The Most-Streamed Music On Spotify In 2023

At the end of each year, our socials are filled with everybody and their mom dropping their "Spotify Wrapped" lists. Maybe you’re in the top 0.005 percent of Taylor Swift fans, or perhaps you’ve streamed 25,000 minutes of Call Her Daddy. Whatever the case, these in-depth stats reveal what your taste in music in 2023 says about you. But while each list is incredibly personal, Spotify has also dropped the top tracks, artists, albums, and podcasts globally. The results tell us everything we need to know about 2023 in pop culture.

THE TOP 10 GLOBAL ARTISTS OF 2023

Spotify's streaming data gives us a glimpse into global pop culture trends that pure sales-driven data never could. By combing through their metrics, Spotify can tell us some pretty cool things, like the fact that Gen Z isn’t as limited to one genre of music as other generations are; they’re much more likely to move between different genres or create their own blends.

Similarly, Spotify tells us that Colombians became "the fifth-largest consumer of Mexican music in 2023," while Afrobeats became "one of the fastest-growing genres on Spotify." Big events such as the Eurovision or the Eras tour can dramatically influence how an artist performs over the year, too. So which perfromers made the biggest impact on a global scale in 2023?

10. Lana Del Rey

In many ways, 2023 was the year of the "girl," with trends like "girl math" and "girl dinner" taking the internet by storm. And it was also the year of Lana Del Rey. In July millions of people created and watched videos that jumped on the TikTok "girl dinner" bandwagon — and people even turned to Spotify to capitalize on the trend. This resulted in 10,000 "girl dinner" playlists on Spotify. Two songs that featured heavily in these playlists were "Cherry" and "Peppers" by Del Rey.

Did this help her become one of the most listened-to artists in 2023? Perhaps. "Cherry" and "Peppers" have more than 334 million listens between them. But Del Rey's 2023 album, Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, and subsequent tour probably have something to do with it, too.

9. Karol G

There's no big secret to the success of Karol G on the Spotify Wrapped chart. The Colombian is a hugely influential star, and her fourth album, Mañana Será Bonito, was a sensation when it was released in 2023. It went straight to number one on the Billboard 200 all-genre chart.

This was the first time this had ever happened for a female artist with a Spanish-language album. That crossover success was bolstered by a tour and an incredible performance at the VMAs. Her most popular song on Spotify is 2023's "PROVENZA," which has more than a billion streams.

8. SZA

SZA is everywhere in the Spotify Wrapped rankings. You'll also see appearances from the American singer-songwriter (real name Solána Imani Rowe) in the most-streamed songs and the most-streamed albums lists. That's probably why she took the time to thank her top fans with a video message.

"Whether you streamed me all day or once, this year changed my life," SZA said in her message. 2023 saw her chart-topping album, SOS, continue to do business and her single "Kill Bill" become a number-one sensation. She topped it all off with a tour, too.

7. Travis Scott

Travis Scott named his latest record Utopia, and the title could describe his 2023. As soon as the rapper released the album, all 19 of its songs entered the Billboard Hot 100. This put his career total of Hot 100 hits at 111.

Scott’s crazy success in 2023 was also thanks to a viral moment following the Giants of Africa Festival in the summer. The event saw a dance from Tyla's hit song "Water" take the world by storm — and Scott later collaborated on a wildly successful remix of the track.

6. Feid

As further proof that Colombian artists and music are taking over the Spotify world, Feid is the sixth-most streamed artist of 2023. He once opened for fellow Spotify Wrapped alum Karol G, but in 2023 he headlined his second U.S. tour.

The 29-date Ferxxo Nitro Jam Underground Tour brought him closer to fans who can't get enough of his signature green shorts and viral songs. "I really want to connect with people when I’m singing and performing," he told Variety in 2023. With almost 50 million monthly Spotify listeners, he is having no trouble with that.

