The personal life of a celebrity can be filled with ups and downs for any number of reasons. The beloved musician Neil Young can certainly attest to that. He was, after all, married for 36 years before he divorced wife Pegi in 2014. And, just four years later, the singer then seemingly confirmed the rumors surrounding his relationship with actress Daryl Hannah…
Born in November 1945, Young grew up in Toronto, Canada, alongside his brother, Robert. In 1949, though, his parents, Edna and Scott, moved the family to Omemee, a small community in Ontario, Canada. And the next few years proved incredibly difficult for the quartet.
Young’s health was, in fact, a major concern in the early 1950s. During this time, you see, he battled diabetes, epilepsy and polio. And at one point, the youngster’s condition was so bad that he could no longer walk. Despite those issues, though, Young eventually recuperated – and reached a moment that changed his life forever.
It was then, after all, that Young’s mom inspired him to get into music. He even began to play instruments such as the banjo. But after overcoming his health problems, the future singer then faced more hardships. Soon afterward, in fact, his parents’ relationship reached a crossroads.
But as it turned out, Young’s parents had been dealing with some personal issues for quite a while. This in turn put real tension on their marriage. It all therefore came to a head in 1960 when Scott and Edna decided to divorce. And due to the split, the couple’s children faced some major changes in their lives.
In fact, Young and his mother moved away to Winnipeg, Canada, while his brother and father stayed together in Toronto. Yet despite all the upheaval in his life, one thing remained constant for the future star. Thanks in part to the initial encouragement from his mom, he retained his aspirations of becoming a musician.
During his high school years, then, Young played music in a number of groups. Then in 1963 he made a pivotal decision. With some experience behind him, the teenager actually put together his own band, named The Squires. And from there, he left school to pursue his dream, and The Squires hit the local community.
A folk-rock band, The Squires went on to make appearances in venues such as coffeehouses and clubs before Young finally went solo. He then started to meet a number of other musicians on the circuit, and this in turn led to an intriguing partnership. You see, the Toronto native joined The Mynah Birds – a band that featured future superstar Rick James.
And following some time together, The Mynah Birds earned a record deal in 1966 – but the good times didn’t last. In fact, the band split up while working on their debut album, so Young was then on his own once again. That soon changed, however, because the singer decided to move away from the Canadian music scene.
Alongside his pal Bruce Palmer, then, Young drove down from Canada to Los Angeles, kick-starting the next stage of his career. And the pair swiftly formed a band of their own, with Stephen Stills, Dewey Martin and Richie Furay, named Buffalo Springfield. In December 1966, in fact, they released their debut album, which drew plenty of attention.
Then, as Buffalo Springfield’s fanbase continued to grow, Young made another big decision. Apparently sensing some tension in the band, he left in 1968 to focus once again on his solo career. And the following year, he signed a deal with a record label before recording his own debut album.
That first album actually drew a varied response from the public, but Young nevertheless released his second effort mere months later. Titled Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, the record saw the Toronto native working with the band Crazy Horse. And the album ended up earning a respectable place in the charts.
After that, Young found himself hooking up with Stephen Stills for a second time. Stills had, you see, formed a band with Graham Nash and David Crosby. But when Young joined the fray, they subsequently changed the name of the group. The band was thereafter simply known as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
So, following an appearance at Woodstock in the summer of 1969, the band released their debut album a year later. Titled Déjà Vu, the record turned Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young into superstars. Some people at the time even dubbed them the “American Beatles.” Much like before, though, the harmony didn’t last for long.
After another falling out, then, Young left the band to work on his third solo album. Thankfully for the singer, though, that decision bore fruit, as After the Gold Rush reached the top ten in a music chart. However, his biggest success was just around the corner.
In 1971, in fact, Young released Harvest, the follow-up album to After the Gold Rush. That record featured a number of classic songs such as “Old Man” and “The Needle and the Damage Done,” but one track in particular stood out. Yes, “Heart of Gold” surpassed everything on the album and reached the number-one spot in the singles chart.
From there, Young’s career went from strength to strength – but his personal life suffered somewhat. In 1975, in fact, the musician broke up with his then-girlfriend, Carrie Snodgress. The couple’s son, Zeke, had been born three years earlier and has cerebral palsy. This had prompted Snodgress to give up her acting career to look after him.
Following his split from Snodgress, though, Young found love again with waitress Pegi Morton. The pair even tied the knot in 1978. And after that, the singer continued to establish himself as one of the leading lights in his genre. He maintained that drive throughout the next few decades too.
In 2005, however, Young suffered a major health scare. The influential musician was actually struck down by an aneurysm and subsequently needed brain surgery. Thankfully, though, he recovered and went on to create even more albums, the latest of which arrived in 2018.
But it was actually 2014 that signaled another significant change in Young’s personal life. That year, you see, he divorced Morton after 36 years of marriage. And not long after that, it was strongly rumored that the veteran singer was in a relationship with Hollywood actress Daryl Hannah.
