20. She faced unfair discrimination when applying for university

Discrimination is rife, and poor Jen Arnold found this out firsthand when applying for university. She was apparently “grilled” over her height at her University of Miami interview, the interviewer having issues with the TV star’s dwarfism. Thankfully, she got in at Johns Hopkins Medical School, and hasn’t looked back since.

19. Her husband gets addressed incorrectly

Arnold’s husband Bill Klein sometimes gets addressed by his wife’s surname. Speaking to Huffington Post in 2011, he said, “I was at Restoration Hardware and the lady came up and said, ‘Oh my God, I was hoping I’d meet you guys, it’s very nice to meet you Bill Arnold.” Luckily, the good-natured father of two has a sense of humor, and actually doesn’t mind being called by his spouse’s surname.

18. She secretly snoops on her man

Contrary to popular belief, reality TV has its perks. For instance, Arnold can watch her show and spy on her husband! Indeed, she’s credited its existence for allowing her to snoop on Klein, ensuring he’s on his best behavior when she’s not around. In 2011 she told Huffington Post, “There’s always someone watching and I have eyes making sure he’s being good.”

As Arnold’s kids both suffer from the same medical condition as their parents, the two children will inevitably run into bullies. Arnold has said that she’ll explain to them about the mean side of kids when they’re older, but she also hopes they can draw strength from her and Klein’s past experiences.

Arnold faced problems when she adopted her daughter, Zoey, from an orphanage. The Indian-born child gave her mom some difficulties, with Arnold claiming she struggled to bond with the girl at first. She told People in 2015, “She blamed us for the change.” However, with time and familiarity, Arnold says it’s become much easier.

Arnold and Klein’s relationship appears to be a match made in heaven. However, the pair do have some key rules. Firstly, they never go to sleep on an argument. Secondly, they divide the housework out depending on who is the most exhausted. And lastly, they hold communication as a paramount component in their marriage.

14. Her husband contemplated suicide

While Arnold faced ridicule during her early life, it was Klein who was left close to suicide because of bullying. In the couple’s 2015 book, Life Is Short (No Pun Intended), he wrote, “I would always arrive home alone and often fairly intoxicated. I stood up and leaned against the wall next to the window. I looked down to the place where I might die.” Thankfully, everything took a turn for the better when he met his wife-to-be.

13. She credits the show for improving the family’s communication

Both Arnold and Klein have showered love upon the show for helping them stay connected. Klein told Huffington Post, “On occasion, we have to expand upon a topic that we otherwise would have skimmed across because of time, because our days and our jobs are busy… it gives us a chance to communicate in more detail.”

12. She’s had several health issues

Jen Arnold has had many medical problems, the most serious being in 2011 when she was diagnosed with cancer. The advanced choriocarcinoma was brought on by a miscarriage, and as a result, her uterus swelled to four times its normal size, with three tumors also showing up in her lungs. On top of that, she also had to have a hysterectomy. Luckily, she beat her hard fought battle with the illness and is now cancer-free.

11. She has a turbulent first memory

It’s not great if your first ever memory is of being in the back of an ambulance, but that’s exactly what Arnold’s was. She revealed just that in Life Is Short (No Pun Intended), saying, “My first memory ever is of riding in the back of the ambulance that came for me. The lights were flashing and my parents were tucking towels around my head, trying to make sure I was secured for the trip to the hospital.”

10. She’s been operated on more times than she cares to remember…

Due to her various ailments, Arnold’s been through a multitude of operations in her lifetime. She’s had so many, in fact, that they total over 30 to date. However, she has always remained positive, no matter what obstacles have been thrown her way. From her younger years to her present years, Arnold’s already gone through much more than most.

9. … however, one time was worth remembering

During one of her many hospital visits, Arnold found someone famous operating on her. In her second book, Think Big: Overcoming Obstacles With Optimism, she stated that ex-presidential hopeful Ben Carson was her surgeon when she was aged just two. While no medical procedure is a time of fond memories, we’re sure she has a smile on her face recalling this one.

8. Her workplace was hesitant to be featured on the show

Arnold had just started working at Texas Children’s Hospital when The Little Couple got the green light, which meant asking her new employers whether they could be included. Understandably, the hospital was hesitant at first. In 2013 Arnold told Glamour, “As a hospital, they have a lot to lose, and they wanted to make sure it would show the hospital in a good light.”

7. Her husband was a troublesome teen

Arnold’s other half was quite the rebellious teenager at school. However, Klein says his poor grades and lackadaisical attitude forced him to make a change. With the help of his parents (and three months without his favorite things) he knuckled down to study. Since overcoming his difficult childhood, Klein is now a responsible parent to two cute kids.

6. The pair were destined to be together

Even in bad situations, good things can occur. In fact, Arnold and Klein first met when they were both being treated in the same hospital at a young age. The two were in to get surgery for their skeletal dysplasia conditions. Little did they know, years later they would be married with two children.

5. Celebrating once isn’t enough

Even hardcore fans might not be aware that the pair like to celebrate special occasions twice; once for the cameras, and another time when they aren’t around. Arnold told Huffington Post, “We try to remind each other that dinners out with the cameras don’t really count and that we still need to have a separate celebratory dinner for us, for birthdays and anniversaries.” Sounds like double the fun to us!

4. The pair are currently on hiatus…

Why has The Little Couple been off our screens for so long? Well, it’s because of a legal battle between the show’s producers, LMNO, and its parent network, Discovery. LMNO are attempting to sue Discovery for copyright infringement and breach of contract, to the tune the of $7 million. Arnold and Klein have been stuck in the middle, as their show is right at the heart of the dispute.

The couple aren’t sitting on the sidelines for the lawsuit, though, as they’ve both been affected by the legal proceedings. They filed papers this year which would bring them closer to rescinding their intellectual-property rights, as well as getting their fair share of compensation for their time on the show.

2. She almost died at birth

Arnold went through a painful birth, one which almost took her life. She describes the painful event in her first book as being, “nothing short of harrowing.” And, when she finally did emerge, she almost died from breathing problems, with her mother almost died herself from hemorrhaging.