5. Peso Pluma

Música Mexicana was the breakout music genre success of 2023. Chino Pacas and Natanael Cano were big this year, too, but they couldn't quite match the popularity of Peso Pluma. He first popped with a spot on Eslabon Armado’s ubiquitous track, “Ella Baila Sola.”

Peso Pluma's music is called corridos tumbados — a style that combines traditional Mexican music with modern hooks. "I make corridos tumbados because they are a piece of the large puzzle that makes up Mexico, and I want to be the bridge that unites tradition with the present," the artist told Spotify in 2023.

4. Drake

Drake is not only the most-streamed artist of the 2010s, but he also holds the title of the most-streamed artist in Spotify history. He currently has over 81 million monthly listeners, and he dominated the charts again in 2023. Is it a coincidence that every artist in the top ten had a tour in 2023? Not really. A lot of popular artists had to postpone their tours because of the pandemic, and it's taken until 2023 to get things off the ground again. Drake was no different.

His last album came out in 2022, and he took Her Loss on the road with 21 Savage in 2023. This was Drake's first tour in five years. He’d released four albums since the Aubrey & the Three Migos Tour of 2018, so this show was his chance to mark "a celebration of the last decade."

3. The Weeknd

If you ever doubt how big The Weeknd is, just check out his Spotify stats. In February 2023 he became the first artist to earn 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify. That number stood at 102,488,433 monthly listeners when the service dropped its Spotify Wrapped rankings.

The Weeknd also has the most-streamed individual song in Spotify history with "Blinding Light" — which now has more than 3.9 billion streams. It should come as little surprise, then, that The Weeknd's ongoing world tour, After Hours Til Dawn, had grossed an incredible $350 million by July 2023.

2. Bad Bunny

Bad Bunny might be slightly disappointed to reach the number-two spot on this year's Spotify Wrapped. After all, the Puerto Rican star was the most-streamed performer for the past three years. He led the pack with 18.5 billion streams in 2022.

But that's not to say that it's all bad news. “Bad Bunny has had an enormous year and is still very much leading the cultural conversation,” Spotify's Sulinna Ong told The New York Times in 2023. His album nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana was also one of the stand-out successes of the year.

1. Taylor Swift

There was only ever going to be one winner of Spotify Wrapped in 2023. Spotify's Sulinna Ong told The New York Times that Taylor Swift was well ahead of the rest of the field with an incredible 26.1 billion streams. That's over 7.5 million more streams than Bad Bunny's winning total in 2022. The singer earned more than $100 million from Spotify streaming revenue alone.

Meanwhile, Swift's Eras tour is a juggernaut that could gross as much as $2 billion by the end of 2024, and her movie of the tour became the highest-grossing concert movie ever. And we haven't even mentioned her new albums and songs being streamed and sold in the millions.

THE TOP 10 GLOBAL SONGS OF 2023

The most-streamed song of 2023 doesn't have to be a song released in 2023. That means this ranking is particularly affected by global trends and events, making it an excellent spotlight for the year in music. Eurovision, for instance, saw Loreen's "Tatoo" and Käärijä's "Cha Cha Cha" rocket up the charts.

Elsewhere, the release of Barbie saw Aqua's "Barbie World" and Dua Lipa's "Dance The Night" have a big impact on listeners. An artist embarking on a worldwide retrospective tour of their entire back catalogue would also propel a couple of their songs into the top-ten global songs of 2023.

10. “Anti-Hero” by Taylor Swift

There are 519 songs in the Spotify "Billions Club," and in July 2023, Taylor Swift's "Anti-Hero" became one of them. To date, the song has 1.2 billion streams. It was her fourth single to reach the milestone at the time — although she's since added to that total.

Swift's co-writer, Jack Antonoff, told Billboard that the artist had originally thought they "shouldn’t expect ["Anti-Hero"] to ever go to no. 1" because it was "strange and personal." Yet the track reigned supreme on the Billboard chart for eight weeks and is evidently a fan favorite.

9. “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” by Bizarrap, Shakira

Gerard Piqué was likely the only person on the planet not vibing to "Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53" early in 2023. Shakira and Bizarrap's song was a diss track aimed squarely at him, and it was played so much that it broke Guinness World Records.