As far as her life story goes, Hannah was born in December 1960 and grew up in Chicago alongside her siblings. She then went to a private school before becoming a student at the University of Southern California. And in 1978 the aspiring actress made her big-screen debut in Brian De Palma’s The Fury.
Following that appearance, though, Hannah’s next big-screen role didn’t come for another three years, when she featured in 1981’s Hard Country. Some 12 months later, though, the Chicago native was cast in Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi classic Blade Runner. And after taking on the character of Pris, everything seemingly changed.
In fact, Hannah bagged a number of starring roles throughout the mid- to late-1980s, featuring in films such as Splash, Roxanne, Wall Street and Steel Magnolias. And after that, the actress continued to find steady work throughout the 1990s. Then, in 2003, she appeared in another pop culture classic.
This was Quentin Tarantino’s epic revenge thriller Kill Bill. Taking on the role of Elle Driver, Hannah featured in both volumes of the flick alongside Uma Thurman. And from the looks of her resume, Hannah has hardly stopped working since.
In fact, Hannah’s next standout role came in 2015 when she joined the cast of Netflix TV series Sense8. The actress actually starred in over 20 episodes of the cult drama – until it was untimely canceled in 2018.
As for Hannah’s life outside of acting, she had previously engaged in a number of high-profile romances. These courtships included the likes of Val Kilmer and John F. Kennedy Jr. In 2014, though, rumors started to swirl about a potential relationship with Young, after the pair had attended a protest in Washington, D.C.
And some three months on from that event, Young actually broke up with his wife. So speculation soon suggested that he and Hannah had started dating. But on that note, the veteran musician addressed the media with a strongly worded statement about the romance.
“We didn’t pay any attention to [the media’s speculation],” Young said. “It doesn’t matter. We don’t give a s***. We don’t care, because they don’t know what they’re talking about. And if they do know what they’re talking about, we still don’t care, but we’re happy for them. It doesn’t matter. What matters is us, not the press.”
In 2018, meanwhile, the pair worked together on Hannah’s directorial debut. Young even earned a starring role in the film. Titled Paradox, the movie is a fantasy musical featuring the likes of Willie Nelson, Corey McCormick, Anthony LoGerfo and Lukas Nelson.
Then, after four years together, Young and Hannah appeared to take the next step in their relationship. In August 2018, you see, it was widely reported that the pair had had a secret wedding ceremony that month in California. This claim was further backed up by an intriguing Facebook post.
Indeed, guitarist Mark Miller took to his social media page to wish the pair well. “Congratulations to Daryl Hannah and Neil Young on their wedding today,” he wrote on August 25. “May they have a long and happy relationship.” A short time later, though, the musician confirmed that he hadn’t actually gone to the event.
“I only knew about [the wedding] because one of my friends attended the ceremony in Atascadero and announced it on his page,” Miller said. Meanwhile, celebrity news website Page Six allegedly gathered some information about the event. This material apparently included the instructions guests had had to follow at the end of the night.
According to Page Six, there were around 100 guests at the wedding, including Young’s old bandmate Stephen Stills. It was also reported that each person there received a special locket from the couple. And they also apparently received some advice regarding the local hotels.
“Please note the hotels do not have information about the event,” the guests were informed, as reported by Page Six. “So please only contact them to book a room (and do not mention anything about this event). Everyone will be asked to leave their phones and cameras at the hotel.”
As the speculation continued to grow, Hannah then posted a rather cryptic message on her Instagram page. Alongside a close-up picture of an owl, the 58-year-old wrote, “Someone’s watching over us… love & only love.” And even though nothing had been properly confirmed, several users flocked to her page to offer their congratulations.
“Much love and happiness sent out to Darryl and Neil Young,” one Instagram user wrote in the comments section. “Forever, be ‘in love’ as love never grows old. Love is gold. Two hearts of gold only make one big heart of solid gold. Much love and happiness to the new couple.”
Those feelings were reiterated by another user, who noted the symbolic significance of the owl in Hannah’s picture. “That’s an Omen of profound divinity and a universal nod,” they wrote. “Old souls find each other again and again.” The general public had to wait a couple more months, though, before Young finally made a confirmation of sorts.
In October 2018, following a mass-shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Young made a blog post talking about the situation. The 73-year-old also included a video of a special live performance of the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young song “Ohio.” This is a song which had been written in the aftermath of the Kent State shootings in 1970.
“Today we see what we have become,” Young wrote in his blog post. “With no real laws protecting us from guns, and with politicians supporting the NRA because the NRA supports them, we are not well represented.” From there, the singer put out a heartfelt plea – and all but confirmed his marriage to Hannah in the process.
“Today’s students are brave, demanding change in violent times,” Young continued. “We stand with them. They are us. We are them. This has been going on for far too long. My wife, Daryl, and I put this video together for you to reflect on.” So it seems that after much time spent acting coy with regards to their relationship, the couple are now comfortable publicly acknowledging it.
