Shayk’s reaction on camera and shared it on social media. “Here’s what standing ovation looked like inside Dolby for @ladygaga and Bradley Cooper after their “Shallow” #Oscars performance,” he wrote. “Irina Shayk was first up out of her seat.”

Not only did Shayk seemingly instigate the ovation, she also welcomed the singers back to their seats when they returned. Furthermore, she gave Gaga a hug from her seat after the duet, indicating approval. So what is the actual situation between Cooper and his co-star? Gaga has recently revealed the truth.

Gaga spoke frankly on the subject in an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! after Kimmel addressed the big question. “I can tell, I know you put a lot of work into everything you do,” he told her. “And that performance that you and Bradley gave, that was really one of the great performances in the history of the Oscars.”

“It was like… I mean… we were watching it at home,” he continued. “And we were like, ‘Oh my, what is going on between these two?’ I know it caused this big controversy. Because you had such a connection with Bradley that instantly… people started saying, ‘They must be in love.’”

“First of all, social media, quite frankly, is the toilet of the internet,” Gaga replied. “And what it has done to pop culture is just, like, abysmal.” Then she revealed the truth behind her relationship with Cooper. It’s nothing like what excitable fans would have you believe.

Gaga continued, “Yes, people saw love, and guess what? That’s what we wanted you to see. This is a love song, “Shallow.” The movie A Star Is Born is a love story.” It turns out that the entire performance was orchestrated by herself and Cooper and evidently their preparation paid off.

“We worked so hard,” Gaga described. “We worked all week on that performance… You know, I never relinquish control of a live stage performance, I’ve done a million of them. But [Cooper] directed this film and he directed all of the, obviously, musical moments in the film.”

As a result of her experience under Cooper’s direction, Gaga revealed that she wanted his opinion on the performance. So she deferred to him on the stage direction for the Oscars duet that tricked everyone into seeing love. “He laid it all out,” Gaga said of Cooper’s plans.

“Everything that you saw, the way that it was shot, the way they pushed the piano out,” Gaga said. “You saw them put the piano together, us walk up on stage, no intro, all of it. That was all him.” He even suggested lighting the audience instead of just himself and Gaga.

The singer went on to describe the experience and how the duet evoked such an intimate feeling. Gaga explained, “It was just great and from a performance perspective it was just so important to both of us that we were connected the entire time.” It was all part of their act.

“When you’re singing love songs, that’s what you want people to feel,” the A Star Is Born actress said. “I’m an artist and I guess we did a good job. Fooled ya!” Kimmel also asked Gaga about Cooper’s feelings on the duet, since he’s been predominantly known as an actor.

“Bradley did a great job,” Kimmel said. “And I’ve known him for a long time. It’s one thing to go onstage and sing on the Oscars; that’s terrifying just to start. But then to sing with you and to be trading lines with you! In a movie you can pick and choose, but when you’re on live television… was he terrified?”

Gaga described Cooper as nothing but professional, both in his live performance and on set. “No, because we practiced and we worked hard,” she said. “Bradley’s a musician. My favorite thing about the whole experience was that I was just so excited for people… to see him sing live.”

“He sang every take in this movie live, every single time,” Gaga continued. And when Cooper sang his first line of “Shallow” at the Oscars, it wasn’t just the audience cheering. Gaga said at that moment, she was also encouraging him internally. She knew they had the room hooked.

She concluded, “I was so excited and I was in the moment. But you know, when we started and he started singing, ‘Tell me something, girl,” the whole audience started cheering. And I was like, ‘Yes Bradley, yes, they love it, keep going! We’ve got this!’ It was great.”