It instantly smashed the record for the most-streamed Latin song on Spotify in 24 hours, with a phenomenal 14.4 million streams. The track also took the title of the most-streamed Latin song on Spotify in a single week, with 80.6 million streams. We couldn't escape it, so we know Piqué couldn't, either.

8. “Calm Down (with Selena Gomez)” by Rema, Selena Gomez

"Afrobeats is one of the fastest-growing genres on Spotify, growing by 550 percent since 2017 with new audiences emerging in Mexico and India," said Spotify in its Spotify Wrapped press release. "Calm Down" by Rema and Selena Gomez is the most obvious example.

The collaboration brought Rema into the mainstream after years of being a star in Africa. It also brought the pair a Grammy nomination and created the first Afrobeats track to enter the Spotify Billions Club. It currently has 1,140,863,735 streams on the platform.

7. “Creepin’ (with The Weeknd & 21 Savage)” by Metro Boomin, The Weeknd, 21 Savage

"Creepin'" is a reimagining of the 2004 Mario Winans track "I Don't Wanna Know," featuring Diddy and Enya. And while Winans and Diddy were fine with the new track, Enya almost stopped the song from being released. Her problem? She didn't like the original title.

Enya gave the producers a list of acceptable alternate song titles — and Metro Boomin picked "Creepin'" out of the list. “It ended up being a blessing because it’s the best name for it,” he told Billboard. The saga had a happy ending for everybody, as the song has since entered the Spotify Billions Club.

6. “Cruel Summer” by Taylor Swift

"Cruel Summer" was first released in 2019 and became a fan favorite after appearing on Swift's album Lover. But "Cruel Summer" got a new lease of life in 2023, thanks to the artist's mega-successful Eras Tour. The song proved such a hit during the shows that Swift pushed it as a single one more time.

"Cruel Summer" crossed the one-billion-streams threshold in September, making it the fifth Swift track to reach that number. And Swift had anything but a cruel summer as this news came hot on the heels of her becoming the first female artist to have over 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

5. “Ella Baila Sola” by Eslabon Armado, Peso Pluma

Spotify announced that “Ella Baila Sola” by Eslabon Armado and Peso Plum was the global song of the summer of 2023. The Música Mexicana song was streamed 367 million times between May 29 and August 14. It'ss now closing in on a billion streams in total.

"'Ella Baila Sola' as the global song of the summer is a true testament to how Música Mexicana is dominating the international music scene, becoming one of the top growth-driving genres globally," Spotify's Antonio Vazquez told Variety, adding, "The strong appeal of this song reflects the power of Música Mexicana, proving that its moment in the sun is more than a trend."

4. “Seven (feat. Latto)” by Jung Kook

Jung Kook couldn't have asked for a better start to his solo career outside of BTS. His (very) explicit song "Seven" featuring Latto broke the record for the most streams for a male artist in a week on Spotify, with 89,748,171 streams.

"Seven" became the fastest-ever song to reach one million streams when it powered past that figure in just eight days of release. The song continued to dominate the Spotify streaming chart when it also reached one billion streams in the fastest-ever time: 108 days.

3. “As It Was” by Harry Styles

The most impressive thing about the position of "As It Was" on this year's Spotify Wrapped is that Harry Style's pop classic was the most-streamed song of Spotify Wrapped 2022. It had 1.5 billion streams in 2022, and somehow, fans show no signs of getting tired of the song.

"As It Was" became a member of the Billions Club in July 2022, just three months after its initial release. The track is now getting close to joining the ultra-exclusive three-billion-streams club, with more than 2.8 billion streams to its name. Only six other songs have made it that far: "One Dance" by Drake, "Dance Monkey" by Tones and I, "Sunflower" by Post Malone and Swae Lee, "Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi, "Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran, and "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd.

2. “Kill Bill” by SZA

SZA wrote "Kill Bill" in about an hour... and didn't much like it. "I hated it," she told Variety. "Well, I didn't hate it. But I was like, 'Can I say this? Is it silly?'" But co-producer Rob Bisel convinced her it was fine.

"I was really scared that people would harm each other, 'cause some people are f'ing strange," the singer said. "But it was a joke." SZA needn't have worried, though. The song was such a hit with fans that it was the second-most streamed hit of 2023. To date, it has been streamed over 1.4 billion times.

1. “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus' "Flowers" is officially the song of 2023 — and it was a hit for literally the whole year. Released on January 12, the oh-so-relatable breakup song immediately got inside people's hearts and minds. It broke the Spotify record for the fastest time a song reached one billion streams.

"Flowers" continued to be successful throughout the summer, reaching the number seven spot on Spotify's "Songs of the Summer" ranking. By year's end, "Flowers" has been streamed an incredible 1.6 billion times. Hopefully, Cyrus treated herself to some flowers.

THE TOP 10 GLOBAL ALBUMS OF 2023

Streaming has dramatically changed the way people listen to albums. Fans these days are far more likely to fire up a playlist than listen to an album from start to finish. So how does Spotify know which album is the most listened to in 2023?

Spotify counts a song stream as when someone listened to at least 30 seconds of a song. An album stream count is all the song streams from one release added together over the year. It's interesting to note that in 2023, many of the most-streamed albums were released before the start of the year — including the winner.

10. Harry’s House by Harry Styles

YouTube music commenter Sergio Scardigno has a theory about Harry Styles' Harry's House. "It's so calculatingly catchy that it's just going to sneak its way up on Wrapped — whether you like it or not," he told The Washington Post in November 2023.

"Some albums and songs just have more replay value than others," he added. Replayability is key to appearing in this ranking, and Styles has got it in spades. Harry's House placed second in 2022's Spotify Wrapped, and people still listened to it in droves in 2023.

9. GÉNESIS by Peso Pluma

What a year for Peso Pluma. He was nowhere to be seen on Spotify Wrapped 2022 — but he's all over the 2023 rankings. Not only was he the fifth-most-streamed artist and had the fifth-most-streamed song, but his album also made it into the top ten list. GÉNESIS took the top spot on the Billboard Latin charts and made it to number three on the Billboard 200, which made it the most successful regional Mexican music record in Billboard history.

Peso Pluma also made a historic appearance on late-night TV. His barnstorming performance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon marked the first time a Música Mexicana song had ever been played on late night. Pluma's only 24 years old, too, so the only way is up.

8. HEROES & VILLAINS by Metro Boomin

Metro Boomin had a little help from his friends to get HEROES & VILLAINS to the top of the Billboard charts. Featured artists include 21 Savage, A$AP Rocky, John Legend, Travis Scott — and none other than Morgan Freeman.

The December 2022 release of HEROES & VILLAINS started 2023 with a bang for Metro. Other highlights of his year included an outstanding set at Coachella and creating the soundtrack for the movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. His hit song "Creepin'" was also featured on Spotify Wrapped.

7. Lover by Taylor Swift

As more proof of the power of Taylor Swift, Lover was originally released in 2019, and yet is the seventh-most streamed album on Spotify in 2023. We've seen how Swift's Eras tour catapulted the song "Cruel Summer" up the rankings, and it seems it's done the same thing for Lover.

When this album first dropped, the COVID pandemic ended any possible tour to support it. Swift has released multiple albums since then — including another that will soon feature on this list — leading USA Today to claim in 2021 that Lover was her "forgotten masterpiece." Well, it's certainly no longer forgotten...

6. One Thing At A Time by Morgan Wallen

Morgan Wallen does not appear on Spotify Wrapped's most-streamed artists globally — nor does he have a track in the most-streamed songs globally. But if you look at the U.S.-specific rankings, you'll find Wallen is all over it.

The country star is the third most-streamed artist in the U.S., and his songs "Last Night" and "You Proof" are the first and eighth most-streamed songs in the U.S., respectively. Wallen also has two records in the U.S. most-streamed albums ranking: Dangerous: The Double Album is the fifth most-streamed, and One Thing At A Time is top of the tree.

5. MAÑANA SERÁ BONITO by KAROL G

"This definitely represents a specific phase of my life," Karol G told Rolling Stone in February 2023. "The name of the album is a phrase I kept repeating to myself when nothing felt great... Personally, I was really disconnected from myself and from my friends."

"I wasn’t unhappy, but I wasn’t happy either," she continued. "So every day I’d say to myself, 'It's okay, mañana será bonito — tomorrow will be beautiful.'" The phrase was seemingly prophetic because the resulting album's debut was the most-streamed Spanish-language release from a female artist in Spotify history.

4. Starboy by The Weeknd

How does The Weeknd feel about Starboy being the fourth-most streamed album globally six years after its original release? After all, his 2020 and 2022 albums, After Hours and Dawn FM, respectively, are nowhere to be seen on this ranking.

But then the artist did drop a deluxe version of Starboy in 2023, and his world-spanning tour has no doubt forced people to revisit his past hits. TikTok has also played its part in elevating a couple of songs from his back catalogue, with "Die for You" getting a boost from the social media platform.

3. SOS by SZA

When SOS dropped in December 2022, the album enjoyed the biggest-ever streaming week for an R&B album in the U.S. It spent a couple of months at number one on the Billboard chart, too — and kept delivering the goods in 2023.

It probably didn't hurt that "Kill Bill" was also one of the biggest songs of the year. 2023 was such a success for SZA that Billboard named her its Woman of the Year.

2. Midnights by Taylor Swift

The only thing surprising about seeing another Taylor Swift album on this ranking is that it’s not at number one. When Swift released Midnights in October 2022, it broke the Spotify record for the most-streamed album in 24 hours.

In 2023 Midnights was only the third most-streamed album in the U.S. behind Morgan Wallen’s and SZA’s records. It was the biggest streaming hit in the U.K., though, and the worldwide reach of her fanbase pushed Swift's release (almost) to the top.

1. Un Verano Sin Ti by Bad Bunny

Having missed out on being the most-streamed artist of 2023, Bad Bunny will have to console himself with having the biggest album of the year. Un Verano Sin Ti was the biggest album of 2022, too, and it earned over 4.5 billion streams in 2023.

Un Verano Sin Ti also had the honor of being named the most-streamed release ever in Spotify history. It replaced Ed Sheeran's ÷ to head up the list — all the more impressive considering that Sheeran's album was released five years before Un Verano Sin Ti.

THE TOP 10 GLOBAL PODCASTS OF 2023

"Podcasts are the perfect format for audiences and fans to engage in cultural moments," Spotify's Lizzy Hale said in a press release. This is because, she said, "when there is a viral moment in culture, fans come to podcasts to feel connected to that bigger moment." For example, Spotify tells us that when Beyoncé announced her Renaissance tour in February 2023, they saw a jump of 1,025% in relevant podcast streams. Eurovision had a similar effect in May.

The only major theme that brought people to podcasts was a desire to learn more about the topics of the day. "A podcast feels like you are talking to your best friend about the story you are obsessing about," said Hale. "They also become artifacts of what our culture’s reactions and opinions were in the moment."

10. TED Talks Daily

Ted Talks Daily drops a new episode every Wednesday with host Elise Hu inviting guests to delve into the latest hot-button issues. These kinds of expert knowledge bombs are just what people turn to when they want to know more about a given subject.

One of the dominant issues of 2023 was the rise and threat of artificial intelligence. Ted Talks Daily has covered this several times — as well as every other kind of subject. Its limited run times — episodes run between ten and 35 minutes — make it the perfect place to dive in and learn more.

9. The Diary Of A CEO with Steven Bartlett

Steven Bartlett promises listeners "an unfiltered journey" into the backstories of some of the most prominent experts and businesspeople in the world. But he insists that his show is different from other celebrity interview podcasts "because of how raw, honest, and emotional it is."

Spotify didn't release how many listeners each podcast has, but it's clear that Bartlett is doing all right for himself. The podcast was spun off into a book in August 2023, and Bartlett is on the panel of Dragons' Den — the British version of Shark Tank.

8. Serial Killers

When Apple released its top podcasts of the year, Crime JunkieDateline NBC, and Morbid all charted in high positions. But that could be because female listeners power the popular true crime genre, and Apple's listenership is predominantly female.

Meanwhile, Spotify's listenership, according to a study from Cumulus and Signal Hill, has a more balanced gender divide. So while Serial Killers is still incredibly popular on the platform, it could perhaps have charted higher had it been able to reach more of its target audience.

7. This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von

The Cumulus and Signal Hill study also noted that Spotify has a younger podcast audience than Apple. The median age of its listeners is 37, four years younger than Apple's stately 41. So, arguably, This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von is better served on Spotify.

The show sees the stand-up comedian chatting with guests about current affairs — but not in the way you might find on an NPR show. It's a more youthful approach, designed to appeal to a younger audience. And it's working: Spotify named This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von as the top rising podcast of 2023.

6. Crime Junkie

Crime Junkie is a show for people who "can never get enough true crime." The podcast has been around since 2017, and its popularity shows no signs of stopping. It was Apple's biggest podcast of 2022 and 2023.

Its website claims that the podcast has covered at least 630 true-crime stories and has been downloaded over 500 million times. The team also says they've donated $643,000 to charities to support victims and their families.

5. On Purpose with Jay Shetty

"I owe everything to the lessons learned as a monk," Jay Shetty claims on his website. He first transformed those lessons into a morning show for HuffPost and was named as one of Forbes' "30 under 30" in 2017.

These days, Shetty hosts the "no. 1 health podcast" and wants to "make wisdom go viral." That mission is well and truly on its way as On Purpose with Jay Shetty is one of the most-listened-to podcasts of the year, with new episodes dropping twice a week.

4. anything goes with emma chamberlain

In January 2023 the cultural conversation was all about "nepo babies." Spotify's editorial team highlighted anything goes with emma chamberlain's episode on the subject as one of the best of the year. "Emma's episode breaks down, in the most simple terms, what nepotism truly means so that her listeners can make their own opinions," Spotify said.

Spotify made the podcast exclusive to its platform in 2023. "I couldn't be more honored to be their exclusive partner, and work together to allow anything goes to blossom in ways it couldn’t have anywhere else," Chamberlain said at the time.

3. Huberman Lab

Huberman Lab is the only other podcast — outside of Crime Junkie — to appear on both Spotify's and Apple's year-end lists. This is some achievement considering the podcast is a hard science show coming out in the era of "alternative facts."

But Dr. Andrew Huberman, the host, told Time that his popularity is down to people's appetite for learning. "I certainly believe people are most curious about themselves and the people close to them and why the world works the way it does," he said in June 2023.

2. Call Her Daddy

Spotify brought Alex Cooper and Call Her Daddy exclusively to its platform for a reported $60 million. Cooper then shifted gears to become a podcast focused on mental health and "uncomfortable moments" with her guests. The results are here for all to see.

"My show is one of the biggest shows in the world," she told The New York Times in 2022. "In my category, there is nothing above it." Cooper did confess, though, that her goal was to knock The Joe Rogan Experience off the number-one spot...

1. The Joe Rogan Experience

The Joe Rogan Experience remains the top podcast on Spotify. This is the fourth consecutive year he's reached this peak, but there is a potential cloud on the horizon. Spotify's exclusive deal with Rogan expires in 2024.

Will Rogan stay with Spotify next year? Will Spotify be willing to part with the reported $200 million they paid for him in 2021? Rogan has his share of critics — who've labeled him an "idiot," a "danger to society," and an "enormous threat to public health." But there's no doubt that it's going to take a lot to topple this podcast king.
